To say mash is overrated?

I'm just not keen on mashed potatoes! DH doesn't like flavour and just likes it mashed into oblivion with a dollop of his fake butter spread, or cheese (depending on the meal, we generally just have cheesy mash with sausages and beans).

The best mash I've ever had was the garlic one at Toby Carvery, it was SO good but sadly I've still not managed to recreate it at home. Recently I've started cooking new potatoes just for myself when everyone else is having mash. They're so much nicer and I can actually chew them, unlike mash...

However, whenever I see a post about roast dinners on Facebook, a LOT of people say that mash is the best part of a roast dinner. How?!

AIBU to say mash is overrated?

Mash is nice.
The people who disagree are probably all serial killers. Or not using butter

DappledThings · 21/10/2021 07:03

Mash is great in the right context. With sausages or in top of a fish or cottage pie. It has no place in a roast dinner.

RampantIvy · 21/10/2021 07:06

@Pedalpushers

Mash in a roast dinner? Madness. Roast potatoes surely?

Mash is nice as comfort food, with sausages and gravy.

IMO roast potatoes are over rated. I prefer mash (ducks and hides)
MushMonster · 21/10/2021 07:13

One vote for delicious mash!

I cannot believe there are so many people who do not like it.

Coulddowithanap · 21/10/2021 07:19

I love mash with real butter, splash of milk and seasoning. Not sure it has a place in a roast dinner though (but would give it a go!)

OtterAndDog · 21/10/2021 07:25

Mash is the best food on earth, yabu

WhatIsThisPlease · 21/10/2021 07:27

YANBU. Mash makes me gag.

You are being a bit unreasonable for putting it on a roast dinner though Grin

Snowballs1 · 21/10/2021 07:28

I don't like it either, it's the texture rather than taste, for me it's not even worth the effort of peeling the potatoes. I often eat jacket potatoes, no peeling to do, & eat the skin, which is healthier than discarding it!
It spoils fish pie as well, bland topping & soggy underneath, yuck, & makes shepherds pie & cottage pie bland, so not keen on them either.

lollipoprainbow · 21/10/2021 07:30

It's my favourite potato based dish I adore it !! Just hate the faff of making it. And yes I would definitely have it on a roast Blush

Notimetolive · 21/10/2021 07:31

Never really liked mash. Until recently when I mixed a teaspoon of mustard through it. Yum.

Footprintsonthemoon1 · 21/10/2021 07:33

Roast potatoes are amazing but i usually make mash for ease and the kids love it. New potatoes are the worst, can only have them absolutely swimming in butter but then it feels like too many calories

RampantIvy · 21/10/2021 07:34

Good mash isn't bland. I often add a clove of garlic in with the potatoes when cooking them, then mash it in with the potatoes. Made with plenty of seasoning, butter and milk it is brilliant comfort food.

Briony123 · 21/10/2021 07:36

Mash needs loads of butter, some cream, seedy Dijon and grated extra mature cheddar with a bit of salt & pepper. Spring onions are optional.
The potatoes are actually a relatively minor ingredient Grin

@RRts

Oh it's you...never mind.

@RRts what's that supposed to mean? Confused

Sorry I didn't write that very well, I meant the texture is bland, as I get older I seem to prefer food drier & crunchier. I Often eat cream crackers with a lump of hard cheese & no butter, 7 don't like any gravy on meat any more either
HappyDays40 · 21/10/2021 07:55

@RRts why make a weird comment that is naff all to do with the post. Odd.

MyOtherProfile · 21/10/2021 07:56

Mash wasn't worth the effort in my opinion, until I found Tesco own brand frozen mash. Lush.

PooWillyNameChange · 21/10/2021 08:10

Mash is boring but so are new potatoes. Even nice, homegrown fresh ones. So bland.

Potatoes should be roasted, sauteed or - best of all - fried.

MamsellMarie · 21/10/2021 08:11

Mash was a filler upper when people did physical work for a living and had less money for food.

I think that is why it's hard to diet nowadays as every meal is tasty/jspicy/ crunchy where as 50 years ago it was just what you ate for energy through the day. So you'd get some meat and veg and a mound of mash. The other option was bread and butter with a meal, this would be white bread not an artisan loaf with seeds, spice etc.

It also means people have higher expectations. So more work for the chef.

girlmom21 · 21/10/2021 08:25

Mashed potato on a Sunday dinner with gravy and mint sauce is god tier.

Anyone who doesn't like mash deserves to be banned Grin

lazylinguist · 21/10/2021 08:36

YABU. Mash is great, but not with fake butter Envy . And not with roast dinner! I don't know anyone who does mash with a roast (and having both mash and roast potatoes is weird and unnecessary imo).

Proper mash needs obscene amounts of real butter, plus plenty of salt and pepper and ideally a bit of nutmeg.

SilenceOfThePrams · 21/10/2021 08:55

Proper decent sausages. Onion gravy. And proper mash, slightly lumpy still, with butter, milk, salt, pepper and nutmeg.

Or just a giant bowl of cheesy garlicky super smooth whipped mashed potatoes, aligot style.

But mash has no place in a roast dinner.

True, but the way I have always seen it is that rice and pasta are so bland, they actually require tasty sauces whereas potatoes and bread are more pleasant on their own, or at least with butter, and don’t.

SamMil · 21/10/2021 09:06

I've never heard of mash with a roast dinner!

I do like bangers & mash though (with peas and plenty of gravy!)

I'm pretty sure people ate for enjoyment, not just energy, even a hell of a lot longer ago than 50 years! Ask the Romans. It's harder to diet because we are surrounded by cheap, processed, sugary, fatty foods which are easy to access 24 hours a day, and it's seen as normal to eat between meals.
