Ridiculous name for baby

PegorySpeck · 23/09/2021 16:24

My step son and gf have recently called their newborn a really awful pretentious name. I know it’s their choice but neither me nor my husband can bring ourselves to say it in a sentence. Every time we talk about him we say ‘the baby’ or the ‘little one’. We have been very diplomatic and said things like ‘ oh that’s unusual’ but they have started to notice we don’t use his name in conversation and it’s becoming tense.

Any advice on how to move forward?

Beetlejuice? I could see issues in repeatedly using that.

Ditto Candyman. I hear Michael Gove appears if you say his name 3 times too, but no one would inflict that on a baby.

Or just a really unfortunate choice like Adolf or Mao?

Or something to do with where the baby was conceived - Hot-Tub? Travelodge?

ShimmyYay · 23/09/2021 16:49

I think we must know what the name is ….

Margo34 · 23/09/2021 16:49

Just here to know the name!

River, Bear, Wolf, Forest, Daisy, Rose, Chip, Apple, Blossom?

Or is it more like.....a more random noun, Spaghetti? Biscuit? Kid?

RoomOfRequirement · 23/09/2021 16:49

If my PIL refused to say my baby's name it'd be cause to go very very low contact with them. It's so rude and you need to get over yourselves.

1forAll74 · 23/09/2021 16:49

Do you know anyone else in the country who has this name. or is it so over the top, that nobody has heard of it before. If it's so over the top, it will be ok, as there are a lot of weird and funny names about these days.

balernobetty · 23/09/2021 16:49

How rude of you. This is not about you, this is their choice

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 23/09/2021 16:50

Say the name FGS

AssassinatedBeauty · 23/09/2021 16:50

You're just going to have to suck it up and use his name. It's such a small thing to risk a major fall out over. You can't realistically think that you can refuse to ever say his name??

ThanksMateThanksMate · 23/09/2021 16:50

Wee Shampoo McDonald?

AdaColeman · 23/09/2021 16:50

I'm guessing Baron or Prince, but whatever it is you must use it. He won't be Baby for much longer! Bear Bear

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 23/09/2021 16:50

What I mean is, call the poor child by its name. This is not about you.

Mummapenguin20 · 23/09/2021 16:51

Ooo whats the name

MagnoliaBeige · 23/09/2021 16:51

@Blondeshavemorefun

Well obviously we need to know the name first
Why? Even if it gets the mumsnet seal of disapproval, the OP should use the name chosen by the parents.
VickyEadieofThigh · 23/09/2021 16:51

It's actually against the law to run a thread on MN about a kid's name and NOT SAY WHAT THE NAME IS SO SAY IT.

Also - their child, their rules. You cannot spend the rest of your life avoiding the use of it - for one thing, they will notice and it will create an ugly conflict.

Pipsquiggle · 23/09/2021 16:51

What's his name?

You will need to get over it. Start practising his name by telling us.

I mean it might be unusual to you, but I guarantee you, there are so many random names out there, most people will not bat an eyelid

debwong · 23/09/2021 16:51

@geeses

Ha, is it Forest? Because he was conceived in a forest? Grin
Or is it Bikeshed?
DedalusBloom · 23/09/2021 16:51

Pretentious.... pretentious. Hmmmm. Is it Beowulf or similar? Gawain? Hatshepsut?

GrandTheftWalrus · 23/09/2021 16:52

Shes not going to tell us the name.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 23/09/2021 16:52

You are going to have to use the name

Just tell us the name, it might not be as bad as you think

Blossomtoes · 23/09/2021 16:52

Nowt wrong with Blossom @Margo34! I really want to know what this pretentious name is. Is it god with a small g for humility, like Grace Slick?

TastyToastie · 23/09/2021 16:53

You'll be fine, you just need to get used to saying it.

Practice on us. Right now.

thenightsky · 23/09/2021 16:53

@czycoup

It's Balonz isn't it?
You beat me to it! Grin
DoofusRick · 23/09/2021 16:53

It’s a name that is also a noun so we feel it is so completely out of context

All names are nouns. Proper nouns count as nouns.

AmberLynn1536 · 23/09/2021 16:53

I’m guessing they are Michael Jackson fans and they have called their child Blanket.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 23/09/2021 16:53

However distasteful you find the name, it's bad manners not to use it however 'awful' you think the name is.

Also curious, is it Bear, Tiger, Fox, Wolf, Archer, Cooper, Fletcher, Carter, Gray, Steele etc?
