I know someone who won a million on a scratch card. I think they’ve spent it all though and are now poor. I remember an episode of First Dates and one of the dates bought the other person a scratch card and they won £100k! The camera zoomed in on it and you could see it! I always wondered if the date shared the winnings with the other person?
It was a fake! Her date was not impressed thought it was a horrible trick to do to someone!
Beautifulbutterfly22 · 05/09/2021 13:26

I work in a supermarket and do the cashing up....if you see how many ££££s are spent on scratch cards to how little is paid out you would think again about buying them!

StrongerOrWeaker · 05/09/2021 13:28

It would be interesting if people also included how much they spent on scratch cards over the years to get more perspective.

SingleHandSue · 05/09/2021 13:34

The most I’ve won is £625 when DH and I were young and skint. It paid for a new sofa and armchair!

Also won £500 the day before we were going to the coast for the day. That meant we could book a hotel for the night and made a weekend of it. We gave the kids some money for the arcades and DS2 won £50!

Yeah I saw this! Although, it turned out to be a fake, one you can buy in the internet and give to someone as a prank

@MurielSpriggs

Voice of gloom here.

Another interesting question is how much do you spend on them? A fiver a week is £1,000 after four years!

Oh god no, never that often. Probably three times a year? I won £2, bought £2 worth of scratch cards with my winnings and lost it. Probably won’t buy another for many months, I just sometimes fancy it 🤣

£25 on one and a couple of pounds here and there. I’ve probably spent less than £15 on cards in total though, so I’m not down any money.

stealingbeauty · 05/09/2021 23:51

£0

These thread always have miserable sods going on about scratch cards being a waste of money? So what? Lots of things are! It's a bit of fun, and it sells you a bit of a dream about what you would do if you win. Providing you aren't spending ridiculous amounts of money you can't afford, and you have no addiction issues, what's the problem? I maybe remember to buy a scratchie once a month or so, most I've won is $250. I do know two people who have won big on the lotto though, one was my driving instructor who won 5 million ( I never saw him again! :D), and the other was my best mates next door neighbour who won $13m. Hopefully third time is the charm for me, if I remember to buy a ticket.

EnsignKim · 06/09/2021 00:51

£20

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/09/2021 00:53

The thing is that these long odds things do happen!

At least with scratch cards there is a guaranteed number of big prizes (I was bored at work one night and read the back of all the cards, the best odds are about 1 in 4 for a win and I think there are usually 4 top prizes. dont ask me which one has the best odds, I cant remember) so realistically you are more likely to win big on a random scratch card than you are picking 6 numbers on the lotto.

We have a guy at work who we have put a limit on, if we dont then he will go through a weeks wages on them in under an hour. Whatever he wins he rebuys cards with and then a few more on top. We know he goes somewhere else after he has been to us (he is limited at other shops too so I suspect goes around three or four of an evening) but most people just buy the odd one, I dont see the harm.

£40

We only buy them at center parcs

Darbysmama · 06/09/2021 01:03

My husband won $700 USD on a scratch off ticket. He’s always had good luck (he won $1000 on a radio contest and front row tickets to see Taylor Swift). I’ve never won anything on one. I refuse to buy them. I would rather keep my money when I know I’m just going to lose anyway. Unfortunately friends and family always think scratch off tickets tucked into a card are the best gift ever. I just smile and say thank you and give them to my husband. My husband will pick up a couple every now and then. I think scratch offs are dumb and a waste of money but, hey, he enjoys it and I’m not gonna nag him over a couple of bucks here and there. I get these bath bombs that have jewelry hidden inside so I guess that’s my version of a scratch off ticket. Lol. And if I don’t like the jewelry then at least I had a relaxing bath. Haha.

BritWifeInUSA · 06/09/2021 02:18

delorisvancartier · 06/09/2021 03:06

When I was 17 (many many moons ago!) I won £1000 on a scratch card. I felt like I won, well the lottery & thought I was set for life!! Spent it on a Nokia 3310 & my first holiday abroad with friends. We all were all working all the hours we could to afford our holiday and all of a sudden I had the money the pay my share off, I felt very lucky. I did treat my friends to a night out too. Was such a lovely feeling at the time treating my friends. Happy memories:)

Brusselsprouts21 · 06/09/2021 03:10

£5000. Over 2 years ago. We have a tradition in our house for Christmas we buy scratchcards when we do a shop and then decorate the tree with them. Once kids are in bed we sit and scratch away. Won a few £100 ones and got very lucky with the £5000.

Exactly. I might buy a £1 one every couple of weeks.

I spend absolutely nothing on personal grooming above normal hygiene and basic products.

I waste almost no food. I don't buy endless candles and cushions. I don't buy electrical items unless the old one is broken. We have one TV in the house. I make my own lunch for work most of the time.

Those are just examples of many things that lots of people spend a lot of money on, that I spend very little on, so I'm not particularly concerned about spending £25 a year on scratchcards.

FinallyFluid · 06/09/2021 06:09

I buy a few for DH and DS and I for Christmas Day and Boxing Day, we scratch them between starter and main course and it starts a nice conversation over dinner about what you would spend it on....

Invariably DS wins a whole one pound, Grinwhich I then remember to cash in somewhere around March,Confused if it is only one or two ££'s I will buy him another and he invariably loses on these.

Pottedpalm · 06/09/2021 07:00

I won £30

cricketmum84 · 06/09/2021 07:18

£350 about 15 years ago. My and my sister had bought one each and mine was the big winner so we split it, went clothes shopping and bought proper champagne!

A few months ago I thought I had won £10000 on one! Was just sat there in shock with my heart beating out of my chest!!!

Then realised I had scratched off the wrong box 😢

Okbye · 06/09/2021 07:23

Most I've won on one is £80 - that was over 10 years ago now.

A friend of mine won £7.5k on one which paid for her wedding 😊

FredaFox · 06/09/2021 07:24

£100 twice
Do regularly Win £3-£10 though

FredaFox · 06/09/2021 07:28

Pressed too soon, the owner of my local paper shop says people are buying 4 times as many scratch cards as lottery tickets since lockdown started, he said what he pays out however has halved so there are less winning cards currently as they don't need to give as much away as people are buying them
