So DH and I like to be nosy at what’s on the housing market.

We keep coming across huge houses like the one linked, massive mansions, pools, 1bedrooms etc, fully furnished, available to RENT for £30,000 a month!

WHO is renting these properties??!!

I assumed they would be marketed for film and tenor something. But no! They are marketed as family homes…with underground parking for ten cars??!!

If you are that wealthy that you can afford £50k for a deposit and £30k per month, surely you’d just buy your own place?!

Kerry Katona?

WentworthPrison · 04/07/2021 07:15

I don't know but the decorating is awful especially the excessive marble and that purple room.

AppealingPeel · 04/07/2021 08:18

This is why I always giggle when people think it's a 'stealth brag' if anyone mentions a house over 1m. There are plenty of very wealthy families who come on Mumsnet for relo/school advice. Relo agents can be shit especially about schools so they come here and get told they aren't real. It's happened to two of the families at DS's school.

WentworthPrison · 04/07/2021 08:28

it's not the reality for most families though is it AppealingPeel. Most of the families I know are getting by but have to save for anything they need above and beyond their morgage/rent and bills. I'd say that's more the norm.

OnlyMsLonely · 04/07/2021 08:35

No amount of money would inspire me to rent that. It looks positively un-homely #missesthepoint

Tenbob · 04/07/2021 08:39

I work for a big investment firm and quite a few people rented houses like this during lockdown

They didn’t want to give up their London houses, but wanted/needed more space while the gym was shut and they couldn’t go on holiday or go to their second homes

These houses are close enough to London for them to nip back when needed

We also have a lot of Americans that move here for 2 years and the company pays their rent for a while
They love houses like that because it’s much more like what they get in the US
Skinny Chelsea townhouses without air con and parking are alien to them

AppealingPeel · 04/07/2021 08:48

@WentworthPrison No of course it's not the norm but I think people underestimate just how over represented the super wealthy are on here. This is the first stop for expats looking at private schools and then they get drawn into AIBU. Grin

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/07/2021 08:52

In summer anyway, extremely rich families from the oil-state Middle East who are escaping the horrendous heat at home for a while.

Jokie · 04/07/2021 09:03

I know exactly this area. It's normally rented by either "rich expats" (Arabs, russian oligarchs), or occasionally to expat bankers in the city as it's far enough out for their family and good schools are close by. At certain times of the year (Golf season, Windsor horse trials, ascots), these places are bases for visitors.

paintedpanda · 04/07/2021 09:10

That is insane. That costs more than I earn in a year. I don't disagree with wealth but I do disagree with the disparity of it all. There are people who are struggling to pay their council house rent and then there's this Sad

PegasusReturns · 04/07/2021 09:45

When I returned to U.K. for a job my company rented me a house until I got settled. Not quite in the league of the ones posted on this thread, but at £15k probably more than would be spent on a “normal” tenancy.

MarianneUnfaithful · 04/07/2021 10:44

Hideous decor seems to be the norm. I wonder why?

coulditbecominghome · 04/07/2021 10:48

the decor is certainly not my taste but I guess lots of people like that. Rihanna's was nice.

TheGenealogist · 04/07/2021 10:53

A not particularly A-list Hollywooder was filming in Scotland between Christmas and the end of February. She stayed throughout in the most expensive suite at the Balmoral hotel in Edinburgh. A suite there is around £1k a night.

So £30k for an entire house, for a month, is a better choice for your A-lister who wants a bit of privacy.

megletthesecond · 04/07/2021 10:55

I believe that Middle Eastern families head overseas to escape the extreme heat in their summer.

DiscoGlitterBall · 04/07/2021 11:06

There is a house near us that is up for sale for around £30m. Not my taste at all but it appeals to the Chinese, Russians and Arabian states.

They rented it out for around £30k per week (yes per week!) during covid when people wanted to move out of London.

It’s been rented out by actors, musicians and very wealthy families. Sometimes for short holidays others for longer lets.

As I said it isn’t my cup of tea at all but is private and secluded and has lots of facilities on site.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/07/2021 12:21

Famous/ very rich people who are only coming here temporarily I guess.

Or who haven’t yet decided where they wanted to buy a place - like Mr Bingley in Pride and Prejudice Grin

I bet they don’t have trouble getting the landlord out to fix stuff!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/07/2021 12:23

Decor is awful but it would be so nice to have a pool! If someone else looked after it.

TiddyAndFletch · 04/07/2021 12:31

£300k a month rent for that hideous penthouse! If I had £300k I could afford to buy my dream 'forever' home that I've been lusting after on Rightmove ...

AlCalavicci · 04/07/2021 13:46

The outside looks really nice but inside ? I agree with PP the decor inside is not to my taste at all , the cinema room is very odd , why have small 4 screens instead of one big one and the purple paint work looks really patchy !

cafenoirbiscuit · 05/07/2021 08:20

The shiny floors are terrifying. I’d be bound to slip on them, although the kids would enjoy sliding 😀
And don’t even get me started on the maintenance to keep em shiny ☹️ Although I’m sure there would be a team of staff for a house like that.

Zenithbear · 05/07/2021 08:30

Apart from the pool that house is hideous.
My old boss was lent a mansion for free by some friends while they had their massive delapitated barns converted. It took almost two years. Their friends had lots of houses all over the place to live in so it wasn't a big deal for them.
It's another world.
