spiders are on steroids this year

Went to the loo and turned the light on to see the biggest spider I’ve ever seen in the wild in the U.K. sitting on the toilet sit lid. I yelped ‘Jesus Christ!’ and woke up DH who wasn’t amused.

He went in there to look and also admitted if was massive. He’s Australian for context so he knows a big spider when he sees one.

AIBU to think that with all the rain and tepid weather this year that this spider season is going to be the most horrific ever? I’ve closed all of the windows, am not taking any chances.

YABU for closing the windows - but I agree about the spiders. Massive ones this year.

Anon778833 · 09/09/2021 23:56

Zoflora. Use it to clean the floors and around doors & windows. They don’t like the smell! So you won’t see them as much. Apparently they are always there but they just don’t come out unless it’s their mating season.

GreyhoundG1rl · 09/09/2021 23:57

Jesus, yes! There was one in the bathroom earlier the size of my hand.

plodalong12 · 10/09/2021 00:01

I woke up to one on my pillow directly in my eyeline last week, never leapt so quickly out of bed before in my life.

‘woke up to one on my pillow directly in my eyeline last week, never leapt so quickly out of bed before in my life’

Thats proper horror movie stuff! Can’t wait for mating season to end.

Not in the house, but I counted 10 larger than 10p in the garden this morning.

Excited101 · 10/09/2021 00:06

Omg yes! I’ve had 3 absolute whoppers in my house, now I’m starting to worry when I move things, that one will come charging out! They rear up at you too, and I saw one jump!

Cookingbynumbers · 10/09/2021 00:06

@Itsnotover that’s the best reason I’ve ever heard for using zoflora. Will be cracking it out ASAP. They’re big buggers this year for sure.

Etinox · 10/09/2021 00:06

I was bitten by one as a child. V painful and such a shock. I didn’t realise we had bitey ones here.

MadisonAvenue · 10/09/2021 00:07

I walked past a house earlier and did a double take at the spider on a web on the hedge, it was huge. Not just long legs but it had a large body too. Never seen one that big before.

Burgerqueenbee · 10/09/2021 00:07

DH has just evicted a massive one (and I've always lived in the countryside so I am used to big spiders!) and commented that he thinks they are much bigger than normal too 😖

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/09/2021 00:09

I had a big one in my lounge the other night...

I put him/her outside cos the kids would have gone nuts.

I thought s/he was quite cute though. Definitely seem to be getting bigger

FusciasBright21 · 10/09/2021 00:13

I've only seen one house spider this year (average size) but we have hundreds and hundreds in the garden. I haven't been sitting out cause I'm too uncomfortable. Our raspberries have all gone to waste as I couldn't get to them for bloody spiders Sad

Sparklfairy · 10/09/2021 00:18

I don't mind spiders but not when then catch me off guard and tear towards me Grin I am on a first floor flat so could be safe but maybe not as they've got me here before!

PumpkinsGalore · 10/09/2021 00:26

I'm absolutely PETRIFIED of them and I'm the only adult in the house Confused

I wonder if they get spiders on the higher floors in tower blocks 🤔

Lillipops · 10/09/2021 00:28

No kidding they're massive!! We have a handheld shark hoover think baby shark! DO has been sucking them up but the one last night literally filled the container for the dust 😬 the horror. Never seen anything so big. Currently sweating it out because it's too hot but dare'nt open the windows incase they come in 😬

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 10/09/2021 00:29

The cat eats all spiders before I even see them thank goodness, she is fierce.
My last cat got her jollies splatting them with her big paw so I'd come home to find flattened spiders all over the house.

StormcloakNord · 10/09/2021 00:31

It's so hot here and we've had the windows open all day. I'm honestly fucking terrified to go upstairs I've just got visions of millions of spiders all over the fucking bed 😭

Anon778833 · 10/09/2021 00:33

Yeah it does help to have cats - mine despatched a massive one that was living under our sofa. I have noticed that if you open a window or door that you can see them all stuck in the frame so they must come out of there.

goodwinter · 10/09/2021 00:37

I ran myself a lovely bath yesterday, got in, and THEN saw a fucking huge drowned spider floating about in the bathwater behind me. Really ruined the ambience 😩

raindropsonmywindow · 10/09/2021 00:39

Yes, we've had to evict 3 tonight. DD had one in the bath with her last night, she screamed the house down and refused to go near the bath tonight.
I can deal with your average sized spider, our house backs onto woodland so they're always appearing, but these are huuuge!

LoveFall · 10/09/2021 00:39

DH always tells me to calm down and they are more scared of me. I assure you I am more scared. If they are scared why oh why do they run straight at me, and yes, they do rear up.

TonyThreePies · 10/09/2021 00:45

My flat is a graveyard for bugs this year - moths, grasshoppers and daddyfuckinglonglegs, but thank the lord not may spiders. I hate the fuckers. My friend told me at the weekend she had one that was too big for the glass she put over it. Spiders on steroids

GreyhoundG1rl · 10/09/2021 00:46

DH always tells me to calm down and they are more scared of me.
The big bastard I tried to escort out the window earlier wasn't in the slightest bit afraid of me, I can tell you that.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 10/09/2021 00:56

I haven't seen any yet. Although, now that I've said that, I'm bound to be overrun. Grin
