spiders are on steroids this year

Went to the loo and turned the light on to see the biggest spider I’ve ever seen in the wild in the U.K. sitting on the toilet sit lid. I yelped ‘Jesus Christ!’ and woke up DH who wasn’t amused.

He went in there to look and also admitted if was massive. He’s Australian for context so he knows a big spider when he sees one.

AIBU to think that with all the rain and tepid weather this year that this spider season is going to be the most horrific ever? I’ve closed all of the windows, am not taking any chances.

This big spider is above my downstairs loo door.

Jesus, that’s a big ‘un.

Has anyone tried using those electrocuting tennis racquet things on them? I’ve been considering one for the ones I can’t reach…

A big bastard started across the floor as I was sitting reading a magazine. So I dropped Marie-Claire on to it, jumped on the magazine, slipped, fell on my arse and peed on the carpet. But it was worth it.

A couple of years ago in the autumn when I was having a shower, I picked up the shower puff to start washing and a massive house spider dropped out and landed on my arm Envy now I always rinse the puff under the water before using it

I USED to have spiders in the house until about 5 years ago - then I got the cats. Don't think I've seen once since, unless you count the still wriggling legs poking out of Girlcat's mouth (yuk). Shock

HighlandCowbag · 11/09/2021 19:17

Dd caught one in the bathroom the other night, trapped it between a piece of card and a peppa pig tin thing. The fucker must have lifted the tin off and escaped cos it wasn't there the next morning.

It's turned up this afternoon in ds bedroom, size of a fucking hamster. Dh evicted it properly this time. Swear I could hear it pitter pattering down the kalax Envy.

Really, cats eat them?

Even our cellar spiders are massive this year must be all the feasting on the huge house spiders! We have a total beast in the downstairs loo but he’s by the window and hopefully munching on all the big fast ones trying to enter.
I wish I was more tolerant (ie less petrified) of the house spider but they are so bloody fast and the bodies so big, I wish they could all just amble about slowly and decorate the corners like cellar spiders do!

Motherofalittledragon · 11/09/2021 22:43

Yep we've had loads this year and the buggers are huge, I really do hate the fuckers.

Allergictoironing · 12/09/2021 08:44

@GreyhoundG1rl

Dunno about all cats, but Girlcat does, plus small flies, moths etc. Basically anything that scuttles or flies round inside the house. I've seen Boycat chasing things like flies, but his reactions are too slow & he's a bit too clumsy to catch much.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 12/09/2021 08:47

I have only seen two in my house so far and both were smaller than average but I take your words for it!

Animum2 · 12/09/2021 23:02

Not just the spiders, moths are getting bigger as well and they like to divebomb

Barkingdog · 12/09/2021 23:12

I was putting away laundry in DS's room this afternoon when I felt a tickle on my head. Didn't really think about it until I felt it a second time when I put my hand up to my head , went to push away what I thought was hair and an enormous spider dropped down off my head onto the chest of drawers in front of me.

IT WAS ON MY HEAD!! How long had it been there? I've been on edge and jumpy ever since then and keep imagining things are crawling on me. Not sure how I'm going to sleep tonight! Sad

MrsBerthaRochester · 12/09/2021 23:32

We get loads and they don't usually bother me. I tell the kids off if they squash them as they get rid of flies(which I loathe) but a couple of weeks ago I woke up and had that feeling where something was crawling on my shoulder. I thought I was dreaming until I felt a sharp pain. It had bit me!! I jumped up and threw my pj off and ran upstairs crying to my son. I gone right off them now.

WTF475878237NC · 13/09/2021 00:00

The biggest spider I have ever seen in the wild in the UK greeted me on the inside of the bathroom window two nights ago and I thought it was the end times. Nearly dropped the baby.

Pazuzu · 13/09/2021 00:02

Visions of spiders doing 80's WWF promos now. Woooo!

mustlovegin · 13/09/2021 10:31

YANBU OP. I see spiders and cobwebs everywhere this year when out and about. I don't remember seeing so many on previous years

Biting the shoulder that feeds it! When you're the one saying don't squash them. He'll be sorry..,

I often join these threads to make this suggestion.... If you hate the giant House spiders, then consider allowing those spindly, long legged cellsr spiders (Pholcidae) to remain in the house. They are not alarming as tend to move quite slowly and usually stay in one place, but they hunt and eat other spiders! Including any much, much bigger than themselves. It's amazing. It's said that if you gave cellar spiders enough time, they would kill all other spiders in the house. They rock! Halo

LadyHaversham · 13/09/2021 16:50

It isn’t the spiders, it’s the cobwebs!

FourTeaFallOut · 13/09/2021 16:55

A coaster sized spider walked across my bloody pillow as I went to switch the bed side light off last night. A few minutes later and that would have been my face.

stripedbananas · 13/09/2021 17:02

There was one the size of the palm ✋ of my hand last night climbing up the wall.

Never seen DD move so fast.
