Staying in a roadside hotel on the way on holiday, up early and long drive so trying to have a short lie down and knocking on the window. I go to have a look and a small child is there. I said don't do that I was trying to sleep. She blames her sister and then ran off. Just to clarify, I did not shout, I was not angry but I was stern.

Next thing I know I've got the mum knocking on my door shouting at me telling me there just be something wrong with me because they're just kids and I had to right to tell her off. Did I never do that as a kid etc etc. Apparently child was in tears.

Was I just being grumpy and tired or should I really not have said anything?

The fun of knock down ginger is running away before you get caught. So the kid knew it was naughty. I am not sure why she complained to her mum. If I had told my mum I would've been in a whole heap of extra trouble!

Get yourself back out there and say that you did play knock down ginger (for that is its proper name!) when you were a kid and if you got caught doing it, you got told off, and if she’s not willing to parent her child, don’t be surprised when another adult steps in and does it for her! Saucy mare.

The whole point of the game is that you get told off if you're caught, surely. Not that an adult opens the door and says"Ahoy there child, what a card you are!"

The mother is off her head and incredibly rude. Nicking in hotel doors is not OK. I hope you explained you were sleeping before continuing a long journey. I'd definitely ask the manager to have a word.

Why not try knowcking on her door in the night and see how she likes it. Run really fast after posting a note saying "It's only a game!"

Knock down ginger here too - and I am actually ginger too so I'd be pretty pissed off if they tried to knock me down as well!

It was always knock down ginger when I was a child.

I can quite believe child cried. It is quiet scary to be told off by an adult who isn't mum or dad.

It was ding dong run away in my childhood. Yes I played it once or twice but I got told off for it by strangers and I stopped. You did nothing wrong OP. It is ridiculous how noone can say anything to children these days unless they are ones own.

Both mother and child would be getting a telling off, if a guest told them that another guest had let her child play this game in our hotel. (And my mother was scary. Well, is. At 83. . .)

Even if you had shouted, as I would have, you would have still been in order. The child was being a nuisance.
