Amazon nightmare

I ordered a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet and keyboard from Amazon costing just under £1k.

It supposedly arrived today. Any guesses as to what was actually in the box?

I have made a report to Amazon assuming they would put the issue right and they say that because the package was delivered to my address they consider the item to have been delivered and will not refund or replace the item.

AIBU to this this is totally unacceptable?

We order a long coffee table from John Lewis, when it came in the box was a chair, the driver had put the box in my lounge, my husband said why didn't I notice the size of the box wouldn't have a table in it, it got sorted, but can't help laughing at myself for not saying anything to the delivery man.

A couple of years ago, we ordered a new mobile phone from amazon, but when I opened the box, it was actually some basic bluetooth headphones. I don't think they would have weighed the same but maybe they did. Amazon were actually really helpful initially and sent another phone and I returned the headphones. There was a small issue when they processed the refund and tried to charge me for another phone but that got sorted out too. Maybe they have changed their policies since then.

A box of weetabix? I have read about this, shocking!!

MC68 · 10/10/2021 18:36

I would photograph the bottom of the box where the double tape is etc as evidence for starters.

earthyfire · 10/10/2021 18:48

I won't buy from third party sellers anymore, sometimes I haven't realised so I ensure I check before I pay now. Had some very dodgy items and some which haven't worked. Just not worth the hassle.

ChaoBella · 10/10/2021 18:50

This is really crap but think of this from Amazons position. If they set precedents of refunding people who have had their high value itam placed with brick/cereal or whatever then a lot of people will start claiming this.

I am not saying Amazon are right or wrong but they cannot start refunding these cases. There has to be a line where they say sorry but the item was the correct weight at both ends and signed for.

For that reason I never buy high items via a delivery service, I always go into the shop.

bluetoothroboticgrapefruit · 10/10/2021 18:51

I wonder if it’s got worse since they launched their own couriers. I do miss the DPD days.

Whydidimarryhim · 10/10/2021 18:57

I think Amazon where done with lots of PS5s boxes emptied of ps5 and various tat put in.
Yes hopefully you are home and you can get delivery driver to be there when you open it.

Who would have thought anyone would ever say that!

A few years ago I ordered a Fitbit from Amazon for my DH for Christmas. It arrived and without opening the box I wrapped it up and put it under the tree. When he opened it, the box was empty. I found a telephone number, with great difficulty, on their website and phoned up to complain. Amazon couldn’t have been more helpful. They could see on their computer that I had been a customer for ten years and had never made such a complaint before. A replacement Fitbit arrived in a few days. I was most impressed by their service.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 10/10/2021 19:25

Video yourself opening the replacement box so they can't claim that you are a scammer.

HareHare · 10/10/2021 19:26

I had an item delivered and left in the recycling box from ASOS it was not there when I arrived home and the recycling had been collected. Asos would not refund but my bank did. They said someone in the house had previously said this was a safe place for parcels but this was not me.

You do not understand consumer law. The supplier is responsible for ensuring that the ordered goods reach the consumer.
bluetoothroboticgrapefruit · 10/10/2021 19:33

@393847593478resu Do you have a bad driver? I’ve never had a problem with DPD.

Tbh I liked citylink back then too. I’d got my ordering times down to a fine art to avoid… I think it was Royal Mail? I wish I could do the reverse now.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 10/10/2021 19:34

OP I wonder whether you should tell your story to this chap: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/amazons-great-customer-service-has-the-banks-scared-37fhzhd3p

Lougle · 10/10/2021 19:35

This is awful. I hope it all gets sorted soon.

Just to give another experience, I have ordered several tablets, 2 ChromeBooks, and 2 mobile phones from Amazon and all got there just fine.

I have had issue with a third party seller on Amazon before too. The item arrived damaged, I took photos etc, returned item at my expense as demanded, but the actual seller was a pain in the arse Hmm and refused to accept responsibility. I complained to Amazon whom refunded me straight away but like you, I'm now wary of these sellers.
Whatamesssss · 10/10/2021 19:59

Make you you open it in front of the delivery person. Have scissors handy.

EffOrf · 10/10/2021 20:10

Was there a battery hazard sticker on the box, as there should be if there was ever a tablet or laptop in there, it might be a clue as to whether it was sheets or tablet when it was packed.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 10/10/2021 20:16

Jesus we have the same thing right now. Dh just opened a parcel that came a few hours ago. I signed for it but it's for his car, car speakers, and I don't have time to open it. Inside was a baby spoon and a coffee insulated mug, about a 10th of the price of our speakers. Dh on phone now to Amazon. Amazon have said they are processing a replacement but we need to return the items we received. Well yes, I don't need a fucking baby spoon Hmm

shewhomustbeEbayed · 10/10/2021 20:16

Someone I know ordered a mobile phone and got - a box of Oreos. Same shape and of course she signed for the package before checking. As she had paid on her credit card she was insured and got her money back. Apparently a common scam.

EffOrf · 10/10/2021 20:23

Bloody hell, I'm glad I only ordered a tea caddy, which I received this evening

Same, we had an iPad Pro delivered recently and all was fine. We weren’t even given a code like people have mentioned, it was just handed over.

Late to the thread so not had chance to read all comments. Just wanted to add my experience with a wrong amazon order receieved.
On one occasion I ordered eyeliner, a big box turned up (not unusual for amazon) it contained....50 golf balls. I assumed they somehow messed up labels, I really wanted to see the golfers face when he opened my eyeliner.
The chat with the online assistance to report it was amazing Grin in the end i sold the golf balls to a work mate and bought another eyeliner because amazon wanted me to get it delivered back to them at my own time and expense
Hope you get this sorted
