To say mash is overrated?

I'm just not keen on mashed potatoes! DH doesn't like flavour and just likes it mashed into oblivion with a dollop of his fake butter spread, or cheese (depending on the meal, we generally just have cheesy mash with sausages and beans).

The best mash I've ever had was the garlic one at Toby Carvery, it was SO good but sadly I've still not managed to recreate it at home. Recently I've started cooking new potatoes just for myself when everyone else is having mash. They're so much nicer and I can actually chew them, unlike mash...

However, whenever I see a post about roast dinners on Facebook, a LOT of people say that mash is the best part of a roast dinner. How?!

AIBU to say mash is overrated?

I was being a bit tongue in cheek @Legitimatesalvage…

I also do both, and rely on my mandolin for my dauphinoise slices. However I usually can’t be arsed - even if it is quickish in reality, it seems to take forever.

Michelin star mash.
Equal quantities of potato and butter.

I like mashed potato but it has no place on a roast dinner. Heathens.

Itsnotover · 21/10/2021 00:22

My mums mash is amazing.

I'll never forget the Boxing Day that my ex decided to make Smash. What fresh hell was that?? I can honestly say I'd never eaten it before and never will again !

Monkeytennis97 · 21/10/2021 00:28

Love mash.

Weirdly DH had lots of mash growing up- doesn't really like it.

I had lots of pasta and rice growing up. Not big fan of either but crave lovely mash made with butter and whole milk- yum!

RRts · 21/10/2021 00:28

Oh it's you...never mind.

Monkeytennis97 · 21/10/2021 00:29

Roast potatoes with roast dinner though not mash.

puddlebubble · 21/10/2021 01:02

Mash dislike can be a texture issue too though. So use rooster potatoes, boil them up, add real butter (christ fake butter is not going to help) salt pepper and forgo the milk. Crush them rather than mash to a creamy pulp that a baby could eat. Leave them a little rough, you may like it better that way. In restaurants, sometimes for some unknown reason, creme fraiche or sour cream is added and it actually makes spuds taste like an old sock.

PigletJohn · 21/10/2021 01:11

I'm very fond of mash. Usually make it with red potatoes and a little warmed milk and white pepper. And mash it three times as long as most people consider necessary.

Can't get on with a ricer.

Depending on the potato, it may benefit from being steamed longer to dry out, and butter instead of milk (usually try to minimise fats).

Snugglybuggly · 21/10/2021 01:14

YANBU I hate mash!

Yellownotblue · 21/10/2021 01:42

I feel sad for all the mash haters.

Really good mash is a lot of work (not to mention calories), so I only do it a few times a year (mostly Christmas). Riced potatoes, loads of butter and salt, pepper, milk, spring onions, lardons and masses of Parmesan (or emmental in dire straits). It is divine.

The rest of the year I buy ready made mash for cottage pies.

DinosaurDuvet · 21/10/2021 01:48

Kerry pinks are so lovely, floury & dry they melt in your mouth, only a pinch of salt needed. None of the milk / butter / cream craic

Oh4Tunas · 21/10/2021 02:30

It needs either good gravy or plenty of flavourful food (meat, especially) to go with each mouthful.

WeasilyPleased · 21/10/2021 02:32

You're not making it properly if you hate it or it's claggy! Mustard mash is a firm favourite in this house.

FiveGs · 21/10/2021 03:07

I can only have a little bit as it massively bloats me for some reason.

Shame as I love it

HappyDays40 · 21/10/2021 03:50

Im goung to have to disagree OP. I feel all triggered now. How can you say these things😉

ThirdElephant · 21/10/2021 04:01

I love mashed potato. It's the best way to eat potato.

Unfortunately, my DC and DH do not agree and I don't much see the point of making a separate thing for just me, so I rarely have it.

SirenSays · 21/10/2021 04:04

I have a very scientific test for mash. During the seasoning process, if you taste it and mindlessly keep eating, it's done. If you can put the fork down, it's bad mash and needs more love.

torquewench · 21/10/2021 04:07

I only ever have frozen mash. Sorry not sorry. Don't have the time or inclination to peel, boil, mash when the ready made stuff tastes nicer, and I prefer the texture. Anyone suggesting otherwise is wrong 😉

Cocogreen · 21/10/2021 04:44

I didn't like it until I started making it with cream instead of milk, and more butter.

MerryMarigold · 21/10/2021 04:57

I don't think I've ever had mash with roast. But mash with sausages and gravy is the best. Or beef stew. Any stew. I make it as above with kids if butter, salt and pepper and full fat milk. I also hate fake mash, it's like playdough.

I can't stand boiled potatoes unless they are new pots as they are so tasteless and would rather have mash or jackets or roast.

Rubyupbeat · 21/10/2021 06:19

Mash is divine, my last meal on the green mile, and has to be obliterated with my most favourite and trusty kitchen gadget, a masha, smoothest lump free mash ever!

To say mash is overrated?
ThisIsTheEndMyFriend · 21/10/2021 06:39

It’s not normal to eat mash when new potatoes are in season.
I suppose I regard mash as a regrettable necessity once plain boiled potatoes become dry and unappetising.
Apart from butter, milk and seasoning the trick is to really beat hell out of them. They go well with stew, but not a roast.

TroysMammy · 21/10/2021 06:40

When my DP makes mashed potatoes it's like eating clouds.

GiltEdges · 21/10/2021 06:54

Mash (and mushy food in general) is the work of the devil. Full stop. 🤢
