...to tell a child to stop playing knock down ginger

Just that really.

Staying in a roadside hotel on the way on holiday, up early and long drive so trying to have a short lie down and knocking on the window. I go to have a look and a small child is there. I said don't do that I was trying to sleep. She blames her sister and then ran off. Just to clarify, I did not shout, I was not angry but I was stern.

Next thing I know I've got the mum knocking on my door shouting at me telling me there just be something wrong with me because they're just kids and I had to right to tell her off. Did I never do that as a kid etc etc. Apparently child was in tears.

Was I just being grumpy and tired or should I really not have said anything?

No you did nothing wrong I would of asked the mother why she wasn't watching her young children!

HelpSendGin · 25/07/2021 17:24

Thanks. I'm now lying here feeling really back but also listening to them outside having a massive conversation about it!

call the hotel manager

KarlUrbansWife · 25/07/2021 17:34

You absolutely did the right thing. She was probably pissed that you ruined her quiet time by sending her child back to her, she was probably bored.
They're probably trying to intimidate you by having a conversation right outside your room. Ignore them.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 25/07/2021 17:35

Kids do silly things like this from time to time because they're children, they don't realise not everyone finds it fun every time. I don't think you overreacted at all, "please stop that" is a perfectly reasonable response and the mother was out of line. If it was my DC I'd have been knocking at your door too but it would be to apologise for them disturbing you/for them to apologise for disturbing you.

girlmom21 · 25/07/2021 17:35

I assumed knock down ginger was a game where they push ginger kids over Grin

Nohomemadecandles · 25/07/2021 17:37

Mother is being an arse. Ignore her.
It's a pain at home but particularly rude in a hotel.

Clymene · 25/07/2021 17:39

Complain to the hotel. I'd be really annoyed

MrsMillhouse · 25/07/2021 17:41

Yabu for calling it knock down ginger. It’s called chap door run away

LawnFever · 25/07/2021 17:41

Yanbu at all but I wonder what version of the story the child told her mum?

Could’ve been ‘that woman shouted at me’ missing out the fact she’d been knocking on your window disturbing you!

LawnFever · 25/07/2021 17:42

@MrsMillhouse

Yabu for calling it knock down ginger. It’s called chap door run away
I’ve never heard that name in my life Grin
DeflatedGinDrinker · 25/07/2021 17:42

Hope you stood your ground with the mum. Yanbu don't feel bad.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 25/07/2021 17:42

Yabu for calling it knock down ginger. It’s called chap door run away

Knocky Nine Doors, surely?

DeflatedGinDrinker · 25/07/2021 17:43

It's called nick knock nanny though.

GreatBritishWineDrinker · 25/07/2021 17:43

Ding dong ditch here!

amillionrosepetals · 25/07/2021 17:44

Well on the rough council estate I grew up on it was called robber's knock.......

ImInStealthMode · 25/07/2021 17:45

Knock and run isn't it?

Anyway OP you are not being UR at all. Who the fuck lets their kids run riot in a hotel / motel?

Quiero · 25/07/2021 17:45

Knocky door neighbour here but no YANBU, the other mother is. With hindsight, it is a ridiculous game, the people on our estate must have been pig sick of us.

DeepfriedPizza · 25/07/2021 17:47

It’s call chappy

StoneofDestiny · 25/07/2021 17:47

Parent is an idiot - she needs to control her kids behaviour.

mbosnz · 25/07/2021 17:49

It's called bugger the hell off you little perisher, where I come from. . . not tolerated in anyway shape or form!

StoneofDestiny · 25/07/2021 17:49

We called it 'chap doors and run away'. PITA it must have been to everybody.

SirenSays · 25/07/2021 17:49

I find you don't have to say anything to get children to stop, just look sternly and slowly shake your head.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 25/07/2021 17:49

Cherry knocking
If I did that as a child I would expect to be told off by the owner of the house, and the next time they saw my mother they would tell her and the telling off from my mother which followed would be even worse!

MrMeSeeks · 25/07/2021 17:50

Call the hotel and complain.
It’s also ding dong ditch or knock knock run
