Tonight we were at a mates and 1 of them was going on about how Prince Andrew should be sent to US to answer the charges and it was a disgrace he wasn't.

I responded that that was fair enough but if that was the case America should send the diplomat's wife who killed the boy in the car back to the UK to answer the charges as that too was unfair.

Friend raged at me that my
attitude was disgusting and that I was defending a paedo. Was my point unreasonable?

You weren't defending him though were you?

You were simply pointing out that if we send people over there to face justice, it should work the other way too?

LolaButt · 10/08/2021 23:59

Yanbu to correlate the point that where there is a legal case to answer, one should be compelled to comply with proceedings.

Your friend has conflated the issue and focussed on the criminal act itself, not the procedural issue. Maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Balgoresboy · 11/08/2021 00:00

''You were simply pointing out that if we send people over there to face justice, it should work the other way too?''

exactly but to some that's defending Andrew. Meh this is exactly why I try to I say nothing on sm or at work political and even around friends anymore because people twist your words or want to get offended it seems.

Agree with this
nocoolnamesleft · 11/08/2021 00:02

Sounds like a fair swap. Both of them should face justice.

Hecatestorch · 11/08/2021 00:02

You can't argue with someone who purposely misses the point.

Fwiw I agree that Andrew should go over there. And that woman should be sent here. Both to face justice.

x2boys · 11/08/2021 00:06

I would say PA was more of a sexual predator and maybe a rapist if everything that he is accused of is true as a paedophile is someone who is sexually interested in pre pubescent children

Pucarbuile · 11/08/2021 00:07

Both should face whatever charges they have to answer but one shouldn't be contingent on the other.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 11/08/2021 00:12

I agree with you on both but I dont think it's relevant to each other. Well it is in a simplistic "we give you ours, you give us yours" way not in a justice needs to be served regardless way. I dont think your friend should have raged though.

memberofthewedding · 11/08/2021 00:14

Some people are "in the business of being offended."

Realistically will he ever face charges?
I have seen the interview and he comes across as implausible and arrogant
But hes a member of the British Royal family surely he will be protected by them?

Whatinthelord · 11/08/2021 00:17

People react in a very emotional way to sex crimes, particularly if they involve children.
This is off course understandable, but sometimes people are unable to think logically when it comes to these types of crimes and are determined to see any other toes of thought defensively.

LifesNotEnidBlyton · 11/08/2021 00:19

Your friend doesn't sound too intelligent. Calling PA a "paedo" for example. Even assuming he is guilty of something it isn't paedophilia. But your friend seems to think a person saying something to her/him that isn't "Oh I totally agree and have no thoughts of my own!" is someone who agrees with the crime.

Great news for you doll @Richardjeff

AimingForSerenity · 11/08/2021 00:22

It occurred to me earlier that it would not be a good idea for him to go to the USA as they may not let him return despite their refusing to send back Anne Sacoulas. Sometimes the USA seem to think it should be one rule for them and one rule for everybody else

Cam2020 · 11/08/2021 00:22

I agree. Also, even if he has done what he is accused of having done, that still doesn't make him a paedophile. I dont mean to denegrade the accusation at all, but that's just factually incorrect.

Hecatestorch · 11/08/2021 00:24

I think they are relevant to eachother.

Both accused of commiting crimes in each others countries. Both status as 'immune' is in question. Both have some sort of protection by their respective authorities.

There are alot of similarities in the Position of AS and PA.

While not identical, and one could be sent to face justice and the other not. I can see the comparison.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 11/08/2021 00:42

Your friend is clearly not very bright. I wouldn't worry about it.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 11/08/2021 00:45

Yes, it’s fair swap. Your mate is being a dick.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/08/2021 00:48

YABU @Balgoresboy. Your reply to your friend's reasonable statement was "Whataboutery".Hmm

JaneJeffer · 11/08/2021 01:00

@Richardjeff I hope you'll be more careful where you put your genital part in future.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 11/08/2021 01:01

Yanbu op your friends an idiot.

Fiddliestofsticks · 11/08/2021 01:03

Andrew is being sued privately. He is not being indicted on criminal charges.
Do we really want to go down the route were people are extradited due to private litigation? That could be seriously abused.

Saying that, Andrew should be facing criminal charges but until he is, what grounds are there to extradite? Anne S should have been sent back here long ago.
