spiders are on steroids this year

Went to the loo and turned the light on to see the biggest spider I’ve ever seen in the wild in the U.K. sitting on the toilet sit lid. I yelped ‘Jesus Christ!’ and woke up DH who wasn’t amused.

He went in there to look and also admitted if was massive. He’s Australian for context so he knows a big spider when he sees one.

AIBU to think that with all the rain and tepid weather this year that this spider season is going to be the most horrific ever? I’ve closed all of the windows, am not taking any chances.

Yes. One ran at me last night and I was sure it was fucking Aragog. It literally came at me like it wanted to fight!

Notapheasantplucker · 10/09/2021 01:04

I read in the news that the massive spiders are 'sex crazed spiders'!

MyGrassIsBrowner · 10/09/2021 01:09

Had one scuttle across the bedroom floor last night, genuinely thought it was a mouse it was that big. Even DP shit himself and he's usually quite unphased by them. He had to get a Pimms jug to catch it 😆

Milkbottlelegs · 10/09/2021 01:13

It’s the hairy ones with massive eyes that freak me out.

AllesAusLiebe · 10/09/2021 01:18

I can recommend a spray bottle with water and quite a lot of citronella oil. I spray it around the doors and windows and I've only seen one spider (so far!) this season.

SoloISland · 10/09/2021 01:20

@StormcloakNord

It's so hot here and we've had the windows open all day. I'm honestly fucking terrified to go upstairs I've just got visions of millions of spiders all over the fucking bed 😭
Going to tell MY cats about this... And yes, I killed a very large one in my kitchen.. Shudders... Do they hibernate?

When I was a child we had an encyclopaedia and there was a page sized photo in full glorious colour of a bird-. eating spider in the process of devouring a hummingbird... It scarred and scared me for life and I can still see it seventy years later.

alohahae · 10/09/2021 01:21

You're not wrong. I screamed this morning at the top of my lungs as a beast of one ran towards me.
DH looked at me like Hmm as I've never screamed at a spider before. It was HUGE

greenlynx · 10/09/2021 01:24

I clicked that YABU because of closing windows as it’s too warm last few nights.
Our spiders are bigger than last year but tbh I’ve thought it’s the mess and lack of vacuuming.

@plodalong12

I can’t imagine how you’ve survived this. I would probably leave the house and sleep in the car.

FuckingFucksicles · 10/09/2021 01:28

Omg my daughter had a big one run into her cuboard the other night and Im raging (she has alot of shite in there and I thought nah) and NOW another has followed today... so Im going to have to buy a litter picker to fish out and shake every fucking article in there and pray we find them cos I feel time is ticking as they could have mated! I could scream! Mad spider drama I dont need ever!

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 10/09/2021 01:33

Yes a lot of the big uk ones do bite. Not many people know that. Probably just as well. I am shitting myself now.

Notjustanymum · 10/09/2021 10:02

Ours (the normal September striped ones) are quite large - but what I can’t stand are the vast numbers of false widow spiders about this year I normally remove spiders from the house using a glass and some card, but am killing the false widow spiders when I find these, as they give a nasty bite.

Cryalot2 · 10/09/2021 10:14

So we are not the only ones. I am evil I catch them in tissue and flush down the loo. The garden is invaded by horrid slugs , which go the same way as the spiders. I am just afraid of them harming the dog as she is so inquisitive.
Any ideas how to get rid of the slugs in the garden and spiders everywhere?

Tototipple · 10/09/2021 10:18

DD had a massive one on the wall by her bed 2 mornings ago. She has moved into the spare room and is making me get her clothes.

On a positive note, she will now keep her room tidy as I pointed out that piles of clothes and crap on the floor make her room a spider heaven!

Tototipple · 10/09/2021 10:20

And yes we have what seems to be 100’s of the massive ones this year. I’m squashing as quickly as I can but I’ve dispatched 4 already and was only in the house for 45 mins.

Ifyoudontlikeitdosomethingelse · 10/09/2021 10:21

I've had 2 giants in bed with me recently.
The first one I felt crawl across my leg, DH said it was his leg brushing against me, so I ignored it. Then felt it crawl up my back.
It was horrific.
Second one was sitting on my pillow as I turned ove in bed.
Both massive, brown googly eyed monsters!

Had a few crawl across the living room floor too.

Need to move furniture and hoover up more I think.

Horney Bastards!!

Flogert · 10/09/2021 10:25

@Ifyoudontlikeitdosomethingelse oh my god i actually recoiled in horror imagining that. Eurrrrghhhhhhhhh

SingingSands · 10/09/2021 10:28

I was in bed last night and thought I could hear the cat under the bed. Flicked the lamp on to evict her and it was a fucking monster of a spider. It ran out from under the bed, stopped to glare at me and then ran under my desk. I screamed, which woke DH up. Couldn't relax to go back to sleep, eventually put the lamp out and I could hear the bugger tramping about on the carrier/gift bags I keep stashed behind my desk. I have no idea where it is today, I'm working up the nerve to go upstairs armed with the hoover.

Ifyoudontlikeitdosomethingelse · 10/09/2021 10:30

It was horrific! Our bedroom windows are always open and we live in the countryside, our house backs onto fields and a woodland so it's full of creatures. I think they hide in our wardrobe and come out when they're ready for some loving! We also get an enormous amount of flies which probably doesn't help.

I like to think I've had my fill for this year and they will leave me alone now!

ElleStartingOver · 10/09/2021 10:35

Oh don’t this thread is giving me goosebumps.

I am petrified and this is my first spider season living alone. My son found one in his bed this morning, that was fun.

igotdemons · 10/09/2021 10:37

OMG, I’m so glad it’s not just me thinking this, we’ve had 2 of the biggest spiders I’ve ever seen in our house just recently (in the same bloody room, too!). Really freaked me out as I absolutely hate the fuckers. Had a normal sized house spider near the bed last night, had to get DH to deal with it before it ran underneath as there would have been no way I could have slept and we’d have had to pull the bed out and find it (done that before). I’ve been on edge checking when I walk into rooms since seeing the first big fucker, I’ll be even worse now I’ve seen this thread! 🙈😳😮😫

goldierocks · 10/09/2021 10:38

I live in a Victorian house, which used to attract a large number of spiders every year.

I'm now a very happy owner of 5 pet tarantulas - these girls really ARE big spiders.

Strangely since I acquired the first one, 'normal' spiders no longer visit.

I imagine though that having a pet tarantula would be an extreme solution to the challenge of house spiders!!!

MissMaple82 · 10/09/2021 10:46

OK I can handle a pet tarantula, I'm purchasing a pet tarantula today!!!!

BeyondShrinks · 10/09/2021 10:47

I've heard this before, and believe me - I considered it Grin

Tarantulas bother me less than house-spiders, being confined to a tank. I worry about them escaping though, hence why we don't have any. Seriously arachnophobic DW is also okay with tarantulas

We've always joked about our smallest bedroom being spider-proof. Til this year, where DS has had three of the ridiculously huge mofos in the last few weeks (and the first two were killed, so it's not the same one reappearing)

LakieLady · 10/09/2021 10:50

Not only are there more, bigger spiders this year than I've ever seen before, but they seem to be incredibly industrious, too.

I got up for a wee a couple of nights ago, wandered into the bathroom naked and walked through strings of spider web that stretched from the side of the bath to the opposite wall. They weren't there 3-4 hours earlier when I went to bed. And I removed a great cloud of spider web from the little window in the kitchen every day for several days.

They must all be in some sort of productivity scheme imo.

I really feel for arachnophobes and feel very lucky that they don't bother me in the slightest. I actually quite like some of mine, especially the big black one that lives in the corner of the living room and appears just above the picture rail in the early evening.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 10/09/2021 10:52

I've found my people, I'm literally not sleeping because of the spiders. I spotted one that had been hiding from me for days at midnight so I got the hoover out and then put the hoover outside. My neighbours all laughed about that but I was shaking with fear.
