Ooni - wood fired or gas?

So torn. Present for DH, I think he would prefer wood fired but there is the convenience of gas.

I read a different thread and a poster mentioned soot and having to clean it out was a pain.

Opinions please! Thank you.

Wood fired is more reliable according to DH. You can also get the Karoo which it wood fired but can be also used with gas if you buy the attachment.
We have the karoo but have only used it with the wood/coal and the pizza have come
out great. You don’t really need to clean it, the fire burns away any residue on the pizza stone you just turn it to the other side everytime you use it.

Snooks1971 · 02/09/2021 20:33

Thanks @iusedtoloveopalfruits1 I saw the Karu multi fuel but it seems that the attachment is out of stock and has been for ages. But then again I guess that you can still use wood pellets in the meantime and so you aren’t losing anything. How many pizza peels do you have? They cost ££ too!

We have the Karu and the gas adjustment. I'd not buy the Karu without it personally.

Blue4YOU · 02/09/2021 20:36

I got my DH a Karu for his 40th. He absolutely loves it and the pizzas are amazing. He hasn’t bought the gas converter but yet. It’s really great having the wood fired taste. Also you don’t need wood pellets- we buy kindling bundles from someone in our village who sells bags for a fiver for the local food bank. Works a treat

We had the same dilemma. Went for gas. So convenient! Friend went for gas and as much as she likes it, says she prefers the gas for convenience, especially for times she's wanting to cater for larger numbers. Either way you'll love it, it's one of the best things I've ever bought!

HorticulturalGraveyard · 02/09/2021 20:47

I have the wood fired Ooni and I absolutely love it. Lights up very easily and I think it gives a more authentic taste that you just don't get with the gas fired. For me, wood fired wins hands down every time and it's no hassle to clean, tip out the cooled ashes and give it a quick wipe with some kitchen roll.

EmmaJR1 · 02/09/2021 20:47

We have the Karu 12 and you can buy a gas converter for it.

We've only used wood pellets so far and it was so good!

Snooks1971 · 02/09/2021 20:49

Thanks all. I have 2 close friends, each of their DHs have one or the other - one with a wood fired and the other gas and each insist theirs is better than the other 😂 although they both agree that the pizzas are bloody amazing despite which oven they are cooked in.

I’ve now got splinters up my arse by sitting in the fence and leaning towards the Karu with the attachment pending.

Ahh that’s interesting - we have tons of kindling…

We have the Uuni 2 ( before they changed the spelling!) It uses wood pellets and is brilliant. You get the authentic wood fired taste that you would lose with gas. We've used it for the last 5 summers and I'd definitely recommend it.

HorticulturalGraveyard · 02/09/2021 20:53

I have 2 peels. I make up the pizzas on the peels so as soon as one pizza is cooked and taken out, I can put the next one straight in. Much easier if you're making multiple pizzas.

Housewife2010 · 02/09/2021 20:54

We've found that two is sufficient. We also bought the fabric pizza oven cover.
Snooks1971 · 02/09/2021 20:54

I’m leaning towards wood….

@Housewife2010 thank you, are they official Ooni ones? The peels I mean 🙂

We have a wood fired one but given a choice I would probably go for one that can convert to gas as well

Runningforcakes · 02/09/2021 20:58

We’ve got gas, friend has wood. Both taste good.
Definitely more faff with the wood

Runningforcakes · 02/09/2021 20:58

One peel.

DeadButDelicious · 02/09/2021 20:59

My BIL has the wood fired one and the pizzas taste amazing.

Get the karu. Charcoal and small bits of wood, not pellets. We don’t feel the need for the gas attachment but you have the option, with the koda you’re stuck with gas (which is cheating).

LockdownCheeseToastie · 02/09/2021 21:05

One wood peel to launch, one metal to turn and retrieve, cheap from amazon/Lidl is fine, don’t bother with the branded ones!

MillyMollyMardy · 02/09/2021 21:06

We've got gas as more consistent temperature and 2 peels.
