It might be interesting to see how you would feel if your name was used as a slur. Enter your name into the generator and it changes the use of the name Karen to your own.

Read this post all wrong. For a second there, I thought you were saying you'd prefer the film was called Matilda.

karen has been hijacked to stereotype white women of a certain age.

No Karen is a shorthand way to refer to a racist white woman. It’s not stereotyping white women. Age has nothing to do correct use of Karen. It can’t be helped that people are misusing the term because they don’t understand it.

RevolvingPivot · 24/09/2021 19:11

Your just drawing more attention to the slur Karen. 🤷‍♀️

'Misogyny' is another word that's being misused. Thanks to mumsnet.

WizardOfAus · 24/09/2021 19:12

The sequel is called, “Kevin”

It’s about Karen’s husband.

HereForThis · 24/09/2021 19:15

Or Darren.

I've seen that before. Think there's a series somewhere

Heartofglass12345 · 24/09/2021 19:16

Awful! I can't believe people still use it to be honest, it's pathetic and childish. Imagine being called Karen and this kind of film being made!

No, it is not a reference to a racist. Karen is a name.

Perfectly normal women are called Karen. They are not racists.

If someone is a racist then call them a racist!

I was called Karen until I felt compelled to change my name because of the abuse I read on an almost a daily basis. Abuse not because of my character, behaviour or indeed anything to do with me personally... simply because I had the misfortune to be called Karen.

My parents chose my name because they liked it. Think how you might feel if years down the line a name you took time in choosing for your child was then turned into an insult.

I can't believe the hatred shown here.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 24/09/2021 19:24

If you want to talk about racism, talk about racism and fight against it. Do not use people's names to insult them. I can't believe this needs repeating again and again.

People who use offensive stereotypes to communicate are showing how inarticulate and, in this case, misogynistic and ageist they are. It really undermines any point they are trying to make.

OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 19:24

You know full well the name Mohammed/Mohamed is the prophets name

The Karen term is no doubt annoying to those called Karen

But others seriously what are you annoyed about being pulled up on your racist attitude that you thought was so well hidden or that it a broader term that apart from irritating has no impact on your life

It might be interesting to see how you would feel if you were subjected to covert racism more often than not. I put my name in, and I can honestly say it was nothing in comparison to having to navigate racism in my life.

OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 19:28

That’s the point

The term Karen isn’t about those who are directly racist

It’s an attitude that is hard to pinpoint

Call someone racist who hasn’t used a racist term but someone knows there are being racist towards them what do you think the response is ? Yes I am being racist. No it’s how dare you call me that I have not said xy or z

Squills · 24/09/2021 19:32

@emuloc

No, I don't know what it's like to encounter racism but I do know what it feels like to feel I had no option but to change my name through no fault of my own. I also know that other women named Karen have done the same, have left jobs and have been abused. How does that help you?

I was not aware that I had said that whatever you are complaining about helps me, did I?

Im sure all the Dicks of the world would be happy to know that you have banned people’s names from being used as an insult.

A stereotype of a type of racist can only be offensive to racists. Just saying “you’re a racist” to everyone racist would be inarticulate. The term Karen is rich with history and nuance.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 24/09/2021 19:42

LOL. Such fine irony Grin

Moonwatcher1234 · 24/09/2021 19:42

Sorry but can’t really get exercised by this… people have far worse nonsense to put up with on a daily basis than their name being commandeered as shorthand for a certain type of officious woman (regardless of race as
as far as I’m concerned).

Really... please do explain

How can it be inarticulate to call someone a racist but perfectly nuanced to call someone Karen?

Oh this name generator is great. Try it with yours.

Oh this name generator is great. Try it with yours.

I tried that, thought it was quite funny.

My name is often used as short hand for a slutty female.

I have honestly never given a shit. I love my name, I love its meaning. No amount of memes on its sluttiness would change my feelings.
