To ask what your job is if you earn £50k plus

Just that really!

I'm in a job that I fell into many years ago. Its OK but I'm bored. It's a professional job that many people would think earns about twice what it does. I'm on approx 30k (people are always shocked to learn this) and will be forever in this job (no real promotion open to me). Its a sector a LOT of people want to work in and in which some people will work for free. The result is we are actually paid very little - and people outside the sector are always shocked by this.

I'm considering a career change, but have no ideas what to. So if you're earning 50k plus sell me hour career. I have a degree, an MA and I'm sure lots of transferable skills.

I am both a freedom of information officer and a data protection officer for a large organisation.

Self taught, no qualifications I just know my subjects well.

£70k, potential earnings 150k

Musmerian · 14/07/2021 09:06

Teacher although been doing it a long time so it would take you time to get to £50k. Great job.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 14/07/2021 09:06

Writer mix of copywriting and ghostwriting with specialisms in certain sectors.

I'm self-employed so it varies but generally it's equivalent to somewhere between 75k and 90k depending on how much work I take on.

I've been doing it for over 15 years though. And I have a BA in a related subject.

INeedToBuyaZoo · 14/07/2021 09:06

Oh and I’m early 30s, 5 years ago I was on 19k

GnomeDePlume · 14/07/2021 09:06

Accountant but management rather than financial. A lot of my work is to do with the process side of things (implementation and development).

Qualification (CIMA or ACCA) takes a few years and a lot of commitment. In some companies it isnt necessary but IMO that can be limiting. Senior, just sub director level can be on around £80k. I'm at the level below that so on around £60k.

You have to be numerate but not a maths whizz. What you have to be is interested in the story behind the numbers, what drives costs and revenues.

My partner earns £50k as a software tester. Up north. I think developers earn more.

65k + bonus and benefits. Bit of a niche role within real estate.

Kent.

Throwntothewolves · 14/07/2021 09:10

OP most people who earn above 50k have had to train for a long time andor have a lot of experience and responsibility in their job. So if you do find inspiration be prepared to graft to get where you want to be and be realistic that it wont happen overnight. It's harder to retrain as you get older, and if you have family and financial responsibilities meaning you are less flexible than you would otherwise be. Why not build on the skills and experience you have, or use them to change direction rather than starting over, which will likely mean a drop in salary?

TheAirbender · 14/07/2021 09:10

Not me but my husband is a Chartered Surveyor specialising in commercial valuations (hotels, shopping centres etc) and feasibility studies for new developments. It always sounds like such interesting work and I would say it’s somewhat less pressured that other similar level professions eg law, accountancy. He’s currently earning around 200k but based in the Middle East. Would expect to earn maybe 80-100 in the UK (midlands, more if he commutes to London). FWIW I’m a freelance education journalist and usually earn around 45k.

Mumtotwofurbabies · 14/07/2021 09:11

Props manager in large corporate. Earn circa £55k plus bonus. Took me a while to work up to that, 10 + years in same company starting on the grad scheme

whatkatydid2013 · 14/07/2021 09:11

I don’t earn that much but plenty of people I work with are on £50-100k - accountancy & IT roles doing project management. I’m up North so less money goes a long way

Grimacingfrog · 14/07/2021 09:11

@INeedToBuyaZoo out of interest how did you get into that field, did you do some training first and then apply or did you fall into it by starting in a junior role?

luxright · 14/07/2021 09:12

50k basic salary and 25k in bonus - technology sales

DavidTheDog · 14/07/2021 09:12

I was earning this last year. Teacher - head of department in a secondary school.

Mumtotwofurbabies · 14/07/2021 09:13

I’m up north btw

ChequerBoard · 14/07/2021 09:14

I work for a large US software company, in a strategy role as an SME for a specific vertical market. Salary is multiples of £50k plus big bonuses and lots of perks. I am very spoiled by my employer.

In the SE, mostly work form home and have done for several years before Covid. HQ is based in London, used to go down once or twice in a fortnight and stay over - all fully expensed.

My advice would be to find a niche - a specific subject area and make benefit from your expertise, experience and knowledge. You know HE and many industries and selling into this market, can you help with that?

Soaringhigh · 14/07/2021 09:14

Accountant. 10 yrs post qual. >£100k

DoLallyTapMum · 14/07/2021 09:15

Surely some of these figures also matter in relation to where you live and the cost of living there? I don’t earn 50k though I might do if I take on extra responsibilities over the years (teacher) but I live in a nice area outside of the south so I still have a very good (IMO) standard of living in a nice, fairly big house and I’m a lone parent.
