Or are all women's jumpers pathetically thin?

Looking to buy a couple of jumpers for winter. Why oh why are they all so bloody thin? Are thick jumpers too manly or am I missing something?

I buy men’s jumpers, T -shirts, and shirts. Much better quality, better fit, longer, and reasonably priced. Even more so secondhand. An XS or S is perfect. Fed up with women’s clothing, the long sleeved stuff ends halfway up my forearm, and ends before my belly button!

MotherWilliam · 02/10/2021 07:20

Like PPs, I've given up and am going to just go for M&S mens in future. Have just been clearing out some I bought DS to take to uni and which he never wore. Tried them on myself and lo and behold, much cosier than my women's ones and a good length. Perfect.

Sammysquiz · 02/10/2021 07:43

I nearly bought a lambswool jumper online but am worried about itchiness. I’d wear something under it but if it’s a rollneck would I end up frantically scratching my neck all day??

KittyBurrito · 02/10/2021 07:45

Look for Scottish or Nordic brands - we do proper thick stuff up here!

Men's machine washable cashmere from Edinburgh Woollen Mill in the sale, end of.

Discovered 4 years ago and they've been a wardrobe staple ever since.

dottiedodah · 02/10/2021 07:51

Curly haired assassin. Too right! I have thermal vests and a few cashmere carries.they are expensive though and can only be hand-wash. A thin jumper with a vest and a cardigan is supposed to be warmer than one big layer apparently ( several layers)

londonrach · 02/10/2021 07:51

Yanbu. They also vvvv short so you get a cold mid drift

SirChenjins · 02/10/2021 10:26

@RaininSummer

Expensive but I found a company called house of bruar last week when looking for good jumpers.
House of Bruar is amazing! As a op said it’s like a very upmarket, beautifully styled garden centre in what looks like a country house nestled in the hills. We’re going to Pitlochry next week for the school holidays and our 14 year old DS has specifically asked to go there for its Christmas stuff - it’s very lovely. It’s wool and cashmere hall alone is worth a visit.
nofuelshortagehere · 02/10/2021 10:32

It's not just jumpers that are thin. General trend with much of women's clothes. Underwear should not be visible and so much is so thin it can be without additional layers.

Quidity · 02/10/2021 10:38

You need www.woolovers.com/ in your life

justasking111 · 02/10/2021 10:47

If you're tall Google tunics that's where the long ones are hiding

RaininSummer · 02/10/2021 15:31

House of bruar sounds amazing. I had no idea it was a place to visit. Too far away for me sadly but my amazing purple cably hoodie arrived this morning. Think I will live in it this winter.

DolphinDreams · 02/10/2021 15:43

Wait... you all buy MEN'S JUMPERS???? I have cast covetous eyes at them for years and it never occurred to me I could just ... buy oneConfused. Aren't the arms always way too long ?

NutellaEllaElla · 02/10/2021 15:45

Yes! It's ridiculous! Men's jumpers are much thicker and warmer and they don't even need them. Such a waste. It's the next pockets

DotBall · 02/10/2021 16:02

When Matalan get their men’s lambswool jumpers in, buy them…buy them ALL. They are fab for knocking around in, walks outdoors etc. and so cheap!

My mum has bought from Woolovers for years until they got taken over and prices shot up. She’s a Matalan mens’ woolly convert since last winter.

Fairyliz · 02/10/2021 16:22

They’ve definitely got thinner over the years. I volunteer in a charity shop and often do the sorting and steaming. We sometimes get a bag that is obviously from an old lady with clothes that are 20/30 years old.
The difference in quality and thickness compared to today’s clothes is amazing. Even ordinary brands from 30 years ago were well made and good thick wool. Nowadays most knitwear is so thin it’s practically see through.

Fairyliz · 02/10/2021 16:28

@DolphinDreams Surprisingly the arms aren’t too bad and I have short arms. Ok I have to fold a cuff back but I think it looks quite neat. I sometimes buy M and S men’s jumpers. I am a size 12 in ladies so buy a men’s small if I want to wear something underneath it and extra small if I want it more fitted.
MinnieMountain · 02/10/2021 16:59

I buy men’s pyjamas after someone mentioned it on here. Thicker cotton and they have pockets.

DolphinDreams · 02/10/2021 21:06

Gosh, this has opened up whole new shopping vistas.... I'm short but have big breasts and so am always looking for a bit of extra length. Can't wait to find it in the men's section!

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 02/10/2021 21:30

Tkmaxx had fab lambswool jumpers for £20 today.

RedBonnet · 02/10/2021 22:13

I crochet my own, to whatever size/shape/thickness/wool type I want.

Crochet is so easy to learn and can be done anywhere, waiting rooms, buses etc.

I have so many jumpers now, some cardigans too (same pattern). I can add pickets, collars, hoods. Embellish the edges. Possibilities are endless

I get antsy if I have nothing to crochet 😳
Yarn is expensive though so certainly not cost effective, but much better than buying them x

RedBonnet · 02/10/2021 22:13

Pockets not pickets 🤣🤣

Moonshine5 · 02/10/2021 22:17

Literally everything in Uniqlo

Mountainpika · 02/10/2021 22:21

I'm in the knit your own camp. Or ask someone to knit for you. The problem is though, as someone has said, people aren't willing to pay what it really costs in hours to make, and good yarns come at a price. Acrylics are much better these days and pretty good, especially acrylic and wool mixes.

Mary46 · 02/10/2021 22:44

Agree op. Im very tall so the mens have a bit more length in them. Some are too short on me had look in Primark.
