Tonight we were at a mates and 1 of them was going on about how Prince Andrew should be sent to US to answer the charges and it was a disgrace he wasn't.

I responded that that was fair enough but if that was the case America should send the diplomat's wife who killed the boy in the car back to the UK to answer the charges as that too was unfair.

Friend raged at me that my
attitude was disgusting and that I was defending a paedo. Was my point unreasonable?

@Hecatestorch

You weren't defending him though were you?

You were simply pointing out that if we send people over there to face justice, it should work the other way too?

Yeah precisely!
Bluntness100 · 11/08/2021 08:08

The word “but” in your sentence does give a slant you think he shouldn’t be extradited, or should only be on the condition others are.

best not to get involved with idiots really

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 11/08/2021 08:13

I wouldn't go to the USA to answer FBI questions. The trouble with countries who don't respect international agreements such as mutual extradition policies, is that you cannot be sure if they will allow him to leave again. Can you imagine the diplomatic shit show if that happened?I expect PA has been advised not to go there for the protection of diplomatic relations.

ancientgran · 11/08/2021 08:21

@a8mint

Prince Andrew has NOT BEEN CHARGED with any offence.
Which is strange isn't it because he's already been found guilty if you read alot of posts on here.
dworky · 11/08/2021 08:43

Whilst I agree Sacoulas should face the charges here, I believe it is wrong to compare the two cases.

Why2why · 11/08/2021 09:01

The OP was not making a legal point about whether or not PA was charged with a crime. She was making a moral argument about fairness. Linking the two alleged crimes is completely unreasonable.

In the OP’s post, I took the trend as saying he should go to the US to answer the FBI questions. The civil case can be conducted in his absence. It’s the FBI that wants to question him in the criminal case.

Prince Andrew will not go the right thing because he knows that the FBI probably has strong evidence against him. They will never release the full extent of the evidence that they have and I suspect they have a lot of ammunition against him and he knows it.

He makes Britain look bad because we will be known the world over as a country that’s protecting a sex offender. He will be seen as a paedophile by some. The Royal Family’s reputation will be damaged for being seen as harbouring a sex offender.

Terrible business all of it.

Yep. Your mates a knob.

Your mates a knob.

Or maybe she's sick of blokes saying, "LOOK over here at this issue" whenever PA is raised as a problem.

The US haven’t reneged on their treaty with us. Diplomatic immunity is respected by that treaty.

Didn't actually address the comment though. Do you whatabout the exploitation of women and girls a lot? Or at all actually.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 11/08/2021 17:51

Diplomatic immunity exists to protect diplomats from unfair persecution when posted in countries with undemocratic regimes. It shouldn't be used to dodge fair and reasonable consequences of bad driving or other poor behaviour. America is abusing the intent of diplomatic immunity by refusing to send AS to the UK. She's not even a diplomat.
Likewise PA is benefiting from the protection of his state. Neither is right but they are comparable in that sense.
As usual, it's normal people who lose.
