I'm married to ketchup man

Semi light-hearted, first world problem and have name changed 🙄

I married a man who was a self declared 'foodie'. This was great, I like cooking and eating a lot.

Quite a few years in now, it transpires I'm married to ketchup man who slathers it over his food whenever he can. Steak, fancy burgers, anything with potato, nothing is safe from ketchup man. It turns out he didn't do this in the first few years of our relationship as he knew it was a bit odd.

He doesn't understand why I'm irritated by making an effort to cook a nice meal for him only for it to be covered in ketchup (roast potatoes with rosemary got ketchupped tonight).

YABU - it's okay to do this, let the man ketchup a fillet steak without rolling eyes
YANBU - cook him toddler food and don't waste flavour on him

A grown up that knows what he likes and doesn't feel the need to conform to arbitrary pretentious rules, fuck me, you need to LTB.

Horehound · 04/07/2021 21:13

Oh god I hate that too. I just find it so...pathetic?! I actually couldn't be with someone like that as it would annoy me so much lol

pastabest · 04/07/2021 21:14

Oh this would irritate me.

DH salts everything before tasting it. Then complains it's too salty.

LCDIT · 04/07/2021 21:14

I cover my food In vinegar. I make no apologies!

Golden2021 · 04/07/2021 21:15

Dh has it on pizza! WTF. At least he's not ruining a gourmet meal though.

TourdeTarte · 04/07/2021 21:15

Argh, my ex used to do this. Sunday roast, curry, jacket potato, risotto. Everything.

ScaredOfDinosaurs · 04/07/2021 21:16

It's weird but honestly, who cares?

Having said that, I would not waste much time cooking nice food for him!

NothingIsWrong · 04/07/2021 21:16

It's chilli sauce here. On everything. Drives me crazy.

WhatTheFlap · 04/07/2021 21:16

I hate ketchup more than anything in the world, it’s gross, so I’m adding in a new option: ban ketchup from the house entirely.

Cavagirl · 04/07/2021 21:16

Does he even try it before he ketchups it???

Get your ducks in a row OP. This is definitely unreasonable behaviour, no court in the land would deny it..

Kanaloa · 04/07/2021 21:19

I mean unless he’s covering your food in ketchup does it matter? I wouldn’t be irritated if I cooked a meal for DH and he used ketchup - the alternative would be him eating a meal he didn’t enjoy.

Lydia777 · 04/07/2021 21:19

I do this except it is garlic mayo. Live and let live!

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/07/2021 21:19

I'm an autocondimentor. No shame.

ketchupman · 04/07/2021 21:20

I feel like I've found some of my people.

I think it's fine knowing what you like but it's not so fine calling yourself a foodie. I'm not sure he'd pass muster on MasterChef with a smear of ketchup on his main course...

And yes to the salt!! Everything gets salted too, without tasting I might add. Perhaps I might need to start salting it first!

I have ketchup with roast dinner and steak.
I'm not changing for anyone.

bigbluecup · 04/07/2021 21:20

#teamketchupman

I too slather it on anything and everything 😋

Guiltypleasures001 · 04/07/2021 21:21

My mums married to mashup man

My dad mashes everything on his plate together in to a big beige mound
Then just shovels it in

on Xmas day etc it's heart breaking to see

Deadleaf29 · 04/07/2021 21:22

What harm is he doing you? He’s not insisting on a special meal or causing you any extra work, so unless he’s causing a scene at restaurants demanding it on his risotto or dim sum then he’s just enjoying his food the way he wants. Good for him.

I’d have said ketchup was entirely within the bounds of normal for a burger or a steak anyway. A roast potato is basically a chip. All normal ketchup foods - he’s hardly putting in on his cornflakes or stirring it into his tea!

ketchupman · 04/07/2021 21:22

Ah mega cross posts, maybe I've got to find my people yet Grin

Yuck. Even reading that makes me feel a bit sick. I wouldn’t be able to sit at a table with him.
BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/07/2021 21:23

Having no taste buds so slathering stuff in ketchup etc is one thing, but to pretend for years first that you are a foodie is quite another! Despicable, quite frankly! It's rude to the chef; always taste first, season extra after.

Frownette · 04/07/2021 21:24

@pastabest my ex did the salt thing.

OP is he actually a good cook? Sounds like you do most of it. Ketchup addiction, hmm

HelloDulling · 04/07/2021 21:24

I can introduce him to The Black Pepper Assassin. No matter the meal, no matter the level of seasoning/spice. Grind grind grind.

tiredanddangerous · 04/07/2021 21:25

I love a condiment and have one with pretty much every meal. I like variety though so it's definitely not ketchup with everything!

SimonJT · 04/07/2021 21:25

I’m a chilli sauce man, unless I’ve cooked it it needs chilli sauce. I only ever ate one meal out that didn’t require an addition of chilli sauce,

Surely ketchup is perfect for steak, burgers and potato things?
