To ask what your job is if you earn £50k plus

Just that really!

I'm in a job that I fell into many years ago. Its OK but I'm bored. It's a professional job that many people would think earns about twice what it does. I'm on approx 30k (people are always shocked to learn this) and will be forever in this job (no real promotion open to me). Its a sector a LOT of people want to work in and in which some people will work for free. The result is we are actually paid very little - and people outside the sector are always shocked by this.

I'm considering a career change, but have no ideas what to. So if you're earning 50k plus sell me hour career. I have a degree, an MA and I'm sure lots of transferable skills.

Also, I know I'm not likely to walk straight into a 50k job, but would like something where I could work towards this.

£120 K hospital consultant been doing this job 6 years after 6 years under graduate and 14years as a junior doctor (2X mat leave and some partime working).

citycitycity · 14/07/2021 07:37

What type of job are you doing now - numbers based, project based, etc.

honeylulu · 14/07/2021 07:38

I'm a solicitor. £102k plus bonus.

It's actually my second career so I studied/qualified while already working full time as I had a mortgage to pay. It was pretty challenging but possible.

My husband and several friends are accountants earning over 70k.

IT pays quite well too I think.

Ikeameatballs · 14/07/2021 07:39

Another hospital consultant here.

I am Head of internal reporting and integrations.

I don't have a degree. All my knowledge & experience has been on the job. I started in call centres and worked my way up to senior management. Then took a career break as I was getting divorced and moving areas. When going back I made my CV highlight the transferable skills.

The job I am in now actually took a year for me to accept. I turned it down twice because the pay and package, wasn't good enough. It was a big job that involved travel and alot of hours, so it had to be an attractive package. They eventually met my terms. I have been here almost 3 years. The next step is director which I hope to achieve in the next year.

I moved over from the heritage sector, I'm wondering if that's what you're in as it was a very similar landscape that you describe!

countdowntonap · 14/07/2021 07:43

Secondary teacher with responsibilities. Not bad when you consider the holidays too!

SimonJT · 14/07/2021 07:43

I was a chief risk officer, it paid very well, but I didn’t like it so only stuck it out for 18 months.

I’m now back being a senior actuary, still well paid, but a lot less stress. It isn’t an exciting job, but it you have good maths and data handling skills its ideal.

Senior Marketing Management

CrouchEndTiger12 · 14/07/2021 07:44

Solicitor.

It does depend on the area of law you go into though - your earnings.

Corporate = 6 figures as a NQ

Criminal law can be peanuts.

Software and service design and/or software program management. Doing it for 20+ years. Well above 50k on perm basis, above 90k on contract basis.

MaverickDanger · 14/07/2021 07:47

I’ve just moved from a job paying 35k to 63k I’ll be on 50k with my 4 days pw).

I work in workforce management. Only been in the field for 4 years but is a massively growing area so people are willing to pay quite a lot for people with only some experience.

Upupupintheair · 14/07/2021 07:47

I work as a content manager in a FTSE 250 company.

dchange · 14/07/2021 07:49

Senior Consultant here. Six figures. But agree loads of other careers that can pay £50k + bonus. All the best!

GrealishHairband · 14/07/2021 07:50

I’m a decision maker. 60k+ for a 4 day week. Really enjoy it but not sure what comes next as am still relatively young in my career.

Fairyliz · 14/07/2021 07:50

Surely you need people to say where they are working?
Clearly salaries are a lot higher in London than elsewhere in the country.
Where I live you are doing extremely well if you earn above £30k.

SpnBaby1967 · 14/07/2021 07:52

My husband is a senior police officer

I dont earn that, but in my sector in social housing you need to be senior management to get that sort of salary.

Hotcuppatea · 14/07/2021 07:53

Communications for a local authority.

What kind of field do you work in now? If we know your skills set we might be able to come up with some suggestions.
