Help - alternative to tyrozets

HermioneKipper · 16/09/2021 18:35

Sorry I know this isn’t an AIBU but I’m desperate and don’t know where else to ask.

I get terrible throats which can easily turn into tonsillitis and they’ve discontinued tyrozets which are amazing and used to stave off tonsillitis for me.

I’ve used the last of my stash and I can feel my sore throat turning south quickly. I CAN’T get tonsillitis. My daughter is back to school, i have twins to look after and my husband has already taken loads of leave etc to cover the kids sickness. I’ll probably get sacked if I take any more time off too

Does anyone know of anything similar that’s still legal to buy? Help me!

I was a bit Shock when I first read about it - I used to get bronchitis, then for about three years after that, any cold or sore throat would develop into bronchitis.
Most pharmacies sell bottles that are 3% peroxide, then you dilute it further - so it's very weak (but so foul it numbs your throat so you can't feel ANYTHING).

I was told that too. Altho my GP has me in at the slightest whiff of tonsillitis as I ignored it once it turned to strep throat and spread fast and I ended up with corneal scarring as a result of a secondary infection (didn’t know that could happen and have been scared of letting it go without getting seen as a result).

My GP wants to know each time I get tonsillitis so they can refer me to getting them removed. Think they’ll stay for now as mine only flare up when I’m stressed.

Gargle with crushed paracetamol also helps relieve the pain.

@Hboo31

Worked in a pharmacy - Chloralieve are the closest replacements we found to stock last year when we realised tyrozets had gone
Thanks so much. I’ll try these

being likened to Trump almost as much as a Shock as when I first read about hydrogen peroxide gargles Grin

Although to be fair, when I had a sore throat that turned out to be the start of covid, the peroxide gargle was my first resort, so maybe more like trump than I'd dared to imagine. I think it was that that caused loss of taste rather than COVID.

NotMyCat · 16/09/2021 19:06

Difflam lozenges are pretty good
I gargle with salt water, eat salted crisps (scrapes the crap off your throat) and drink as many warm drinks as I can

RainBow725 · 16/09/2021 19:07

Another gargler here but I use diluted TCP. Again it has a numbing effect and can stop it getting worse.

letstryagainnow · 16/09/2021 19:09

No more tyrozets ShockThey are bloody brilliant! Nothing else comes close! And I think of myself as a bit of an expert in this area. I'm having mine removed tomorrow for the second time ConfusedSo hopefully I won't need tyrozets again. But I absolutely feel your pain and am interested in these replies.

Sexnotgender · 16/09/2021 19:11

Another who is gutted at the demise of Tyrozets! I’ve still got a box in my drawer for emergencies 😂

I’ve heard Difflam lozenges are good.

OfDragonsDeep · 16/09/2021 19:13

Nooooo, these Tyrozets are the best!

Frogsonglue · 16/09/2021 19:18

Oh god, I'm sorry I haven't got any advice and I'm devastated to hear they've discontinued tyrozets - I rely heavily on them too! Gargling gently with soluble aspirin is the only other thing I've found relieves the pain, but that has no antiseptic/antibiotic value so not sure it'll be much good. Good luck OP xxx

Frogsonglue · 16/09/2021 19:20

Actually, echinacea and peppermint throat spray also works (I think because it's basically pure alcohol Grin). Holland and Barrett stock it. I can't remember the brand but it's a widely available one.

newnameforthistbread · 16/09/2021 19:24

THEY HAVE STOPPED TYROZETS!!!!!!! Ah crap.

I was going to admit i gargle with TCP then was scared I might sound like Trump too 🤣🤣🤣

I also suggest difflam spray.

jajabanks · 16/09/2021 19:27

Difflam throat lozenges, can order from boots on line or in bigger boots stores, other online chemists too. Its what we use since not able to get the other ones

3amgoogle · 16/09/2021 19:32

You can get hydrogen peroxide mothwash in the supermarket. I've found it haults or at least stall tonsillitis.

Some online GPs are more reasonable about prescribing antibiotics for tonsillitis, I psid about £30 last year inc. prescription costs for some penicillin.

cultkid · 16/09/2021 19:37

Coloralieve

I was so sad when they were discontinued

I have only a few left

They saved me many a time

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/09/2021 19:43

Try painting the back of your throat with manuka honey. We have a honey pharmacy near us (not in U.K.) and they prescribed this for DD’s recurring bouts of tonsillitis and sore throats. It worked amazingly well.

Recycledblonde · 16/09/2021 19:47

Totally unrelated but my Uncle was part of the team that invented/devised Tyrozets. He’ll be turning in his grave to hear they’ve been discontinued.

I always get "now tonsillitis is usually viral, why do you think you need antibiotics?" (I've never had viral tonsillitis) < opens mouth > Doctor (with face of EW) "ah. Ok. Yes. Well. Let's get you some antibiotics"

The whole of my throat fills with pus and then I get oral thrush too, it's lovely HmmGrin

DaveMinion · 16/09/2021 20:05

@HermioneKipper

It’s not tonsillitis yet and I’m praying it won’t turn into it *@frazzledasarock* as that will lay me up for days.

The GP is so tight with antibiotics my last bout of antibiotics nearly turned into quinsy

I wish they’d rip the buggers out with a rusty spoon but they said I have to get it 8 times in a year for them to do that!

That's Bullshit! I was always told 6 times a year and only got up to 5. Got to a point where I was waking up gasping for breathe.

I work in theatres and asked my ent colleague to look saying they were massive. He gave me a look like yeah right sure. Then look and said my god they are. Ask your gp to refer you. He told me at my appointment the figure is gatekeeping. If you get tonsillitis that often you should be referred.

I then had to convince my anaesthetist colleague I didn't have sleep apnoea in preassessment so I could go to day surgery and not my department lol. Love my colleagues but no.

Cervicalflop · 16/09/2021 20:07

Strefen lozenges are good. A nd a few sprays of difflam throat spray

MrsHandles · 16/09/2021 20:11

I have no suggestions, however I am DEVASTATED at the loss of my precious Tyrozets! They were the silver bullet for any potential tonsillitis 😭

Roselilly36 · 16/09/2021 20:35

I find Throaties really good if I have a sore throat, cheap £1 or so in Savers, they are like squidgy pastilles.

frazzledasarock · 16/09/2021 20:39

@NotMyCat OMG I thought I was the only one who got oral thrush with tonsillitis, the pus filled throat that feels like I’m swallowing razors and my whole bloody mouth on fire….

It’s been a while since I last had a bout. Thank god.
