To ask what your job is if you earn £50k plus

Just that really!

I'm in a job that I fell into many years ago. Its OK but I'm bored. It's a professional job that many people would think earns about twice what it does. I'm on approx 30k (people are always shocked to learn this) and will be forever in this job (no real promotion open to me). Its a sector a LOT of people want to work in and in which some people will work for free. The result is we are actually paid very little - and people outside the sector are always shocked by this.

I'm considering a career change, but have no ideas what to. So if you're earning 50k plus sell me hour career. I have a degree, an MA and I'm sure lots of transferable skills.

Administration in local government
Very boring, no career progression
Golden handcuffs as they say.
Would never get this money elsewhere, great holidays and flexibility

PrimeraVez · 14/07/2021 08:52

Head of Strategic Comms for a government entity in the Middle East.

My team comes up with the overall messaging (what do we want to say about ourselves, who do we want to say it to, when and how) and then we work with the PR team, the Marketing team, the Social Media team etc to make it happen.

Skills wise, you need to be a good writer (I don't write that much myself any more, but need to be able to pull a speech out my pocket at short notice if required), some common sense, and be able to think strategically.

Technology - well over £50k, and actually £50k closer to what the more junior people in the team earn. Entry level is £45k or so for new grads

Wrotten · 14/07/2021 08:53

Almost £50K.

Buyer. Bristol.

At the start of 2019 I was earning less than £22K full time. As soon as I qualified my earnings jumped.

100k as a senior software developer.

Muststopeating · 14/07/2021 08:54

Also senior consultant (in Scotland). Salary is 6 figures but I work 3 day weeks so 67k. I have great flexibility and was working from home long before COVID.

If you have great project or change management skills then consultancy can be a logical pivot.

£56k + car + commission (ca £10-20k pa). Sales in HVAC. Engineering degree. It used to be office + field based but now entirely from home. I worked really hard to get here, but now it's quite an easy job.

Social science background, I work with academics in the social sciences on a lot of my projects (they freelance outside HE).

Mykittensmittens · 14/07/2021 08:56

Internet providers and telecoms is a rapidly growing market, most of whom have stay at home roles now.

I earn £60k, I have no degree. I manage client performance. I live quite rurally on the edge of a midlands town, not city.

Lapsidasicle · 14/07/2021 08:56

The training is on the job with scientific background as a minimum.

PinkDaffodil2 · 14/07/2021 08:59

I’m nearly finished with GP training on 30k for 3 days / week, when I qualify will be about 55k for the same 3 days. Husband is a newly qualified solicitor for large London firm on 72k (he trained as an accountant first so took a whole to get there!)

Influencer in the kids/toys niche and I do not show my face on camera.

50K used to be a good month, though covid hit the social media industry hard as well. 2020 was 60K for the entire year, this year it's probably 80-100K.

I think you are coming at this the wrong way @CareerInspirationRequired

Surely you need to talk to someone (career advisor/ career coach) on what you want to do and will be fulfilling rather than pluck a career off a forum because it pays over £50K?

You can also find salaries on websites like Indeed where there are jobs advertised, if you just want to explore what's out there.

I don't see how you will find the info you want here, because salaries depend on

location
experience
qualifications
individual companies

I've never known anyone choose a career based on the minimum salary they want to earn.
