Tourists exodus today relieved

Well it's over today the tsunami of tourists will be gone.

We have never experienced such, rudeness, aggressive behaviour from them as we have this summer. Our businesses have limped along short staffed, been abused, threatened as have locals. The littering has been something else.

I know everyone has had a bad year but so have the Welsh our lockdowns harder and longer than others.

We still wear masks in shops fgs

So hopefully you all had good holidays but glad of a bit of peace now

I find your post strange and divisive. It’s quite ‘othering’. I don’t think anyone has suggested the Welsh haven’t had a tough time. I don’t think you are that different from any other group of people in Britain. We’ve all struggled in various ways. There is a need to have competitive suffering.

I am sorry you’ve had a difficult time, especially with tourists but I find your post odd.

I went away for a few days and found the shopkeepers and staff to be incredibly rude. I assumed it was because they were pissed off takings were down.

I'm usually super polite to shop staff (I can't work in retail, I don't have the patience). Even I snapped a couple of times on that break.

In my experience, the problem is the people there not the tourists.

Happy to take the tourist dollar though right?

The last person I heard moaning about tourists was a Cornish fisherman in May HT who normally takes people out deep sea diving but couldn't that day due to the weather so took us on a gentle river Fal cruise instead, as I handed him 300 quid.

What other jobs are there for young people in your area, OP?
What other tax revenue is there, economic activity?

Did other years truly feature much more polite tourists, and far less littering by them?

I've taken a decision not to visit the UK tourist places I've been a regular customer of for so long, for a while, seeing as they've made it so clear they don't want us. The steep price increases what levt a sour taste too. I hope you don't regret it when this year's visitors go back to foreign holidays and the old ones don't come back.

This year, I holidayed in beautiful countryside only an hour from home, just off the M25. Not a tourist area, reasonable prices, very welcoming and easy too. It's been a revelation.

Next year I'm heading to Spain for my twice postponed holiday

I agree.

I absolutely don't condone tourist (or any other) rudeness and this year is hard for many people, but the OP's post has a suggestion of 'we want/ need your money, but we want you to go away as quickly as possible (and ideally just send us your money and then don't turn up)'.

We're just not used to knifings, fighting in a pub because one bloody beer has run out. Being physically threatens because you politely point out that an area is for staff only. Leaving awful reviews on Google because they had to wait in a line for a table to be cleaned down even though they were walk ins. Or hurling abuse because there was not a free table or were asked for track and trace details.

The knuckle draggers were out in force this summer. Where do they usually holiday I wonder??

Don’t worry, we will all be spending our money abroad next year. Cheaper, friendlier and with guaranteed weather.

Attitudes like yours OP are why we didn’t bother with an overpriced UK holiday this year. The locals are usually unwelcoming and often come across with an attitude of superiority they seem to think they deserve just because they live in a tourist destination.

If local business are providing crap services, why shouldn’t people complain?

I live in a tourist area and haven’t been to the beach at all the last few months. I’m happy if the tourists mean that local businesses can survive though, but I’ll look forward to going back to a walk along the prom.

I agree about the price hikes and it’s meant that we haven’t booked any holiday at all. Maybe they’re future proofing, but we won’t be paying inflated prices.

The knuckle draggers were out in force this summer. Where do they usually holiday I wonder?? Not sure I would describe my passengers as knuckledraggers. It is certainly true to say that some people switch off their common sense once they are on holiday though. I work in the travel industry and most of our holiday trade has stayed in the U.K. Frankly I’m very much looking forward to having them back, as I get paid to do my job, and if I’m not working, I am bringing less home in my pay packet. You might be fed up of them, but I will happily take them off your hands if it means my industry is back to normal. One person’s knuckledragger is another person’s paying customer!

I felt this hostility when I popped into a shop in a tourist location this week. There was a big sign in the door saying that they had worked all the way through the pandemic( as though the rest of us haven't) and that they expected their customers to wear masks. They were pretty 'off'but very happy to take my money.

It's been a particularly intense summer this year - my friends with hospitality businesses have had to deal with rudeness, insults, anti social behaviour, dangerous parking, arson, unpaid bills, litter, violence & even death threats.
I too am relieved things will quieten down & look forward to next year when hopefully many people go abroad & our regular visitors don't have their visits ruined & our young people don't have a traumatic experience of summer jobs.

I am Welsh and agree this post is a bit divisive. The lockdowns were no harder than elsewhere. Certain parts of Wales needs tourists. Better the industry survives than falls apart.
