I'd love to get a percentage on how MNers pronounce this name, as I am thinking of using it for our baby daughter. I am especially interested in the pronunciation in the UK.

Yes YABU - Yoona
No YANBU - Oona

Yes

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 25/07/2021 06:47

I think I'd say ooo-nah with a long 'oo' sound.

JoborPlay · 25/07/2021 06:50

Only ever heard oona

JoborPlay · 25/07/2021 06:50

I do know a Yuna but it is spelt Yuna!

Ichoochoochoosethis · 25/07/2021 06:53

I’d probably say ‘Oona’, although I have often heard it pronounced the ‘Yoona’ way too!

cortex10 · 25/07/2021 06:54

Actress Una Stubbs is a 'Yuna'

christdoinghisunspecifiedhobby · 25/07/2021 06:56

OOO nah

Citylady88 · 25/07/2021 06:59

It's an Irish name. It is definitely pronounced Oona although there really should be a fada (accent) over the U. Alternative spellings are Oonagh and Oona. It's fairly common in Ireland although less so amongst young children.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/07/2021 07:05

I pronounce Una as You- na although that's probably because Una Stubbs pronounces it that way.

cariadlet · 25/07/2021 07:07

Never met a Una in real life so Yoona because of Una Stubbs.

LesLavandes · 25/07/2021 07:11

Ooo-nah

fourandnomore · 25/07/2021 07:13

Uma would be oo ma but Una would be Yoo na but only because the only one i know is Stubbs. You can choose what you’d like if you use it Smile

Amdone123 · 25/07/2021 07:16

I was at first glance going to say Oona but no, definitely Youna ( Stubbs again).
And now my head hurts !
What else do you like ?!

ShowMeTheSugar · 25/07/2021 07:20

I know a few people with this name. All are pronounced Ooo-na so that's stuck with me

diamondpony80 · 25/07/2021 07:20

Oona - I’ve known a few of them. Never heard it pronounced any other way.

kezziethegingercat · 25/07/2021 07:21

Oona

ThisIsMyID · 25/07/2021 07:22

I work in France and know little girl whose name is Youna, pronounced as it's written. Otherwise for Una, I've have said it Oona.

Highfive2021 · 25/07/2021 07:23

Ew-na

LittleNinaNanar · 25/07/2021 07:25

It's Irish, there are many people called Una and it is always pronounced Oonah.

Aimee1987 · 25/07/2021 07:26

This. I know a couple that are my mums generation although I feel it may be one that's making a come back. Theres an Una in my sons nursery ( I live in the UK but she has an Irish mum)
Crowtooyo · 25/07/2021 07:28

I've never heard of it sounding like Youna. And I personally think if you name your child Una, the majority will always pronounce it Ooona. Obviously do what you like though!

Dinosaurballoon · 25/07/2021 07:30

I would pronounce una like
Oona.
Until I saw your other thread and this one I genuinely have never ever come across anyone who would pronounce it yoona!! I would honestly say 90%+ in Britain/Ireland would know to pronounce it properly.

CakesOfVersailles · 25/07/2021 07:33

Definitely only heard it oo-nah.

Can't find the clip but it made me think of Stardust with (spoilers) the seven ghost brothers all calling out "Una!" when they spot their sister.

PineapplePatsy · 25/07/2021 07:35

Yoonah like Stubbs

Jizzyjeff · 25/07/2021 07:36

Thanks all

I would have always said its pronounced Oona but as a PP said, I had another thread and loads of people said they'd pronounce it Yoona! I am not keen on Yoona and I'm not really keen on the thought if having to correct people all the time. So I just wanted to get an idea of percentages. So far only 14% would say Yoona. I'm not sure if I've been put off the name completely because of this 🙈

We also love Jasmine and Scarlett
