To not be bothered if DS vapes

Dsvape · 05/10/2021 18:10

DS is 16 (17 in November) and I have found out that he has a vape. I found out because he was seen doing it by a friend of mine. Apparently he goes off the school grounds (6th former allowed out for lunch) every day to do it. He does it with a couple of friends. I honestly can’t get too upset about it he’s almost 17 and it’s not like vaping is horrific for your health like smoking is he’s not doing it on school grounds I am honestly not that bothered by it. I am glad by friend told me but I don’t feel the need to raise it with DS. Or am I being a completely negligent mother if I do that is this something that should upset me? Any advice?

Oh god people popcorn lung is not a thing. Please do more research before you start peddling harmful theories like this.
Does vaping cause popcorn lung? No. There’s no good evidence that e-cigarettes could cause the lung condition called popcorn lung. There’s been no confirmed cases of popcorn lung reported in people who use e-cigarettes. www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/does-vaping-cause-popcorn-lung

@MurielSpriggs I have literally just posted the same thing.

Vaping does not cause popcorn lung.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 05/10/2021 22:15

Yuk

I'd be horrified if it were my DS

Is he doing it to give up smoking? If not what on Earth is the point?

GemGemma · 05/10/2021 22:31

I didn't think anything could harder to give up than cigs - I was wrong! Was so addicted to vaping - it's so much nicer, so convenient, affordable, NO YUK SMELL = it became part of my hand! Awful insidious addiction - It was hell to quit - I would not let my child smoke it. There is a good series on Netflix about teens addicted to vape.

SnarkyBag · 05/10/2021 22:34

My dad started vaping to help give up smoking, once he was diagnosed with COPD the consultant insisted he stopped vaping. Inhaling chemicals is never going to be great for your lungs so yeah I’d be more than a bit upset.

Plus vaping looks ridiculous

Flufferty · 05/10/2021 22:36

I couldn't get worked up about it

Littlepaws18 · 05/10/2021 22:36

He's filling his developing lungs full of chemicals. There have been so many articles of people dying from vaping in the short term let alone long term. I would definitely not be happy with this.

lolliwillowes · 05/10/2021 22:39

I advise taking up smoking, vaping and other drugs when one reaches 80 yrs old then one need never worry about long term effects Grin

I don't advise it, but this is clearly bollox .
Hidehi4 · 05/10/2021 22:49

I’ve just started vaping to give up smoking and my god I have never felt so out of breath even when sitting doing nothing and I now have a cough which I never did when I smoked.
We don’t know the long term damage vapes will have on people’s lungs unlike smoking. Teens will do what they want though but don’t think it’s better then smoking. You would have one cigarette then nothing til the next one where you see kids walking around constantly puffing on their vapes

Hapiey · 06/10/2021 07:20

Yabu

Indoctro · 06/10/2021 07:56

He is 16 years old there is very little you can do to stop him even if you wanted to.

Justcallmebebes · 06/10/2021 08:55

Vaping is not harmless as you are filling your lungs with smoke. Anyone who takes up vaping for its own sake is a fool

Flufferty · 06/10/2021 09:05

Vaping does not fill your lungs with "smoke".

Popcornriver · 06/10/2021 09:24

The chemical that caused popcorn lung was removed from all UK vape liquids ages ago and the deaths in the US were caused by black market cartridges. Vaping in the UK is nothing like smoking, the NHS says it's something like 95% safer to start with so you're spreading misinformation.

I think vaping is a brilliant tool for those addicted to cigarettes and struggling to stop smoking. They should be encouraged if anything. A couple of close family members took up vaping and I was so pleased their risk of heart complications and cancers has massively reduced. They're also much safer because the risk of 2nd hand smoke is nothing like that of cigarette smoke.

Saying all that I think it's stupid to take up vaping if you're not already addicted to nicotine and wouldn't support my teen doing it.

How would you "not let" a 16 year old vape? Confused
FreeBritnee · 06/10/2021 09:36

I thought it caused popcorn lung?

FreeBritnee · 06/10/2021 09:39

How would you "not let" a 16 year old vape?

I’ll do some thinking for you ....

  1. say they are not vaping in the house
  2. refuse to give allowance if that money was being used to buy vaping fluid etc
  3. say there will be X consequences if you find out they have continued to vape when you’ve said they are not to until they are an adult

So whilst you cannot be with the child every moment of every day you can make it clear you are against what they are doing and you’d like them to stop.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 06/10/2021 09:39

You can certainly have a conversation with him about the dangers etc, but realistically there's very little you could do to make him stop. Like most things with teenagers, if he's paying for it himself.

When my DDs were young I was very adamant about certain things 'i wouldn't allow' when they were teens, I've had to adjust this a lot as they've grown up.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 06/10/2021 09:42

@LemonWeb

Nicotine causes bladder cancer. So I’d not allow my dc to vape.
Not allow? How do you propose to stop them once they're at secondary school? DS2 buys shit from the cafeteria, sweets on the way home, there's nothing I can do.
Popcornriver · 06/10/2021 09:47

LemonWeb

Cancer Research states that nicotine alone does not cause bladder cancer or any other cancers.

Shmithecat2 · 06/10/2021 10:12

Loving this vape scare bingo...
Popcorn lung ✔
Bladder cancer ✔
Death by vape ✔

Carry on, this is hilarious. LINE! 😂

BarefootHippieChick · 06/10/2021 10:24

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall

I think it's stupid when they haven't even smoked. What's the point? Do they think it looks cool or something

Yes they do. Vaping is seen as cool among teenagers, it's the equivalent of 90s teens smoking.

Yabuhuny · 06/10/2021 13:11

Sorry but I think yabu you should at least try and stop him

Um... as I said upthread, that's exactly what I am doing. I couldn't make my feelings any more clear.

However, that doesn't equate to "not letting" them do it. My DC are absolutely not allowed to vape in the house, and they stick to this. They know I think it's repellent. I have said that I am not funding it (though how does that make a difference to a teenager with a job? They just fund their own rotten habit).

The only one I haven't done is "consequences if I find out they have continued to vape". Not least as I am not sure what those consequences would be (being keen on 'natural consequences'). Moreover, teenagers are very good at covering their tracks, should the need arise!
