Ooni - wood fired or gas?

Snooks1971 · 02/09/2021 20:22

So torn. Present for DH, I think he would prefer wood fired but there is the convenience of gas.

I read a different thread and a poster mentioned soot and having to clean it out was a pain.

Opinions please! Thank you.

We have gas, very easy to use no faff with keeping it lit.

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 02/09/2021 21:08

We have 2 peals! We just got them from amazon, it’s much easier to assemble your pizza on the peal so if you have 2 you can be making one pizza while the other is cooking.

VeganCheesePlease · 02/09/2021 21:09

Wood fired is really good if you're cooking for larger groups on a regular basis, and gas is very handy for making one or two. It's also less fuss and easier to clean. We bought a wood fired one and got a gas attachment (I think. The set up and operation is DH work so I could be wrong there lol but we can definitely do both).

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 02/09/2021 21:11

You can also use one of the big blue ikea bags with some holes cut out for the legs instead of buying the dedicated ooni cover.

glasshalfsomething · 02/09/2021 21:14

We have gas. Definitely east to use and still tastes amazing. Two peels is plenty - we’ve made 15+ pizzas across an afternoon party and it was sufficient as you don’t want them sitting too long before launching.

We tend to use frozen Northern Dough Company and batch freeze tomato base.

We have the Karu and you can set up a notification for the gas burners coming back in stock, I nabbed one a few weeks ago like that. The gas option makes it a lot easier if you’re making them for a bigger group.

justabigdisco · 02/09/2021 21:20

We also have a karu bought for my husbands 40th and haven’t yet bought the gas attachment. To be honest we may not bother. He likes bbqing with proper coal and so the wood is good for him. Agree 2 peels - 1 wooden to build and launch and then metal to retrieve. Love our Ooni

thecognoscenti · 02/09/2021 21:24

Gas for sure!!! We started with wood fired but it's hard work keeping the fire burning consistently. Gas is so, so much easier and less faff.

thecognoscenti · 02/09/2021 21:24

One peel isn't enough - get at least two.

Snooks1971 · 02/09/2021 21:25

I’ve ordered a Karu 12”. 🎉
Decision made thank you everyone and have put my email address in for notifications of the gas adapter thing. Also ordered one Ooni peel (it is his big 50th after all) and then will go to cheaper Amazon subs.
Thanks again. I’m terrible at making decisions these days.
@Housewife2010 thank you, are they official Ooni ones? The peels I mean 🙂
Yes. For my husband's 40th, I bought him the Ooni, two Ooni peels, the Ooni cover and a bag of their wood chips.

Housewife2010 · 02/09/2021 21:30

Both our peels are the metal ones. Make sure you get a big bag of semolina to dust on the peels before placing the pizza on. You can hand stretch the dough, but if you want to roll it out we found an extra long rolling pin from Amazon has been very handy.

Utilityroomenvy · 02/09/2021 21:31

Amazon do fairly inexpensive bamboo peels which are great for launching. We have the Pro, no gas attachment. I just love cooking with wood as it really means you have to get involved with the oven and learn it’s quirks. We have been cooking with Ooni for several years now (ooni 2 at first), and love to cook all sorts in it. If you don’t already have one, get a cast iron pan to fit in the oven. An Ooni cooked steak and gratin is divine. It’s so versatile. We’ve cooked everything from pizza to meat to Mac and cheese in ours!! Also recommend Got2eatpizza YouTube channel or blog for some great tips and cool ideas!

Hmm that’s interesting - we have a couple of redundant cast iron pans (one ridged, the other not) languishing in the garage because they don’t work on our induction hob. Ooh this just gets better!

@Snooks1971

PS how many pizza peels please??
We have three peels 😱
 1. Bamboo for launching (brilliant)
 2. Turning peel (essential)
3 simple metal peel for collecting/slicing (not essential) Bamboo is best for launching compared to metal . We have gas so can’t comment on wood fired but love it.
mrsbyers · 02/09/2021 21:40

Gas

Snooks1971 · 02/09/2021 21:48

Omg launching?? Like a ship?
So assembling the pizza on the peel then launching it on to the stone I imagine. So that’s why you need a couple of peels. Penny is dropping.

Turning peel? Wtf

OP posts:
MrsTumbletap · 02/09/2021 21:52

We have the Ooni gas and have 2 peels.

Had family round the other day and realised we need more peels, so we bought flat baking sheets from Dunelm for launching, so everyone can prepare theirs at the same time. So much quicker!

WeeM · 02/09/2021 21:58

Definitely a wooden peel for launching (with a dusting of semolina flour) and metal for turning. Slides off the wooden one so much easier. There’s a great Facebook group for ooni lovers and I’ve gotten so many good tips from it. We also recently got this for toppings when prepping quite a few:

Housewife2010 · 02/09/2021 22:28

We're really happy with two metal Ooni peels. We can make the pizza on them , launch them, turn them and remove them with no problems. They're still going strong after five years of use.

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 02/09/2021 22:36

There’s a really good facebook page for ooni users called ooni community i think (DH is on it not me) They have loads of helpful tips and tricks to help get you started

uggmum · 02/09/2021 22:38

I would also consider the Gozney Roccbox.

We have it. It cooks fab pizza and we can use gas or wood.

cherish123 · 02/09/2021 22:57

I have the Koda 12 (gas) and I love it. Makes delicious pizzas really easily and hardly uses any gas. Unless you are making huge pizzas, you don't need the 16".
