To not be bothered if DS vapes

Dsvape · 05/10/2021 18:10

DS is 16 (17 in November) and I have found out that he has a vape. I found out because he was seen doing it by a friend of mine. Apparently he goes off the school grounds (6th former allowed out for lunch) every day to do it. He does it with a couple of friends. I honestly can’t get too upset about it he’s almost 17 and it’s not like vaping is horrific for your health like smoking is he’s not doing it on school grounds I am honestly not that bothered by it. I am glad by friend told me but I don’t feel the need to raise it with DS. Or am I being a completely negligent mother if I do that is this something that should upset me? Any advice?

I can't get over teens taking up vaping when never having smoked 😲. More weird that before vaping, I believe less teens were taking up smoking. I think the message has been lost somewhere.

Is vaping addictive? I assume so?

TBH I think tobacco companies need to keep generating profits for shareholders, so it's not surprising that children are new vape users - they would surely be a key demo as the addiction would provide a long revenue stream.

It's all very sophisticated now, triggering those addictions early (loot boxes for gambling, social media, HFSS foods etc). Kids don't stand a chance really. I don't blame you for not caring OP.

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/10/2021 22:31

The long term side effects arent known but let's face it it's not going to be good for you is it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 06/10/2021 22:44

Majority of kids who take up vaping without smokin are using CBD (where I work and DS's school).

It can be addictive - the actual hand to mouth habit. However, vape juice can come nicotine free, so not addictive in that sense.
Chloemol · 07/10/2021 01:33

You are an idiot. They still vape nicotine, it’s still addictive, it’s unnecessary and long term health effects are not known.

I would be supporting to stop

ImportSave · 07/10/2021 01:57

You might want to look into it more. Seems like some of the liquid is really bad for you. People have been seriously ill from it.

NumberTheory · 07/10/2021 05:24

What's he vaping? If nicotine, YABU. It's highly addictive in vape form too and associated with many of the same diseases as smoking including lung disease, heart disease and asthma.

He's setting himself up for a higher risk of early death and horrible diseases and a habit he will find expensive and really, really hard to break. Why on earth wouldn't you be bothered about that?

Which diseases?

More damning research is coming out about vaping. I'd have a word with him and suggest he does some research. He may pretend not to be interested but the seed of doubt will be sown and maybe he'll look into it.

Again, what research?
Snoozer11 · 07/10/2021 12:39

He's still inhaling something sticky so that's never going to be healthy.

Although he's a teen and it sounds like a phase that'll be over soon enough.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/10/2021 12:39

I would certainly raise it with him and discuss how bad for you it is.

I’m not suggesting that any MN phrases like “livid”, “fuming”’or “Merry hell” should apply Grin but there should definitely be a conversation.

Any data or peer reviewed research you can link to?

@Hidehi4

I’ve just started vaping to give up smoking and my god I have never felt so out of breath even when sitting doing nothing and I now have a cough which I never did when I smoked. We don’t know the long term damage vapes will have on people’s lungs unlike smoking. Teens will do what they want though but don’t think it’s better then smoking. You would have one cigarette then nothing til the next one where you see kids walking around constantly puffing on their vapes
Interesting anecdote. Everyone I know vapes including dp and since starting vaping and giving up smoking all of them have lost their smokers cough, none of them wake up with phlegm on their chests and their breathing is easier since taking up the vape, which is suggested by the NHS as a safer alternative to smoking.

Such low standards

Seesawmummadaw · 07/10/2021 19:19

I would be horrified. Do you know what he is vaping?

hangrylady · 07/10/2021 20:27

@GemGemma

I didn't think anything could harder to give up than cigs - I was wrong! Was so addicted to vaping - it's so much nicer, so convenient, affordable, NO YUK SMELL = it became part of my hand! Awful insidious addiction - It was hell to quit - I would not let my child smoke it. There is a good series on Netflix about teens addicted to vape.
How did you manage to quit. I vape and really want to give up. I'm an ex smoker.
