I'm married to ketchup man

Semi light-hearted, first world problem and have name changed 🙄

I married a man who was a self declared 'foodie'. This was great, I like cooking and eating a lot.

Quite a few years in now, it transpires I'm married to ketchup man who slathers it over his food whenever he can. Steak, fancy burgers, anything with potato, nothing is safe from ketchup man. It turns out he didn't do this in the first few years of our relationship as he knew it was a bit odd.

He doesn't understand why I'm irritated by making an effort to cook a nice meal for him only for it to be covered in ketchup (roast potatoes with rosemary got ketchupped tonight).

YABU - it's okay to do this, let the man ketchup a fillet steak without rolling eyes
YANBU - cook him toddler food and don't waste flavour on him

This is as bad as those people who smother their food in salt without even tasting it first.

Bertiebiscuit · 05/07/2021 19:27

I'd love to know what would happen if he spent hours cooking up a gourmet dinner and you slathered it in ketchup? Maybe this is a bigger problem - does he cook? Badly or well? Does his food need ketchup?

Isaidnomorecrisps · 05/07/2021 19:29

So I think it’s fine ! I slather in tartare sauce, mayo. Isn’t the point that the stuff underneath is healthy and nutritious? As long as he’s at the table with me, we’re eating veg and some good protein (and wine….) we could both drizzle anything on it and it’s okay. Crap food plus he’s gone in two minutes and I’m really really mad. Now I’m wondering if I’m wrong!

ALongHardWinter · 05/07/2021 19:30

Nocturnalcat Your post reminded me of my late DM. She had a bit off 'a thing' about gravy. I remember going to an Indian restaurant with her (her first time) and she ordered tandoori chicken. When it arrived,she said it was 'a bit dry' and asked the waiter if she could have some gravy to put on it. Grin

Jengadreads · 05/07/2021 19:32

My 16 yr old son is the same. It’s his choice to continue ruining his food! 😂

EleanorOlephantisjustfine · 05/07/2021 19:43

What he does with his food is none of your business.

Barton10 · 05/07/2021 19:46

My ex would put hot pepper sauce on everything - it drove me mad and is very rude to the person who made the dinner.

Imy06 · 05/07/2021 19:54

It might be weird but I wouldn’t waste my time being offended or irritated by this. He’s still enjoying eating the food so what’s the problem. If he calls himself a foodie laugh it off! Lighten up I think

WB205020 · 05/07/2021 19:55

I’m the same but with mayonnaise I’m ashamed to admit. I love it with anything. Even Chinese and roast dinners! I’m weird I know!

DM does this with chilli or curry sauce to most meals. She also salts and peppers food to death even if it already has both. She basically can’t taste food without it as she has no taste buds due to smoking.

upsideoxide · 05/07/2021 20:28

I would have been seriously annoyed by this when I was younger.

Things could be worse: My best friend married a man who has to have mint sauce with every single meal whether it be Chinese takeaway, pizza, roast beef, chips etc

I am in a relationship with Mayo man! Grin

Every meal my DP has, he slathers bloody Mayo on it 🤢

browneyes77 · 05/07/2021 21:55

@HoneyzAiy

Dh smothers everything in Tabasco and it drives me nuts. Don’t get me wrong, I love a little splash here and there but he literally covers his whole meal in it so it’s all you can taste. I’m just going to make the same thing every night because it all tastes the same to him anyway!
My Dad does this.

When he’s made food for himself and my mom, he’s even put it in the gravy and it’s made my mom ill because she has a hiatus hernia and spicy food flares it up. Drives her up the wall!

Mamanyt · 05/07/2021 23:01

It just isn't worth developing an ulcer over. Fix food that you love, without worrying about what he likes. All he tastes is ketchup, anyway. What's that old song? "You can't please everyone, so you'll have to please yourself!"

thenewduchessofhastings · 05/07/2021 23:08

@ketchupman @Guiltypleasures001

My SIL's DH's brother is the mashup&ketchup it man;he mash's it into disgusting slop then out comes the ketchup;my heart sinks at the thought of extended family meals out that he's included in;at least I have one to thing to thank covid for with not being allowed out/rule of 6;no meals that include him!

Thewarrenerswife · 05/07/2021 23:15

Do not waste energy or good ingredients cooking for this man… turkey twizzlers at best, and a side of beans.

YANBU - I
Don’t let me kids slather ketchup on everything, so I would have something to say if my husband started doing it. It’s childish.

Houseofvelour · 05/07/2021 23:24

@pastabest

Oh this would irritate me.

DH salts everything before tasting it. Then complains it's too salty.

That would infuriate me.
Houseofvelour · 05/07/2021 23:24

@Golden2021

Dh has it on pizza! WTF. At least he's not ruining a gourmet meal though.
I have it with pizza too 😂 I also have Mayo with pizza 😍
ElephantMoth · 05/07/2021 23:25

My ex use to put ketchup on top of gravy on any dinner that needed it.Envy

Houseofvelour · 05/07/2021 23:28

My MIL is Salt Lady and my FIL is Pepper Lad.
It's actually uncomfortable having meals with them as she will genuinely grind salt onto her food for a good 30 seconds (and she wonders why she needs blood pressure tablets 🤔)
He will simultaneously pour mountains of black pepper over his plate.
I just don't get it.

Mincingfuckdragon · 06/07/2021 03:10

But it's not your food or your diet so why the bloody hell do you care?

Because I do 95% of the cooking, am regularly told by friends and family that I am a good cook and like the OP my DH is a self declared 'foodie' - who is picky about what he eats and is relatively demanding about the food I cook (while almost never cooking himself despite request). If he cooked OR if he wasn't demanding about the dishes I cook then I wouldn't care what he dumped all over his food. When he does it to food I have cooked in line with his picky needs it is farking annoying.

Ddot · 06/07/2021 06:36

I dont like salt in my food, exceptions eggs. I get exasperated with people who salt, pepper before tasting. My niece loves ketchup yuck. I make my own ketchup out of tomatoes and chillies it's rather good.

Cocogreen · 06/07/2021 08:57

Well, he's no foodie that's for sure.
It seems strange to me but he's not hurting anyone.
The fact that ketchup is so high in sugar would make me worry a bit because he has it on every meal.

ItsSnowJokes · 06/07/2021 09:06

I must be ketchup woman! I have it on everything including toast. Although I have moved towards chilli jam now a bit so all may not be lost with him.
