How do you pronounce the name Una?

I'd love to get a percentage on how MNers pronounce this name, as I am thinking of using it for our baby daughter. I am especially interested in the pronunciation in the UK.

Yes YABU - Yoona
No YANBU - Oona

I have an Irish friend who's Una. It's Oo-na.
It's quite an old-fashioned name for a wee girl.

Igotjelly · 25/07/2021 08:43

I would say Yoona if spelt like that. DD is an Oonagh and I absolutely love it (clearly 😂) only person who has ever struggled to pronounce it is our doctor Hmm

AuntieStella · 25/07/2021 08:43

Yew-na

But know it's often Oooh-na

MindyStClaire · 25/07/2021 08:43

I'm Irish so would say oo-nah, but I have half a feeling it's pronounced you-na in another language. Somewhere in Eastern Europe maybe? Might be making that up but have a feeling I've read it on here before.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/07/2021 08:48

Generation divide here. Anyone 40+ is likely to immediately think of una Stubbs and say “yoona”

RightYesButNo · 25/07/2021 08:49

I think I just saw an American actress (sorry, I really can’t remember which one) named her daughter Oonagh, with a “gh,” maybe within the last week, so I don’t know if it will pick up in popularity over there, or even over here, now.

Nanny67 · 25/07/2021 08:52

My name is Una and I pronounce it YOUNA. Many people pronounce it oona and I hate it.

Geamhradh · 25/07/2021 08:54

As others have said:
Yuna if it's spelled Una
Una if it's spelled Oona.

I know a few of both, and it seems to depend on the spelling.

Jizzyjeff · 25/07/2021 08:56

@Nanny67

My name is Una and I pronounce it YOUNA. Many people pronounce it oona and I hate it.
This is what I want to avoid for my child! I'm glad I asked on here because I really had no idea Yoona was another way of pronouncing it.

We will probably opt for either Jasmine or Scarlett or Amber tbh. Any thoughts on these names??

legalseagull · 25/07/2021 08:58

Oonah. I think most people would recognise that? It's a well know Irish name. I love it. Wish I'd thought of it Grin

GintyMcGinty · 25/07/2021 08:58

Yes

RuthW · 25/07/2021 08:58

Yoona

Puppalicious · 25/07/2021 09:00

if you like it I would still go with it, the comments here don’t seem to reflect the voting! If anyone mispronounces it just correct them once hopefully. I doubt anyone of your daughters generation will be thinking of una Stubbs! Never heard of the Yoona pronunciation before this thread. I think the Una spelling is nicer than Oonagh.

RuthW · 25/07/2021 09:00

@Crowtooyo

I've never heard of it sounding like Youna. And I personally think if you name your child Una, the majority will always pronounce it Ooona. Obviously do what you like though!
I think the opposite. Maybe depends where you live?
SchrodingersImmigrant · 25/07/2021 09:01

Short sound for U at the begining of oona like in fuck. But I look at that anme with central european language. i would name a child that here simply because there are so many optiona how to pronounce it, half will probs get it wrong

Dasher789 · 25/07/2021 09:02

Oona - like Una Healey

Rockbird · 25/07/2021 09:02

Prefer Jasmine out of your other names but Scarlett and Amber are lovely too. You can't lose with any of those.

And Oona here (Irish) but old enough to know Una Stubbs.

RampantIvy · 25/07/2021 09:03

@EmmaGrundyForPM

I pronounce Una as You- na although that's probably because Una Stubbs pronounces it that way.

Saxineno · 25/07/2021 09:04

My Irish family has a Una pronounced oona. On the app so can't vote. Similar to my mum who was ena pronounced eena.

HaveringWavering · 25/07/2021 09:04

Amber just makes me think of travel restrictions at the moment! But that will pass.

MrsMop1964 · 25/07/2021 09:05

I'd also say Yoona as in Stubbs, but maybe you nger people haven't heard of her

Puppalicious · 25/07/2021 09:06

@RuthW , where do you live? Is Una also a Scottish Gaelic name with the Yoona pronunciation? In my mind Yoona is simply wrong as it’s an irish name but I never thought of it being Scottish too.

CoolCatTaco · 25/07/2021 09:08

It's an Irish name and here it's pronounced Oonagh.

Teaandakitkat · 25/07/2021 09:09

I think that Bridget Jones’ Mum’s nosey neighbour was called Una. I always read that as Yoona

"Just stir it Yoona"

So I know 3 Unas, Una Stubbs, the girl I went to school with and the one in Bridget Jones. There all pronounced Yoona. Case closed.
