@LuckyAmy1986 Not really gone the way you want this thread has it? Wink

I am dying to watch this film 'KAREN' now. Thanks for the heads-up. Grin

I think someone would only be offended by the content (which is about a racist white woman) if it hit a raw nerve, and/or they saw themselves in the character.

Just saying.
Agree

Antinerak · 24/09/2021 17:09

The only people offended by the nickname 'Karen' are the ones who really fit the stereotype. If you're upset about a racist white woman being called Karen, maybe it's because it hits too close to home. You should deal with that in your own time. We see you Smile

LuckyAmy1986 · 24/09/2021 17:25

@Antinerak funny you say that, o just went down a YouTube black hole and it was a load of interviews with people named Karen about this thing around the name. Quite a few young girls said they don’t care because they know they aren’t “like that”.

However

If you're upset about a racist white woman being called Karen, maybe it's because it hits too close to home

This doesn’t make sense. Why does me feeling sorry for people called Karen mean that I am a racist white woman?

OP posts:
LuckyAmy1986 · 24/09/2021 17:28

@Antinerak why can a racist white woman not be called racist? Why can’t a racist just be called a racist?

OP posts:
OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 17:29

Terrible that a slang term is being used in such

Not all white middle aged middle class women are like this you know

Such prejudice
@Antinerak why can a racist white woman not be called racist? Why can’t a racist just be called a racist?
They can. But it’s not an either or binary. What is wrong with using more than one word for racists to describe in shorthand the nuances of different racist presentations?

OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 17:52

The term Karen is used against privileged older women who will indirectly be racist

They may not use racist terms but it’s still there and it still harms people

For years they have been able to go about their merry way without being shamed now they can’t

Boofuckinghoo

LuckyAmy1986 · 24/09/2021 18:22

@PlanDeRaccordement get what you are saying, but in this case it’s not JUST a word it’s a lot of women’s actual name.

What if you are called Karen? Can you be offended or just sit quietly and wait for it all to blow over?

They have to give a character a name, her being named "The Racist", does not work in story telling. Karen is of the moment, it gets them publicity as you have just proven.

HereForThis · 24/09/2021 18:31

I don't use Karen but I'm glad they made a film to bring back the original (ish) use of it. If people are going to use it (which they will unless it becomes a crime not to), they may as well use it right.

'Karen' was always/mainly about racism, not teens trying it out for effect on their mums.

HereForThis · 24/09/2021 18:34

I may actually watch this (People's opinion ratings don't matter to me). The image alone already makes me laugh. Thanks @Ashitaka for posting.

LuckyAmy1986 · 24/09/2021 18:45

@MatildaIThink I didn’t mean it terms of the film just in general. But yes I agree about the publicity for the film!

Proudboomer · 24/09/2021 18:53

I am going to make a film.
The story is going to be a group of Pakistani men grooming the white pre teen girls in their street in Bradford. I am going to call it Mohammed after the lead male groomer. It will stereotype every Muslim man as a sexual predator and the new internet language will use the name Mohammed as a way of describing non white sexual predators.

I am sure it will be a great hit.

I am sure no one sees anything wrong with this and netflicks will be beating down my door for rights to show my film.

OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 18:55

What would you like the film to be called?

It’s about racism that is more underhand and often hard to call out.

The term Karen has been used for that. Isn’t it that films need to be made to highlight such racism more problematic ?

OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 18:58

Seriously

You are comparing a group of men in north England (and using the prophets name) to underhand racist behaviour that is so prevalent in not only US but our society too few even recognise this because certain words are not used

Hmm

If it distresses women with the name “Karen” to that degree, they can just change their name. After all that is what Hitlers family did.

Tealightsandd · 24/09/2021 18:59

@Ponoka7

Older women are the only group who we can stereotype. Ageism is the allowed ism.
Yep. I'd add in ableism, and a hefty dose of misogyny too.
HappyGoPlucky · 24/09/2021 19:01

Misogyny. Am comforted at the 2 star review rating.

Already done. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Girls_(TV_series)

And the lead abusers name hasn’t been used to describe “nonwhite sexual predators”

Hmm

No I am using a common name in a section of our society to stereotype them Asian men. In the same way that karen has been hijacked to stereotype white women of a certain age.
Girlmum89 · 24/09/2021 19:06

Yabu and sensitive. It looks hilarious.

Is your name Karen by any chance?

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/09/2021 19:07

@HappyGoPlucky

Misogyny. Am comforted at the 2 star review rating.
Misogyny is the irrational hatred of all women. A film about a racist white woman is not misogyny.
