The bloke with the animal shelter in Kabul.

Refusing to leave unless he can take ALL of his 60 odd staff and ALL of his 200+ cats and dogs with him. Hmm Expecting the government to make special rules for him and his friends.

Getting people out - understandable. The Taliban aren't going to look kindly on people who have translated for the military, or "collaborated" in other ways. But staff at an animal shelter?

And as for the refusing to leave without the animals and making this all out to be the UK government's fault? For not falling over themselves to arrange transport for a bunch of ownerless animals nobody wants when there are human beings in fear of their lives?

What is this guy playing at?

More pertinent is flight 102 at Bagram in 2013. The flight was evacuating NZ forces.

Thank you, yes, I think that video says everything better than I could in words.

SueSaid · 25/08/2021 21:07

'suppose I mainly feel sad to see the publicity that this is getting - that of all the desperately sad stories of people at risk, this is the one which the media has picked up and run with and which British people seem to be getting behind (just judging from the level of updates/shares I'm seeing on my social media). '

Yes, sadly people seem swept up in the excitement and drama of this ex marine and his cats and dogs. It's shocking it really is.

'I'm fairly confident that those children that this happened to were reunited with parents and not just sent off to a new life alone. I might be wrong, but I don't think I am'

You're 'fairly confident'. You have no idea.

EvilPea · 25/08/2021 21:07

It’s just all so fucking wrong isn’t it

Not the rights or wrongs of the animals getting out. Not that. The whole fucking thing.
It’s like the taliban have just been handed the country and are legitimised as the leaders.

notimagain · 25/08/2021 21:08

Pertinent maybe but for context to avoid some concern as I recall that accident the conclusion was that it was weight shift caused by umpteen tonnes of improperly restrained armored fighting vehicles braking free.

I think it we get to the stage of passengers in holds then as NiceGerbil has pointed here are anchoring points dotted around holds that are usually used to anchor containers and crates…and in any event the forward hold and rear hold are usually separate compartments so people can’t slide all the way from nose to tail…

I’m not saying I’d like to do the flight testing on this idea but it was the only way of getting out of Kabul ATM I’d give it a go, either in the hold or the drivers seat Wink

NiceGerbil · 25/08/2021 21:08

@Handsoffstrikesagain

The babies and children will be looked after in the secure compound and reunited when and where they can be gerbil. Some already have for various reasons.
What secure compound?

In which country?

Reunited how?

If the little ones aren't labelled like Paddington no one will know who they are.

And the babies and children will be kept in secure compounds? Rather than looked after in more humane conditions? You mean USA I think and the places the children in from Mexico have been kept in? The cage things?

Eh???!!!

And how the hell are the parents getting out any time in the near or even medium future?

snowballer · 25/08/2021 21:08

How? It's only in the last couple days.

Google helps.

@NiceGerbil

How are their parents going to get out?

Those who have done this will be at huge risk of execution.

How and when are these lovely reunions going to happen exactly ...?

No, I think some of the children were just given back. One story definitely said a small toddler was treated by medics and returned to the parent.

You may have noticed I said "fairly" and not "totally" and I also said I might be wrong. However I'll repost my quick Google for you here:

One dc reunited so you're presuming they all are, or housed in these secure compounds somewhere until their parents are processed? (if they aren't waiting behind Farthing and his massive pack of animals). Lovely.
snowballer · 25/08/2021 21:15

Nope, I'm assuming nothing.

However I'd love to know how many children have been handed over the wall, as you seem so knowledgeable? Thanks

NiceGerbil · 25/08/2021 21:15

Thanks for the news about the baby.

Got this-

I mean it sounds like a total load of bollocks to me tbh.

Mojo I have no idea how this chap is going to get all these people and animals through.

Why are you so angry by the way @JaniieJones? I think most people's anger at this situation would be better directed at Biden, Trump and his deal, and our government who has left us with 0 global influence. Rather than directing it at someone who's trying to do something small but good.

So odd.

Baluchistan95 · 25/08/2021 21:19

@DogFoodPie

I think as an ex SAS officer he is disgusted by the way the military have been withdrawn and wants to make as much noise as possible about what is happening over there and the plight of those people and animals he knows and feels responsible for. By staying there and making a fuss rather than slinking away and leaving them to their fate he is doing the best he can for them. I'm sure there are a lot of people who would rather he shut up so that they can start turning a blind eye to what is going on.
Ex-Royal Marine. Not sure how you have deduced that he is ex-SAS.
NiceGerbil · 25/08/2021 21:19

I have no idea how anyone thinks that children who have got out and their parents left behind stand any chance of being reunited tbh

The whole point is people can't get out.

With the taleban in control that won't change any time soon

I would also think that the people who went to the airport and didn't get out will be seen as not taleban supporters and won't live long once the planes cameras etc are gone which is soon.

I think some people don't remember what the taleban are like from last time

SueSaid · 25/08/2021 21:21

'Why are you so angry by the way'

Because it is a humanitarian crisis, the taliban are executing people and we have this clown wasting time and using scarce resources and posting constantly media to get dogs and cats out. Too right it makes me angry.

NiceGerbil · 25/08/2021 21:23

But like I said, your anger would be better directed at the governments that created this monumental shit show. You're behaving as though Pen Farthing is going to be solely responsible for thousands of deaths. Your anger is misdirected. The bottom line is Biden has written off, without apparently a second thought, the lives of millions of people. It's utterly monstrous.
