Help - alternative to tyrozets

HermioneKipper · 16/09/2021 18:35

Sorry I know this isn’t an AIBU but I’m desperate and don’t know where else to ask.

I get terrible throats which can easily turn into tonsillitis and they’ve discontinued tyrozets which are amazing and used to stave off tonsillitis for me.

I’ve used the last of my stash and I can feel my sore throat turning south quickly. I CAN’T get tonsillitis. My daughter is back to school, i have twins to look after and my husband has already taken loads of leave etc to cover the kids sickness. I’ll probably get sacked if I take any more time off too

Does anyone know of anything similar that’s still legal to buy? Help me!

hydrogen peroxide mothwash in the supermarket.

around £5
boring brown bottle of hydrogen peroxide that you dilute & lasts forever - about 95p

Crunchymum · 16/09/2021 21:51

@ThinWomansBrain

not remotely like tyrozets (used to love those, haven't had one in years), but try gargling with peroxide. Kills/cures anything
And this is why you should take medical advice on MN, with a massive pinch of salt.
Crunchymum · 16/09/2021 21:55

I've now read the full thread.

Thankfully I've not gargled with the Domestos Grin

scarpa · 16/09/2021 21:56

I tried buying some online the other week in exactly the same circumstances, I was gutted :(

cormorantes · 16/09/2021 22:00

But why have they discontinued tyrozets??? Anything that actually works seems to disappear ...

testudograeca · 16/09/2021 22:04

Since I found out and tried to find/buy last stocks and failed, I rounded up my last ones from all over the house and fret about how far past their sell by date they'll still work...

Silverswirl · 16/09/2021 22:07

@HermioneKipper

It’s not tonsillitis yet and I’m praying it won’t turn into it *@frazzledasarock* as that will lay me up for days.

The GP is so tight with antibiotics my last bout of antibiotics nearly turned into quinsy

I wish they’d rip the buggers out with a rusty spoon but they said I have to get it 8 times in a year for them to do that!

OP I have had awful tonsillitis through my entire life and in my 30’s I have finally found something that works to help stop it. Get yourself some Colgate peroxyl. Seriously. It’s just the best. Gargle making sure it coats your tonsils at the first sign of a sore throat. At least 2 times per day. Leave on after gargling, no rinsing. Gets rid of sore throat so well- you will be thanking me and have a permanent solution!
MMAMPWGHAP · 16/09/2021 22:09

So I use Tyrozets when I have a really bad cough as they sort of numb the back of your throat. Do any of these alternatives do that?

Silverswirl · 16/09/2021 22:10

@Crunchymum
The Colgate product I raved about above is peroxide. It’s a well known chemical that is used diluted to help sore gums esp after dental treatment but it kills bacteria fast.

Janaih · 16/09/2021 22:18

Hydrogen peroxide is sold as a mouthwash in chemists, I thought everyone knew that.

For anyone getting recurrent tonsillitis and being fobbed off by gp, I spent years taking dd to doctor with it, begging for removal. One day after being told it was bacterial not viral (so fucking what, it still hurts and impacts quality of life the same!) I flipped and told the doc I would be bringing her in every week for the next forever until I got a referral to ENT. He sighed and said he'd write them a letter but wasn't hopeful.
A couple of weeks later the ENT consultant took one look in her mouth and agreed they need to come out. She was like a different girl after she'd recovered from the OP. (Not gonna lie it was painful for her)
Don't accept being fobbed off! Insist on referral!

NoviceNewMN · 16/09/2021 22:20

Sorry - haven't read full thread so apologise if discussed upstream -

tyrozets had local anaesthetic in them so this

www.boots.com/ultra-chloraseptic-anaesthetic-throat-spray-15ml-10095640

helps replicate the effect. If you apply it properly (as in for best effect) it makes you gag slightly as it gets into the back of your throad but very effective.

Palavah · 16/09/2021 22:23

@RainBow725

Another gargler here but I use diluted TCP. Again it has a numbing effect and can stop it getting worse.
This. It's a good preventative.
WinterCarlisle · 16/09/2021 22:29

I used to get tonsillitis, it’s awful. In the absence of TCP or peroxide try gargling with neat gin, vodka or any other strong spirit. Used to work a treat when I was a student.

Your choice whether to spit or swallow Wink

BrilloPaddy · 16/09/2021 22:36

Peroxyl mouthwash. It's also amazing for getting rid of tonsil stones.

GrrrlPwr · 16/09/2021 22:37

Gargle as strong salt water as you can manage.

2 hours later gargle dispersible aspirin.

2 hours later peroxide.

And repeat daily!

That should stop it in its tracks!

HermioneKipper · 16/09/2021 22:43

Thank you all so much for these suggestions. I’m sending my husband on shopping spree in the morning for all these items.

In the meantime I have gargled with salt water and some neat vodka. Which I swallowed in a toast to my dearly departed, beloved tyrozets 😭😭😭

So sorry so many of us suffer with dodgy throats and tonsillitis. It’s bloody agonising. And unless you’ve had it, people don’t seem to understand. Think you’re overegging a bad sore throat. Which it most definitely isnt!

I also found this lurking in the bottom of the medicine drawer. It’s 3 years out of date but gave my throat a spritz anyway!

Strepsils. Contain a local anesthetic.

GrrrlPwr · 16/09/2021 23:03

Oh no indeed not. Tonsillitis is on a whole other level of awfulness.

Keeeep gargling!

Notlostjustexploring · 16/09/2021 23:18

I finally tried the salt water gargle a few weeks ago, because I couldn't face the antibiotic side effects again. It actually stopped it in its tracks. Fucking minging, but quite effective.

Adding medical peroxide to shopping list though...

Battlingongraciously · 16/09/2021 23:58

Salt water is very good. The only thing I ever put in my bath is a mug of table salt.

Our skin is our largest organ, soaking in salt water is something that I thought may be recommended due to the covid, but no. Easiest way to really clean the skin.

Battlingongraciously · 17/09/2021 00:00

I've used high end oils in my bath. Very nice French skin care, but nothing leaves your skin as soft and clean as a mug of table salt.

MinnieJackson · 17/09/2021 00:07

What are these magic things??! I've never heard of them and I get tonsilitus about five times a year! Never had it as a child, then had my last baby in 2018 and I have off all the time. One side is constantly swollen aswell. If I can get them in my chemist I can post you some of they're over the counter x

HermioneKipper · 17/09/2021 00:24

@MinnieJackson if you mean tyrozets unfortunately they no longer make them ☹️☹️ They were great if you had that kind of sore throat you feel might turn into tonsillitis. Very kind of you to offer to post though!

Lots of alternatives suggested on this thread though to have a go with!

WildImaginings · 17/09/2021 00:30

Nooo, not Tyrozets!! 😭
