Which is bigger.

0.6

Or

6.09

6.09

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 03/07/2021 14:06

Think of it as money

£0.60
£6.09

Which would you rather be given Wink

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 03/07/2021 14:06

I tried the money example.

That won't convince him.

OP posts:
Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 03/07/2021 14:07

How old is he?

KatherineOfGaunt · 03/07/2021 14:07

6.09, I would imagine. 0.6 isn't even 1 whole, so how can it be bigger than 6?

(Disclaimer - I'm not a massive Maths person!)

daisypond · 03/07/2021 14:07

6.09

What reason does the person who thinks it’s 0.6 give?

namechange30455 · 03/07/2021 14:07

Did you mean 0.6 vs 0.69? Either way, the second one.

I can't see how anyone could think that 0.6 was bigger than 6.09!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 03/07/2021 14:07

He's 10

OP posts:
TeenMinusTests · 03/07/2021 14:07

6.09

The column to the left is the most significant. It matters more than individual digits.

Would he rather have 0.6 of a chocolate bar or 6.09 chocolate bars?

dementedpixie · 03/07/2021 14:08

Why does he think its bigger? Its less than 1 whereas the other number is larger than 6

goodwinter · 03/07/2021 14:08

@DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou

I tried the money example.

That won't convince him.

Ask your son to mark them on a number line?
VettiyaIruken · 03/07/2021 14:08

How old is he?

Get some sweets.
Cut one in just over half and give it to him.

Eat 6 and a bit yourself.

Smugly

TeenMinusTests · 03/07/2021 14:08

What is the reasoning of whichever one of you thinks 0.6 is bigger than 6.09?

thecapitalsunited · 03/07/2021 14:08

How old is he? Can you get him to explain his reasoning?

VettiyaIruken · 03/07/2021 14:09

X post.

10? Does he have any additional needs? He may need it explaining in a different way.

onthinice · 03/07/2021 14:09

Tell him it's 6 whole ones in 6.09 but not even one whole in the 0.6.

He's must be just looking at the decimals and remembering that the point 6 is worth more than the point zero nine.

HandScreen · 03/07/2021 14:09

You're an adult and you obviously know the answer. Please don't use a Mumsnet thread to shame your son. Instead, spend some time Googling how best to teach children about decimal places. He's a child.

BikeRunSki · 03/07/2021 14:09

0.6 is just over half
6.09 is more than 6 !

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 03/07/2021 14:11

He says
"Because the the tenths is greater than hundredths and the 6.09 is in the hundredths is in the hundredths column and the 0.6 is in the tenths colum."

I'm too shit at maths to understand what this means.

All I know is that it's wrong, whatever he's saying.

Shame my son?!

What the fuck?

He TOLD me to ask.

OP posts:
ginoclocksomewhere · 03/07/2021 14:14

Do you have any change?

Get some money! Show him 60p in coins and £6.09 in coins, it's more visual (if you have the coins handy!)

TeenMinusTests · 03/07/2021 14:14

0.6 is bigger than 0.09
But he has 6.09 so he has 6 in the unit column which is more than the 0 in the units column of 0.6

Tell him to ask his teacher.

dementedpixie · 03/07/2021 14:14

He needs to look at the number before the '.' First though. 0 is less than 6
He's talking about numbers after it

eddiemairswife · 03/07/2021 14:15

He's muddling 'hundreds' and 'hundredths'.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 03/07/2021 14:16

The money analogy isn't working because he thinks he and I are talking about two different things.
But because I don't know how he is being taught, I can't explain the difference.

Every maths working I was taught is so different from the way he is taught.
