To return my foundation

LaVieEstBelle159 · 16/09/2021 18:20

My current Estée Lauder DW is ageing me and so decided to drive 130 mile round trip to Boots in the mall to treat myself to a new more youthful foundation.

Went to Chanel and explained what I didn't want. She tried me with a BB cream (too light) and a Sublimage Le Teint which on first application seemed great.

She gave me all the flattery. I (stupidly) assumed it would cost about £40-£50 and when I paid, it was £105!! For a foundation. I was so shocked, I just paid it.

I feel upset because she actually didn't give me other Chanel foundation options only these - one she knew I wouldn't like and one that was very expensive. I said I didn't want a cakey look and I presumed there were no other options. When I went online later, I saw Chanel sell a few other foundation ranges in the prices I had expected.

The Sublimage is awful, after 2 hours, I look as though I've been frying chips in a sauna and for peri-menopausal, it's not a good look. It also makes my eye and lip makeup disappear and accentuates my pigmentation.

AIBU to take it back and say I was missold? Would really appreciate any comments please.

Were you mid-sold though? It’s up to you to satisfy yourself that a foundation suits your skin type and colouring and it sounds like you bought in a rush and not in the right frame of mind (worried you were looking old).

samwitwicky · 16/09/2021 18:32

Personally, I think YABU. The price shocked you, you shouldn't have bought it.

girlmom21 · 16/09/2021 18:34

If it's not been opened surely you're fine to return it - not sure I'd drive another 130 miles though.

Realistically you should have just checked the price or said 'no thanks' at the checkout.

Cathie102 · 16/09/2021 18:34

Take it back! That’s shocking and it’s awful if it doesn’t work. Next time ask for a sample so you can try it for a few days/

ForeverSinging · 16/09/2021 18:34

You tried it before you agreed to buy it so you don't really have a leg to stand on. If the price bothered you that was the time to speak up.

BakedTattie · 16/09/2021 18:35

When she told you the total at the till why did you just say - no thanks, that’s too expensive, can your show me some other products around £40?

londonrach · 16/09/2021 18:35

Sadly yabu. I've yet to understand why anyone using foundation as everyone looks better without.. you bought it knowing what you looked it. It's an item you can't return ..sorry as said before yabu. Good moisturiser is the way forward...I say that as someone who's not young ....

Comedycook · 16/09/2021 18:35

You drove 130 miles to Boots Shock

ForeverSinging · 16/09/2021 18:35

That is assuming you've opened and used it of course which is how I read your post.

cansu · 16/09/2021 18:37

You tried it on and bought it. You made a bad buy and should have been assertive and told her the price range you were prepared to pay. I get that it can be hard to row back from the hard sell but that is what these counters all do. They also probably assume that anyone turning up to buy Chanel make up has money to burn. FWIW I think you should have gone elsewhere. It is over priced. I bought some lovely Protect and Perfect foundation from Boots for 17.50. o

VHLV · 16/09/2021 18:37

Sorry to hear about your experience. I had a similar experience in the past. Yes, you can return your foundation if it doesn't deliver on the promises. I did. Is it worth the trip though? In the meantime you can get an erborian bb on Amazon for about £15. It's one of the best things available in the Uk.

FelicityPike · 16/09/2021 18:37

You can’t return make up. Can you?

Wole · 16/09/2021 18:38

If it's not opened just take it back and say it didn't wear well.

CorrBlimeyGG · 16/09/2021 18:38

I'm struggling to believe your frying chips in a sauna comparison, what else have you got on your skin?

If you have not opened the product, then return it as a change of mind.

BrilliantBetty · 16/09/2021 18:38

You tried it before you bought it... so how could you have been 'mis sold'. You didn't have to complete the transaction when you saw the price.

Personally I think you would be U to kick up a fuss and point blame at the sales person.
Return it if you haven't opened it. But if you have, tough.

BeaucoupFish · 16/09/2021 18:39

@LaVieEstBelle159

Personally I think she was trying to sell the most expensive one….are sales commission driven do you know ?
If so you may have a problem getting a refund, have you tried contacting Chanel Customer Support ?
Sorry this happened I would expect to look absolutely radiant with a foundation at that price bracket.

Hopdathelf · 16/09/2021 18:39

If it’s barely used maybe someone will buy it from you. Lesson learned for next time: do research online, try it on, live with it for a few hours (or ideally ask for a sample to take away), then purchase.

Wole · 16/09/2021 18:40

Try tweeting boots first to see if this is something they'd accept? If not then sell it on ebay.

Nosilayak · 16/09/2021 18:40

I'd take it back. You asked for her advice and she was wrong to not show you all the available options in the full price range. Tell her you've looked online and are very disappointed you were only shown two options out of the full range. Also, this time can you ask to have a little sample before you make the final decision, then go round the shops or for lunch etc to kill some time and then see how it looks after a couple of hours and if you still like it, before actually buying. Can you email or ring the shop first and discuss it with them before you make another long journey? If she is unhelpful then ring Chanel Customer care and see what they suggest.

If you are going to drive 260 mile round trip wouldn’t you do some research first?

pelosi · 16/09/2021 18:45

Tell them you had an allergic reaction.

£105 is insane!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 16/09/2021 18:46

I’ve returned a foundation to Chanel before. It oxidised after a couple of hours and made me look like a clementine in a wig. They took it back no problem.

Lesson learned for me. I only buy a foundation now if they’ll dole me out a wee sample pot with enough for a couple of days worth in.

stripedbananas · 16/09/2021 18:49

Don't be such a walk over next time.

Most people say 'lovely thank you very much, I'm just going to look at a few more products (from other brands) to work out what suits me best'. Smile and move on.

And yes do more research online next time.

And understand that the sales people fully expect you to meander around looking at everything on offer.

Don't open the packaging and go back to return it. I would. I'd be really annoyed at myself, and her, and I'd return it.

BlueBloodedBlue · 16/09/2021 18:51

I took a Chanel lipstick back because it made my lips flakey and sore. They refunded no question as apparently if you have any form of an allergic reaction to make up, they have a duty to refund no questions asked.
