To return my foundation

LaVieEstBelle159 · 16/09/2021 18:20

My current Estée Lauder DW is ageing me and so decided to drive 130 mile round trip to Boots in the mall to treat myself to a new more youthful foundation.

Went to Chanel and explained what I didn't want. She tried me with a BB cream (too light) and a Sublimage Le Teint which on first application seemed great.

She gave me all the flattery. I (stupidly) assumed it would cost about £40-£50 and when I paid, it was £105!! For a foundation. I was so shocked, I just paid it.

I feel upset because she actually didn't give me other Chanel foundation options only these - one she knew I wouldn't like and one that was very expensive. I said I didn't want a cakey look and I presumed there were no other options. When I went online later, I saw Chanel sell a few other foundation ranges in the prices I had expected.

The Sublimage is awful, after 2 hours, I look as though I've been frying chips in a sauna and for peri-menopausal, it's not a good look. It also makes my eye and lip makeup disappear and accentuates my pigmentation.

AIBU to take it back and say I was missold? Would really appreciate any comments please.

WTAF am I reading.
Isn't there a S&B topic?

LaVieEstBelle159 · 16/09/2021 19:51

@MsHedgehog I tried a light dusting of banana baking powder with a brush but will try with a blending sponge tomorrow morning.

@LaVieEstBelle159

I've already opened it and tried it for two days. It makes my face look very greasy and shiny as apparently it's suitable for dry skin (which I don't have).

I should have been stronger, I realise that now. I got a bit swept away as she was so friendly! I'm so bloody gullible and annoyed with myself!

Someone will buy it off you on ebay. You won't get the full price but worth a try if Boots won't take it back.
Booknooks · 16/09/2021 19:58

I doubt boots will take it back if its been used, but as has been said, can properly recoup a fair amount of the cost back somewhere like ebay, there is a market for it. Or maybe try and find some YT tutorials about how to use it best.

earthyfire · 16/09/2021 19:58

I am never shy is saying no thanks!

Antinerak · 16/09/2021 20:00

Try with a freshly washed beauty sponge and 'bake' with powder under eyes and on T zone. If that doesn't work, you may be able to use it as a concealer or mix with moisturiser for a lighter BB cream sort of thing

Beautiful3 · 16/09/2021 20:04

I returned chanel foundation a few days after I used it, because it made me break out. They gave me a refund, no problem. Just tell them you had an allergic reaction to it.

user1497787065 · 16/09/2021 20:11

Not quite what you are asking but Double Wear is all about what is underneath it. It is a matte foundation. But with a good skincare regime and a primer it looks glowing and it lasts.

Always on MN it is described as cakey but no other foundation lasts like it. Anything described as dewy, moisturising will give the chip frying sauna effect unless heavily powdered

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/09/2021 20:15

I would and have retuned foundation that didn’t work for me. It’s not in Chanel’s interests to have people going around looking/feeling shit in their products, or telling people they are no use. To me it’s much the same as going back to the hairdresser and saying you are unhappy with a cut.

isthismylifenow · 16/09/2021 20:16

I've returned items that have been opened before. Not Chanel though but other well known brands. I did DM them first though, so perhaps do that before you trek off all the way.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 16/09/2021 20:26

I really wouldn’t even bother trying different techniques to get it to work because if I spent £100 on a foundation I wouldn’t want to have to mess about, I would want to slap it on and feel like goddamn Beyoncé every time I wore it.

It definitely sounds like you’ve been mis sold this foundation. It’s for dry skin and you don’t have dry skin.

I went from ELDW to Fenty Pro Filter soft matte foundation and adore it. Go around to the different booths and ask for samples of the foundations you think will work for you. Never ever buy straight off the bat unless it’s a £10 maybelline job. Foundations are like cars, you have to test drive them.

Regularsizedrudy · 16/09/2021 20:43

Never trust the sales people at makeup counters, especially in boots. they don’t actually give a shit what you are looking for they just say any only shit to get you to buy. If I were you I’d put it on eBay if they won’t take it back.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/09/2021 20:55

Sounds like you’ve been missold. I’d try to take it back. Don’t you have a boots closer?

Murphs1 · 16/09/2021 20:58

I’d take it back and say after researching all of your foundations this is not suitable for my skin and I’d like to exchange. QVC are great for trying new things as if you don’t like it you can return it.

hayley013 · 16/09/2021 21:01

I really like the CC cream, that maybe worth checking out

LaVieEstBelle159 · 16/09/2021 21:15

Thank you for all your comments. I'm going to contact Chanel and Boots tomorrow and see if they'll take it back.

I have a local Boots but the one that has the large makeup counters is 65 miles away.

@Comedycook

You drove 130 miles to Boots Shock
This made me Hmm too. I tend to do a lot of research on face products online first before I delve into purchasing/trying in store. I don't think you can return it OP - in fact, I wouldn't drive 130 more miles to find out that they may decline.
EvenRosesHaveThorns · 16/09/2021 21:40

Your nearest shop is 130 miles away?!

millymoo1202 · 16/09/2021 21:51

I’m pretty sure Boots are doing returns on all make up if colour doesn’t suit etc due to covid but I am in Scotland so might be different

CoolStoryBruh · 16/09/2021 22:03

Christ. I'd absolutely try take it back, it is worth a try. Mental price for foundation.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 16/09/2021 22:13

Message them about returning it or swapping for something more suitable. Tell them it's not a good product and not suitable for your skin.
But I wouldn't claim to have been mis sold. They literally showed you the product. Unless they made any claims that were not true (eg this product is made from real unicorns horn) or didnt point out any risks (eg they know that half of all women with brown hair are allergic to it) then it's not mis selling. Its selling a product that doesnt suit your skin after some use and that isnt good value.
Foundation does change between being put on and after 2 hours wear and there is no way that anyone could know how it was going to look on your skin after a few hours or after you put it on yourself. You should have given it some more time before ordering jt

LaVieEstBelle159 · 16/09/2021 22:19

It's 65 miles away, so 130 round trip to a mall to the large makeup counters in Boots ie Chanel, Dior etc. The Boots in the closer towns and the closest city don't have such extensive makeup counters.

Softfresh · 16/09/2021 22:30

Have you tried DW light? It's less of a cakey texture. I use this with a matt primer and the coverage is really good. You could try and get a sample of DW light matched to your old DW shade the next time you're in boots. A setting powder always helps with the shine so maybe try this with the Channel?

Thunderface · 16/09/2021 22:36

I've returned foundation to Boots twice. It was their own brand both times so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. The first time the sales assistant recommended a product to me and ordered it as they didn't have it in stock. When I tried it at home it was the wrong shade for me and the texture was horrible so I took it back and got a refund. The next time I chose something myself but it was too pale. Weeks later I was browsing when the sales person offered me assistance. I explained that I was looking for a darker shade of a product I bought in error she told me to bring it back and when I did she exchanged it for the correct shade. Excellent service both times.
