I got asked this by a child in my work today and I was completely stumped 😂 do they do T. rex arms? Go on mumsnet tell me what you think Centaurs do with their human arms when they're galloping so I can report back tomorrow. (Hospital ward young child extremely unwell all around and I told them id do some serious research)

I am now picturing a baby centaur being called in a sling across its mums chest

CatsBooksAndCoffee · 25/09/2021 05:01

@MrsTulipTattsyrup

I think they pump their arms like a human runner, for extra traction. Either that or do showy-offy jazz hands to demonstrate how superior their horsey legs are!
🤣🤣🤣🤣

This question is doing the rounds on TikTok. I love the woman in this video acting out the options...

Nope! Gah! No idea how to share it, which is a shame as it's very funny.

Sirzy · 25/09/2021 08:39

I am picturing the sling across the human chest because then the arms can be used to comfort the baby.

But on that point I wonder how a centaur breastfeeds?

AtlasPine · 25/09/2021 08:43

@WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy

I love the random questions kids ask. DH is a solicitor and was at court supporting a child who needed to be questioned by the judge in a case. All very solemn and serious.

He asked the boy if he had any questions to which he asked ‘how many monkeys do you think there are in the universe’ 😂

Grin

What a great kid!

This thread has caused a lot of hilarity on our ward today thank you 😊

It all depends.

If they are in holiday they carry their surfboard.

Or they hold the lead if their Centaur Dog if taking it for a run round the park.

If it is a very hot day they have to gallop back from the Mr Whippy van with a cone in each hand before they melt.

I saw one On Ice once but he wasn’t very good, 4 skates are hard to co-ordinate, so he didn’t risk using his arms to lift his partner. In truth he mostly used them to cling on to the barrier round the edge.

ooft · 25/09/2021 21:07

@EdgeOfTheSky which raises the question - what do Centaur Dogs do with their front dog legs when they are running?????

GoIntoTheLight · 25/09/2021 21:26

I don’t think they pump their arms - it wouldn’t work with their bodies. And they wouldn’t carry a bow and arrow at all times.

I think, as one poster said, they clench their fists and tuck their elbows into their bodies, a bit like the pose you make while you’re making your way through a tightly packed crowd. It wouldn’t look cool but it would be aerodynamic.

Stigsmother · 25/09/2021 21:29

Ok. At walk their arms are relaxed by their side, at trot they move like a jogger's, but at canter and gallop it's a lateral circular movement, like when we used to play at trainsSmile
Hope this helps

AuntyFungal · 25/09/2021 22:01

Superman arms when running.

Not everybody knows this but Mick Jagger ripped off the strut and pivot stylings of the centaurs. ‘True fact’! Wink

BillMasheen · 25/09/2021 22:04

Ok so approaching this scientifically, then the closest we have in terms f balance and movement is a rider who’s isn’t using reins.

So I looked for videos online of riders onboard during a lunge lesson.

And got this

The action starts as the horse moves into a canter at approx 7:45

So much for that idea 🤣

In reality, think they would hold their Arms as a Rider would if resting on the human versions thighs, sort of on the horse shoulder.

BillMasheen · 25/09/2021 22:12

Oooo

At around 1:44 the centaur left of centre screen accelerates. His arm movements look natural. He kind of swings them, and I can imagine him holding them more, stiffly as the speed picks up, but swinging them out for balance over difficult terrain.

Actually, if they are forest creatures, or inhabit rocky Greek islands, maybe they rarely do a flat gallop. Makes sense that horse is a steppe creature, but that large quadruped niche is filled by centaurs when the ground is not so open.

noodlezoodle · 03/10/2021 01:23

This may be my favourite ever thread. Slightly lost it at the baby centaurs flailing around like Phoebe from Friends.

NotMyCat · 03/10/2021 01:38

There was an amazing FB post about surgeons debating where the heart would be in a centaur and how to do CPR.. will try and find it

HoppingPavlova · 03/10/2021 02:09

Jogging arms?
