Tourists exodus today relieved

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 09:16

Well it's over today the tsunami of tourists will be gone.

We have never experienced such, rudeness, aggressive behaviour from them as we have this summer. Our businesses have limped along short staffed, been abused, threatened as have locals. The littering has been something else.

I know everyone has had a bad year but so have the Welsh our lockdowns harder and longer than others.

We still wear masks in shops fgs

So hopefully you all had good holidays but glad of a bit of peace now

Ayyyy?

LagneyandCasey · 30/08/2021 09:40

It's unclear if you just a local or if you work in the tourist industry, op.

Hospitality isn't exactly renowned for dealing with polite customers 100% of the time. Maybe think about changing career.

If you're living in a tourist hotspot maybe think about moving.

OlympicProcrastinator · 30/08/2021 09:41

It's ok to treat people like this because you're on holiday? Vile

That’s not what people are saying though is it? What’s vile is people’s attitudes to all British tourists because of a few bad apples. Like PP who paid £300 to a bloke who was bitching about all the tourists.

ExtraOnions · 30/08/2021 09:42

I guess the “knuckle draggers” normally go to Blackpool, or maybe Benidorm … rather that your precious establishment. I’m sure next year the middle classes will come rolling back in, and you can get back to normal.
You are describing 3 unpleasant incidents amongst thousands of tourists … and maybe they were right to leave a negative review, who knows none of us where there .
I think the attitude of some people towards tourists, who rely on tourists to make money, quite frankly stinks.
If your attitude in your business, is the same as your attitude on this thread, I’m not surprised people complsined.

Neverrains · 30/08/2021 09:42

I hate this sort of post. I like supporting U.K. business, but when you read how unwelcome you are after you’ve spent £1000’s in their local area it stings a bit. Especially when you know prices have been hiked so high this year.
Sorry you’ve had some people behave badly this year OP.

Knittingupastorm · 30/08/2021 09:43

@changingstages

These threads ALWAYS go like this. So all of you jumping in to say 'happy to take the tourist dollar, eh'? think this sounds like reasonable behaviour? It's ok to treat people like this because you're on holiday? Vile.
Of course not, however the complaint shouldn’t be with tourists as a whole, but with the specific people whose behaviour is unacceptable. For example, the PP up thread who said “tourists do my nut in”, that’s a bizarre opinion to hold because presumably at times that PP is a tourist themselves and when they are, I assume they don’t behave awfully.
CampaignToo · 30/08/2021 09:43

Don't worry, the "knuckledraggers" will be glad not to be ripped off for a second rate holiday once they can go abroad again.

At least part of the problem will have been fueled by a feeling that they'd paid so much for their holiday and they expected service etc to be better, more like what they're used to in countries that understand service. Of course there's no excuse for being rude or violent, but if you're going to charge a premium price you need to offer premium service or there will be complaints.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 30/08/2021 09:44

Paying money in exchange for goods or services is an equal contract.
Businesses shouldn't have to kowtow to customers & have a reasonable expectation of respectful treatment, and vice versa.
I've seen more instances of entitled & rude behaviour this summer than ever before & frankly it's shameful & I bet the Mediterranean resort staff & businesses breathe a sigh of relief when the Brits leave too.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/08/2021 09:44

The problem isn't 'tourists' - it's underinvestment in Wales and the South West meaning the pandemic is MUCH more of a threat to them

There are too few hospitals/doctors/nurses etc and a much greater elderly population

Add to that fucking Brexit and less European money and fewer staff - the whole thing is fucked

And a further problem is that it's of course expensive - ONLY in comparison to a £30 flight to Majorca etc - so people feel gibbed/ripped off wherever they go

OlympicProcrastinator · 30/08/2021 09:44

Ahh Benidorm. Where us working class people can go for our all inclusive without being abused by the sanctimonious ‘better than thou’ crew. Can’t wait!

gingertomfromnextdoor · 30/08/2021 09:44

I live in a tourist area, it’s been very busy this summer which is great for our local economy, but I’ll be glad to be able to get a parking space at the beach again!

MrsRobbieHart · 30/08/2021 09:45

Our businesses have limped along short staffed

Imagine how your businesses would do if the tourists never came.

Doubledenimrock · 30/08/2021 09:46

I am interested to hear that people have experienced poor customer service in Wales. I have come back from Scotland and found some of the attitudes from those working in the hospitality industry to be icy and far from welcoming. Plus food prices astronomical! I've holidayed twice before in that beautiful country and was shocked be the change. Wales must be similar sadly. Still loved my holiday though Scotland is gorgeous.

watchingthedetectives · 30/08/2021 09:47

These threads are so deeply tedious
Of course no should be fighting/littering/being rude anywhere but the majority of people are not and are happy to spend money on holiday (even on complete tat) boosting the local economy.
Maybe time to stop mithering on and realise that pretty much everyone has had a bad time with Covid

Mooloolabababy · 30/08/2021 09:47

Wow, talk about bite the hand that feeds you and tarring everyone with the same brush!!
Fucking rude op!
We spent a week down in Cornwall these summer holidays, yes it was unbelievably busy, we would have chosen to go another time but I work in a school so not an option. I was always, always polite, even though we had to wait and queue for ages to do anything and even though we were also paying way more for things that we would usually down there (£8 to park in a field, when it was £4, 3 years ago).
I'm sure your post would be different if the tourists all decided to go elsewhere!

FTEngineerM · 30/08/2021 09:48

Aren’t there arseholes everywhere though? So it’s no more ‘right’ to write a thread about how awful some of the staff were; they’re both valid.

Summerbreeze4 · 30/08/2021 09:49

Wales relies on tourism and the extra tourists this year will have given the economy a much needed boost. With the poor weather this summer though .I would anticipate next year more people then ever will head abroad.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 30/08/2021 09:49

For example, the PP up thread who said “tourists do my nut in”, that’s a bizarre opinion to hold because presumably at times that PP is a tourist themselves and when they are, I assume they don’t behave awfully

Exactly!

KatherineJaneway · 30/08/2021 09:49

Where are you in the UK OP?

I've been away in the UK this year albeit staying with family but I don't recognise your description from what my friends and family have told me or what I've experienced.

BaoWow · 30/08/2021 09:50

I’m not British and don’t live in the UK. I normally holiday there though.

After this thread and so many similar on MN, I think it’s very clear that UK tourist areas don’t actually want tourists, and a lot of businesses don’t have the skills or training to be able to deal with it.

It has completely made me reconsider future holiday destinations.

CatMandarin · 30/08/2021 09:50

You do realise some Welsh people are rude and aggressive too. And some people from across the border are lovely. Mind boggling isn't it when you like to characterise people entirely on their nationality. It's called xenophobia

Neverrains · 30/08/2021 09:50

It actually makes me sad to read things like this. Like we’re not welcome anywhere, despite being perfectly polite and well behaved! Seems we just get lumped in with those who behave badly.

ANutAsBigAsABoulder · 30/08/2021 09:51

We noticed a definite change in the type of people who were staying and day tripping at the place we returned to for a stay this summer - and it wasn’t positive. Argumentative, sweary and inconsiderate people who created an atmosphere in the queues at the small shops; got the hump about chips/coffee/ice cream taking time to make/serve; behaved selfishly and thoughtlessly on the beach and parks.

I don’t know if it was just people re-emerging from lockdown and being on their last nerve, just being unpleasant, or a combination of both. Whatever it was, it was obvious and marked, so I can kind of understand what OP might be getting at.

Macncheeseballs · 30/08/2021 09:52

So all tourists are rude? That's a form of bigotry and very narrow mind set. Surely we are all tourists unless you tourist haters never visit anywhere yourselves?

KatherineJaneway · 30/08/2021 09:53

Oops, sorry I just realised you said Wales Blush
