To think this comparison is unfair and misleading?

A formula v breastfeeding visual I’ve just seen on fb.
2 rainbow bottles side by side detailing the components of both except on the formula side they’ve not included that formula (always) contains minerals too
Plus there are some things like probiotics, ogliosaccharides and nucleotides that a few also contain.

I feel really bad for anyone seeing this . Yes breastmilk is amazing and I bf my toddler but I KNOW formula contains more than this is indicating and I think it’s unfair it’s being shared on fb and it’s not correct and it going to make people feel bad

This. So if anyone sees it be aware it’s not correct as formula contains more than this is indicating , I’ve seen it on 2 fb groups in the last 24 hours

To think this comparison is unfair and misleading?

Sure you didn’t just want to share here and kick off another debate as you know that’s what’s going to happen…?

MissOrganisedMe · 05/09/2021 08:02

Honestly, I don't get the focus on this from either side. You feed your baby however you feed your baby 🤷🏼‍♀️....

No actually I just don’t want someone , maybe a new parent to see it and feel bad if they are formula feeding ..

Or a mother with pnd to feel guilty or similar

Complaint to the FB then.

Yes that’s true but any information going round should be factually correct.

It’s well know breastmilk contains more than formula but this particular picture is circulating and it’s not correct

I have done

On the page it’s from it’s been mentioned and changed but this incorrect version is still on other groups and being treated as if it’s correct

I just know how hard it can be as a new parent wanting to do your best and this could really upset someone formula feeding

Unfortunately social media is a hotbed of misinformation. It is used to manipulate all sorts of opinions and I sincerely hope more is done than currently to prevent the spread of misinformation.

Knittingupastorm · 05/09/2021 08:06

I think it’s unfair it’s being shared on fb and it’s not correct

It’s a pic being shared on fb, not being accurate is par for the course. Obviously people ideally wouldn’t share things that aren’t true, but equally fb is not where I would go to get any reliable info.

(I have no idea on the composition of formula milk, so don’t know how far from correct this pic is)

I honestly had no intention of starting a debate I just saw it and felt it was misleading and might upset someone

That’s why I’m very careful about what I post online about BF as it’s a very sensitive topic for many, but that could be a post that is 100% factually accurate as well, if this makes a few people try breastfeeding who would otherwise not have I think it has done it’s job.

TBH lack of information is in no way the barrier to breastfeeding uptake in this country. There is a huge amount of info targeted at (and actively given to, including F2F) pregnant women.

The behavioural barriers aren’t in any way linked to lack of knowledge. There are attitude and culture barriers, and there are huge barriers around lack of support.

romdowa · 05/09/2021 08:26

To be honest anyone who takes info from social media needs their head examined. There are so many sources which provide accurate information and are easily found. My friend was like this during her pregnancy and acted like accounts on Instagram where the gospel. If a social media group or account told me the sky was blue, I'd have to look outside and check.

Summersnake · 05/09/2021 08:29

My first child would of starved to death ,had it not been for formula milk.
Had it not been for posters and leaflets screaming breast is best in the doctors and hospital ,I would tried formula earlier than I did..instead of battling on following all advice to breast feed ..while my child lost weight every day the midwife weighed her .
Because I don’t produce milk ..for whatever reason ,my body just doesn’t.but I didn’t know that with my first child .
My next 3 children all had the bottle as well after a shorter time trying to breast feed ,and without loosing a lot of weight .
Mums place enough pressure on ourselves ,without other mums trying to shame them regarding how they feed their child

Breastfeeding has been proven to lower the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, yes
Fernando072020 · 05/09/2021 08:37

So many things regarding bf vs ff makes people feel bad. It's a hyper-sensitive topic. This picture isn't the problem in itself but the whole thing.

I was criticised the other day for "still" breastfeeding my 14 months old and told "i hope you don't turn into one of those mothers who are still feeding at 2 years old". The whole debate is filled with shaming on both sides and we all need to change our attitude to this

Agreed, I’m thinking of women who before pregnancy though that BF was not for them.

Absolutely agree - speaking as one of the ‘those’ mothers.
SweetBabyCheeses99 · 05/09/2021 08:44

It just looks like a picture that someone spent an hour knocking up on Photoshop. Why don’t you just copy it, edit it to add the extra rainbow lines that you think ought to be on the formula side and start sharing it yourself.

Of course most people probably won’t bother to do this, but my point is that it’s just a picture. Anyone can make and share anything!

seaandsandcastles · 05/09/2021 08:44

The thing is, it doesn’t have to be a judgement thing, but people get defensive about not being able to BF and take it as an attack, when the specific benefits of breastfeeding are simply pointed out.

aSofaNearYou · 05/09/2021 08:45

I would think poorly of anyone that would share something such as this preaching on this subject.

EishetChayil · 05/09/2021 08:45

At least they call it breastmilk and not some idiotic wokery like "chestmilk" or "milk from the birthing body", which is the way a lot of breastfeeding groups have gone!
