So DH and I like to be nosy at what’s on the housing market.

We keep coming across huge houses like the one linked, massive mansions, pools, 1bedrooms etc, fully furnished, available to RENT for £30,000 a month!

WHO is renting these properties??!!

I assumed they would be marketed for film and tenor something. But no! They are marketed as family homes…with underground parking for ten cars??!!

If you are that wealthy that you can afford £50k for a deposit and £30k per month, surely you’d just buy your own place?!

*10 bedrooms not one, and families not tenors!

One down the road from me is £22k a month and rented by a footballer. I guess it’s a perfect location for him for now, great for family but he’s available to move short notice if needed. It’s a stunning property

A friend is renting a fairly pricey place while her (large but old/dilapidated) house is knocked down and a new house built. They have stacks of money and will be in the rental place at least a year. The rent is a drop in the ocean compared to what they are spending on the build.

Rinoachicken · 03/07/2021 22:11

Oooo yes I hadn’t thought of footballers, some of them could certainly afford it and I could imagine would appreciate the flexibility

I think sometimes they’re rented by people abroad who come over to the U.K. for work contracts, and bring their families. Normally in very high ranking positions where they get a rehoming package as part of their salary, but only stay 1-2 years if that so don’t want to buy property but need a home for themselves and their families during that time.

I used to work in super prime lettings a million years ago.
Footballers, and people who worked for overseas banks doing 12 months in Canary Wharf generally.

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 03/07/2021 22:19

Company renting for high level employee on a contract.

MrsKrystalStubbs · 03/07/2021 22:21

Also people who want to live in the UK but don’t want any UK assets that will affect their tax domicile. Being mega rich is complicated.

LadyRoughDiamond · 03/07/2021 22:22

Russians OP. Russians.

Cocomarine · 03/07/2021 22:28

Definitely the tax domicile issue!

But the richest person I have personally been friends with rented. Not that scale of money, but still a fuckton. Could have bought a place for cash. But:
(a) he simply didn’t want the hassle - he wanted to pick exactly the type of furnished home in just the right area he wanted, and be free to pick up and go whenever.
(b) he was so rich and making so much on his investments, that the “wasted” money was peanuts.
(c) in terms of capital growth, even with the crazy property market he was making a fuckton with his money with other investments. He didn’t need property

AlCalavicci · 03/07/2021 22:29

Good god thats big price tag and you have to pay two council tax bills !

Rinoachicken · 03/07/2021 22:33

I’d be so worried about breaking something expensive or dropping wine on the carpet! But I suppose if you’re that rich you can easily afford to replace it!

Even better, you wouldn’t even have to give a shit about the effort to replace it, or the mental worry of it. You just leave the stained carpet for the landlord to deal with. You don’t have to care about your deposit!
FlyingBattie · 03/07/2021 22:40

The decor in there has made me feel quite poorly!

Jaxhog · 03/07/2021 22:43

I went to primary school just down the road from there! It's a very nice area (completely missing the point).

sempiternal · 03/07/2021 22:44

So many bathrooms!

Raaaaaaarr · 03/07/2021 22:44

I knew a banking family that rented something like this while they renovated their real home. They just have a shit load of money basically and can afford it. Their lifestyle was completely on a another level from your average person right down to the molten brown soap in the toilets and gifts of Gucci handbags and diamond earrings for the nanny.

TheRebelle · 03/07/2021 22:47

I want to know who the landlords are, who can afford to have such an expensive property lying empty and pay the council tax and keep it maintained etc?

Overseas owners, probably. And I guess if you own a home that you can rent for 30k a month, you can afford to have an agency or someone to run the admin for you!

Ofalltheginjoints · 03/07/2021 23:08

The company a family member works for rents a property for staff as a base, not quite the one listed but is about 15k a month for rent.

Company use if for staff and also for entertaining clients

Hallyup6 · 03/07/2021 23:09

I love how the little 'Would you be interested in arranging a viewing for this property?' bubble pops up on the website.

Yeah, like I can afford even a fraction of that.

Madness.

BrieAndChilli · 03/07/2021 23:10

A friend of a friend rents out a house in Cardiff for something like £12k a month and rents it out to actors who are in the area filming. Currently being rented by 2 famous movie actors filming a Netflix series.

FlaminEckVera · 03/07/2021 23:12

I don't get it either @Rinoachicken But it is often people trying to be something they're not, and trying to keep up some 'I am considerably richer than YOW' kind of image..

I know (genuinely know) half a dozen multi millionaires - (self made, and inherited,) and they would never, and I mean NEVER spend this on renting a place. £30,000 a month rent is hilariously ludicrous, and only the 'not hugely intelligent,' or very showy people (with more money than sense,) would pay this ..

Possibly footballers or super models maybe, and oil barons from the middle east, but even then, not long term. You'd have to be some special kind of stupid to pay £30,000 a month RENT long-term, for anywhere.

I think the type that buy Gucci handbags, and diamond earrings for the nanny fall into the last category there... ^
