Appealing a ping?!

mumofblueeyes · 18/07/2021 23:17

Does anyone know if you can 'appeal' a ping? Got the email of doom this evening which states I can come out of isolation on Thursday 22nd. I believe this means I was in contact with a positive person last Sunday (ie. over a week ago). On that Sunday my family and I were holed up in a villa in Mallorca. We did not leave the villa on Saturday, Sunday or until late on Monday. We landed in the UK Tuesday morning and not knowing, have been on general circulation since then (Mallorca was at the time Green, we are double vaxxed, we had a negative fit to fly home and a negative PCR day 2). It seems weird after a sociable 7 days to now stay in for 4 days and very strange that the system has alerted us when we didn't meet a soul that day and knew no-one in Mallorca. Do we just have to accept the isolation or can you appeal?

Delete the app and carry on. You have tested negative so you don’t have covid.

Wibblewobble99 · 19/07/2021 11:42

Wonder if the person you’ve been in contact with became symptomatic on the Sunday that’s why the dates don’t add up? Hope your isolation passes quickly

TakeYourFinalPosition · 19/07/2021 11:46

Move husbands' lunch to the next day? That's not a big ask.

You could also call T&T and see if they'll confirm when/where the contact was.

I hope the week goes quickly for you Flowers

If it’s from the flight, I’d assume all passengers have been informed- if you’re not ignoring the email OP, I would be following up on it as it does sound out of sync timings? May just be a catch all notification, rather than specific to say passengers in next seat to you?

But no, that's not how it works. Only the immediate rows surrounding the person who tested positive are contacted if it's the flight, not the whole flight. I think the number of rows depends on the type of aircraft.

It is a risk with flying right now, although to be fair, I know a decent amount of people who are flying for work and none have been contacted on return yet. It seems to be pot luck, much the same as going out and about.

NCJuly2021 · 19/07/2021 11:51

If you’ve been contacted by test and trace, then someone has given your contact details to say you were nearby. That’s not a case of a mix up, especially if your husband got it too.

I’m confused - in one post you say you miscalculated and said it’s Monday, and in another post you say you were told by T&T it’s Sunday? What were you actually told?

sirfredfredgeorge · 19/07/2021 11:54

What happens with people who only check their email rarely?

Did you have to acknowledge the email?

AllieTM · 19/07/2021 11:56

The system is absolutely flawed partially as it isn’t fit for purpose and partially due to how long it can take to get test results back.

My family were notified by T&T that we had to self isolate (after going to an almost empty cinema!) - we received the notification on day 9 (!) of the isolation period.

We were using lateral flows during that time due to high cases in our area so it doesn’t seem we had it, fortunately.

ITS NOT THE APP

I didn’t acknowledge it I got 2 more, 2 texts and a phone call

Where the rest of your family on the same plane?
If it was from the plane each person should have had their own notification.

It does not work like that! Relative flew in from Italy to do si , all passengers tested preflight, but got contacted midweek from positive test of another passenger. She gave a UK mobile number, her dh an overseas one. He was never contacted though Hmm
Starisnotanumber · 19/07/2021 12:35

So mumofblueeyes has to isolate yet dh the kids and any other relatives in her group on the plane can just go about their business as usual
If that's it then another major flaw in t and t system

mumofblueeyes · 19/07/2021 12:43

Yes, four of us on the plane, two kids, husband and I. I sat with my little one but my husband and teen had completely different seats and sat in different areas of the plane (cheapskates who don't pay for seats and just get allocated them) To clarify, when I logged into the test and trace system it gives me Thur as the end date. Within the email there is advice on how to work out the days. Using this, it takes me to Sunday. We flew Tuesday morning (03.30am). We are now a week on from when we landed, and not knowing we were a potential contact, my husband has been away with some mates, I've been out visiting relatives and friends and now we have all relocated to our little remote caravan for the rest of the summer (teacher) when we got the ping. The caravan is currently sweltering and there are 4 of us here. It is not the best place to be isolating but our home is a 5 hours drive away.

DH and I got the ping, kids haven't.

Interesting that so many people are telling OP to ignore a legally enforcable notification because nobody will check - does that mean I can speed if I'm not near a speed camera or a copper, now?

Sorry OP - risk you take getting on a flight full of recycled air with loads of other people. It's shit (currently isolating after a restaurant-related contact last week) but it's the risk we take at the moment - the more people there are circulating with the virus, the more likely we are to be a contact and therefore spread it ourselves. Get yerself a massive Tesco delivery booked, add some wine on!

therocinante · 19/07/2021 13:28

@simbobs

Completely sympathise with you, OP, but all of this exposes the flaws in the Test & Trace system. You have quite blithely been going about your business with a completely clear conscience, despite the possibility that you may be infectious. For this to work at all the notification has to be much sooner. Isolating for the remainder of the period sounds pretty ineffective. Don't beat yourself up about it there are far more football fans in circulation with a much higher chance of being covid positive.
Search 'wembley variant' on Twitter - staggering how many people are saying them and their entire friend group who were there are testing positive now. Literally hundreds of tweets of people saying they've got it.

Test and trace and the app are 2 different entities. As has been said repeatedly.
TwoLeftElbows · 19/07/2021 13:56

I think you just need to take it on the chin and be glad you've got so few days left. I agree though, the system is simply not fit for purpose.

Yes I expect self isolation after sharing a confined space with 400 people for a couple of hours is very common.

MrsDThomas · 19/07/2021 13:59

This ping business is bollocks.

People saying they’ve been pinged. I doubt all those who says its happened have been done at all. Weather is nice, suits to be at home in the sun. Easy option

mumofblueeyes · 19/07/2021 14:14

I'm not at home. I'm in a sweltering caravan and it's awful. The sweat is running off me. I can see the beach from my window.

careerchangeperhaps · 19/07/2021 14:46

But 10 days counted back from Thursday is Monday, not Sunday 🤷‍♀️

The reason for the delay is probably because the Covid positive person(s) took a while to show symptoms, get tested, notify the airline etc.

covidcorvid · 19/07/2021 14:53

@therocinante

I think some of that stemmed from confusion over the OP where it seemed it had been the app which had "pinged" her and her story seemed to point to an erroneous ping.

Now it's been clarified it wasn't actually a ping but an email and on the day in question she'd been on a plane rather than in a villa in Majorca where she hadn't said she hadn't come into contact with anyone - so I think a lot of people would have answered differently if they'd known this initially.

SRK16 · 19/07/2021 16:25

I’m confused as counting backwards, ten days isolating finishing this Thursday takes you back to Tuesday when you flew? So it likely is the flight surely?

Lokdok · 19/07/2021 16:42

I can’t believe people are telling you to ignore it. I strongly suggest you don’t, not only because that’s the decent thing to do but also because the home office can - and will - check that you’re isolating and you could be fined a lot.

ForeverSausages · 19/07/2021 16:56

If isolation ends at the beginning of Thursday (midnight) then last contact was Sunday. If isolation ends at the end of Thursday (midnight) then last contact was Monday. You're not going crazy OP but T&T are known for getting their dates wrong Smile.

Is there any private garden space around your caravan? You can surely sit outside it as long as you are far enough away from others?
