To not be bothered if DS vapes

Dsvape · 05/10/2021 18:10

DS is 16 (17 in November) and I have found out that he has a vape. I found out because he was seen doing it by a friend of mine. Apparently he goes off the school grounds (6th former allowed out for lunch) every day to do it. He does it with a couple of friends. I honestly can’t get too upset about it he’s almost 17 and it’s not like vaping is horrific for your health like smoking is he’s not doing it on school grounds I am honestly not that bothered by it. I am glad by friend told me but I don’t feel the need to raise it with DS. Or am I being a completely negligent mother if I do that is this something that should upset me? Any advice?

Ive just found out my DD and DS 17 and 15 do it. Tbh im not happy about it because long term health effects are not yet fully known. However i think with teenagers the more fuss you make about something the more attractive it becomes to them. I made it clear I wish they didn't do it however now I just don't mention it in the hope they grow out of it.

AndOtherStories · 05/10/2021 18:15

I'd be horrified, but also recognise that the only difference me being horrified would make would be to encourage it.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 05/10/2021 18:18

What is he vaping and where is he getting it from?

LolaButt · 05/10/2021 18:54

It can in the short term cause lung problems which can be fatal. Up to you though. Your kid.

MyPatronusIsACat · 05/10/2021 18:56

@Dsvape

Is he vaping to try and stop smoking?

If not, then he is an idiot, and you are ridiculous to support him doing it.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 05/10/2021 19:15

At least it’s not cigarettes would be my view
It has caused lung issues though so it might be worth encouraging him to research it
The vape juice seems a bit sort of sleazy to me... but I can’t really account for that judgement!

Fallagain · 05/10/2021 19:17

Have you googled popcorn lung or side effects of vaping?

MiniCooperLover · 05/10/2021 19:22

and it’s not like vaping is horrific for your health like smoking is ....

Less harmful but still not great according to BHF.

LemonWeb · 05/10/2021 19:22

Nicotine causes bladder cancer. So I’d not allow my dc to vape.

DrManhattan · 05/10/2021 19:23

I'd be gutted

Sweettea1 · 05/10/2021 19:23

Vaping to quit smoking then yes thats the purpose of them.
Vaping just for the sake off it I would question why?

VaguelyInteresting · 05/10/2021 19:24

Ummm Google “popcorn lung”

It’s not a harmless habit.

DrWankincense · 05/10/2021 19:26

YABU.
That's like saying it's alright if he does cocaine cos at least it's not heroin. Confused

scarpa · 05/10/2021 19:27

It may not be as bad as smoking but it's still burning stuff and inhaling the burned stuff into your lungs, usually via coils made of plastics - not stuff you want to be breathing in. Certain liquids or faults with my tank make my lungs really hurt.

I wouldn't encourage it (and I say this as someone who took up vaping to quit smoking 6 years ago and haven't yet managed to kick the vaping - it's really addictive and I really wish I'd never started.)

Jenufer · 05/10/2021 19:27

I suspect it will turn out to be just as harmful as cigarettes, and I hate the fact that my DC have vaped or still vape. I think it's revolting, and have told them so. However, they are also old enough to make their own bad decisions about this. The only things that I have said are a) it's disgusting; b) they're not to do it in the house, because I hate it and I don't want the smell of it in the house; and c) I am not funding it. Beyond that, it's up to them to make a bad choice

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 05/10/2021 19:27

I think it's stupid when they haven't even smoked. What's the point? Do they think it looks cool or something

BrendaBubbles · 05/10/2021 19:29

Is he actually doing it with nicotine or just the flavoured ones for making big clouds etc?

Amzpie · 05/10/2021 21:39

I don’t know op I’m torn

Rosehip10 · 05/10/2021 21:40

Yabu. Vaping is common.

3luckystars · 05/10/2021 21:45

Common things are common.

I read that on the back of a teabag.

smallybells · 05/10/2021 21:51

"it’s not like vaping is horrific for your health like smoking is"

It really is. Popcorn lung etc. Teens in America have died from vaping.

It is the same as smoking - you're inhaling things into your lungs that you shouldn't be, that chemically have to be altered to be in a vapour form and are usually full of unnatural flavours etc.

DriftingBlue · 05/10/2021 21:52

How on earth did you arrive at the conclusion that it isn’t harmful to his health?

cricketmum84 · 05/10/2021 21:54

Oh god people popcorn lung is not a thing. Please do more research before you start peddling harmful theories like this.

BurntO · 05/10/2021 21:55

You are ignorant or extremely naive. At least act like you give a shit about your child’s health Hmm

cricketmum84 · 05/10/2021 21:55

There you go. "Popcorn lung" is not linked to vaping.
