Ridiculous name for baby

PegorySpeck · 23/09/2021 16:24

My step son and gf have recently called their newborn a really awful pretentious name. I know it’s their choice but neither me nor my husband can bring ourselves to say it in a sentence. Every time we talk about him we say ‘the baby’ or the ‘little one’. We have been very diplomatic and said things like ‘ oh that’s unusual’ but they have started to notice we don’t use his name in conversation and it’s becoming tense.

Any advice on how to move forward?

That’s truly awful and there’s no way of shortening it either. That poor kid 😢 I think I’d make the best of it and go with Storm though. I bet he’ll change it in later life though.

Get off your high horse, the both of you. That is your grandson, you are both causing barriers because of a name.

This is modern times. You no longer get traditional names, like Albert, Alfred, Benjamin or Joseph etc. The child will not get bullied either because there will be someone else in his year with an unusual name.

If any of my relatives wee like you and your husband, I would see yous totally different and would be pushing yous aside. I can only hope that in the time that has passed, yous have come round to the name and learned to love your grandson.

Personally I love the name, it is unique, just as every child is, he will grow up and go on to do great things in life

Well this has made the Mirror page so hopefully OPs SS and SDIL won't read it.

@PegorySpeck

The reason is more about them though. Stormy represents their life before they met, water is the continuity (infinity) of their love for each other and cloud was the ‘silver lining’ when realised they were expecting.

It is totally their choice, of course. I personally think it is a bit naf. I’m just glad they haven’t directly asked us what we think because I’m a terrible liar and would feel so false saying oh that’s lovely which is why we opted for oh that’s unusual. I mean what can you say?

Reminds me of the joke about people naming kids after the first thing they saw - on reflection that's probably best left.

YANBU OP that is a fucking howler.

ToxicBuns · 21/03/2022 10:39

Not your baby, not your choice. I personally think the name is beautiful and has actual meaning, love, thought, and a story. You'll both just have to get over yourselves. As for the "ooo he will be bullied crap, no I highly doubt that.

So the journos don't check posting dates either!

I am sure they could find something that is less than 6 months old.

Mummato2boys2912 · 21/03/2022 10:43

I'm traditional too,bit it's common and the "in thing" to use unique names.

Years ago I heard someone called their daughter pocahontas, don't know if it's true or not but it got alot of tongues wagging at the time

Changeforthis79 · 21/03/2022 20:50

Oh I think it's lovely..v.unusual but can you not think of it like an American Indian name? Very descriptive and beautiful

viques · 21/03/2022 20:57

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall

I know brothers called fox and fawn
That is ridiculous. Everyone knows Faun is a girls name. Stag is the boy deer name. Or Antler.
Mybumlooksbig · 21/03/2022 22:40

Poor kid...

Cookiecrumblepie · 21/03/2022 23:22

Just use a nickname. Problem solved.

That's so cringey, poor kid
Chloemol · 21/03/2022 23:35

Just be honest with them. You would prefer to call him Storm, and I would mention that at school he is likely to be mocked

However if they insist you have to grit your teeth and use the name

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/03/2022 23:42

Oh wow, that is truly dreadful ,poor kid Shock

That is a truly dreadful name to inflict on any poor child. Anyone else wandering what happens if they split up, given that "Water" is supposed to represent the continuity of their love? Does the child's name have to be changed to something like Fire because it's symbolic of the destruction of their love?

One thing is for certain, they can insist all they like on the full name being used, that child will certainly end up using Storm alone and ignoring the rest. Unless he decides to opt for a complete change and goes for Dave or something instead.

WP1974 · 22/03/2022 00:46

My name is Wendy. When I was a kid people called me "Stormy" all the time...:/

Call her "Mimi"...short, endearing, a cute little nickname. "Mimi Cloud" works too.

AryaStarkWolf · 22/03/2022 08:47

Also "Cloud" meaning Silver Lining only makes sense if their relationship was unhappy surely, it means something good out of something bad, doesn't it?

DaveWillDroz · 22/03/2022 13:55

My advice lies in your question. Move forward. Love you stepson, his girlfriend, and your grandchild more than you love familiarity. It doesn't seem that hard. I hate pretentiousness too, but it's not your child and not your name. Maybe they were being pretentious, but that ship has sailed. Now the child's name is what it is, prioritise long-term, loving relationships above your judgment of them, because that's all it is.

DaveWillDroz · 22/03/2022 14:03

After all that commotion, I think you just don't like any non traditional names. Sure, the reasoning is a bit much, but there have been kids called new agey nature names for decades or probably even centuries. Other than your own hangups and other than how kids often bully other kids for any difference at all, he's not going to get it more than he would've if he'd been called Dave. Not if his parents and grandparents love him and teach him confidence and security, which you're starting out not doing. In the 2020s and 2030s there are going to be far weirder names than Stormy or Storm-Water.

WhenDovesFly · 22/03/2022 14:19

When you said the name - Stormy Water Cloud - and that there was a weird reason behind it, I thought you were going to say they'd used that app - what3words - that helps you identify a place. Maybe that's where they conceived the poor kid. That's actually a place in the middle of nowhere in Japan for anyone who's wondering.

Ellie5341 · 22/03/2022 14:30

I thought where conception took place...

felineweird · 23/03/2022 10:08

I wouldn't worry about the press picking up on this, it's clearly a wind up. Had had me pissing myself laughing though 🤣
