She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

A Scottish bloke in a kilt will do that for you for free…

I’ve seen at least 20 cheeks this evening.

@SirVixofVixHall

Have woken up DH laughing too loudly at “the little Duke of Windsor stretching out his hand” As to why he is doing that, he is pleading for someone to take him away from this mawkish spectacle and put him in his proper place outside a shop in 1965, wearing callipers and with a slot in his head for big, round pennies.
Yes!

Statues depicting people who actually existed and were photographed, are Uniformally and universally shite. There is no good statue, especially of women who are always given harsh features.

Maggiesfarm · 04/07/2021 03:24

Apparently people have queued up to see the statue already, some liked and some didn't care for it that much.That's how it goes.

There is something ironic about a statue of the late Princess being erected at a time when statues elsewhere are being torn down. However her statue is in the gardens of what was her home and I can't see anybody wanting to tear it down, even if they could get in easily to do it.

This one of Margaret Thatcher is pretty good

That Mrs T one is an excellent likeness of her.

Cold and unmoving?
SherbrookeFosterer · 04/07/2021 13:12

I think the children are there because she was a nursery school teacher at the Yong England Kindergarten before she married.

I wish the children were more interesting in the Diana sculpture. If I were disappointed in any part of it, it's the hidden child behind & the children's gaze is towards... what? There's no theme to their presence, they look like they'd all like to run off, maybe!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 04/07/2021 15:53

What I would have liked to have seen was some sort of relationship amongst the figures, rather more like this statue created for the Queen's 90th birthday.

The Queen looks warmer and more appealing in her statue than Diana does in hers!

I know it's not the sculptor's fault in the sense that he probably didn't have much artistic freedom but Diana looks like a humourless matron ushering orphans toward the queue for gruel.

flyingspaghettimonster · 04/07/2021 16:08

I think it is a great likeness and a really well made sculpture. The fabric - those pintucks and sleeves! Excellent. I knew who it was immediately.

peaceanddove · 04/07/2021 18:29

The proportions are wrong. Her torso + head look longer than her legs? Also, she was willowy in real life, but her statue looks very thick set and butch.

peaceanddove · 04/07/2021 18:39

@July2mebabywouldJuly2me

The statue “feels calculated to appeal to the lowest common denominator”

Ouch! from the Times reviewer.

It looks worse from this angle with the little Duke of Windsor lookalike stretching out his hand. Why is he doing that?

This rear view makes the boy look like he has a freakish, 4 digit alien talon grabbing Diana's arse. That can't be right, surely?
StartupRepair · 04/07/2021 23:03

I think it is the sculptor's fault, even if the family was giving him mixed messages. Diana was willowy with an aura of lightness and tenderness around children. She was objectively not hard faced and thickset.

Foxhasbigsocks · 04/07/2021 23:19

I think the mix of 80s wardrobe with proportions of adult to child size ratio you would associate with a much older style of statuary is pretty jarring

LittleBearPad · 04/07/2021 23:19

@SherbrookeFosterer

Why don’t they have shoes on then?

It’s far more likely they are there to represent the children’s charities etc she was involved in.

Lemonmelonsun · 04/07/2021 23:20

Out with the out,... Indeed!

It's a tough one when the lady was so so dynamic and beautiful.
She loved dancing, so why not perhaps in dancing mode holding children's hands or twirling a child...

The disparity of her dress and the barefoot child!!

Lemonmelonsun · 04/07/2021 23:24

One would think a few sculptors should be given some ideas and pick the best of five.
Put the rejects elsewhere, High Grove, her family home Althorpe, etc... Maybe even Angola.

But have some competition and choice and not be landed with one awful lumpen mess.
One would have expected this of stout princess Anne..

Coronateachingagain · 04/07/2021 23:29

Agree the little girl looks like an adult. It is obvious so wonder what went on there

Coronateachingagain · 04/07/2021 23:32

There is something wrong with her forehead too, she had a taller forehead or her hair started higher or in a different way,different hair

Lemonmelonsun · 04/07/2021 23:34

I have actually wonder if the little girl isn't Diana herself..

mustlovegin · 05/07/2021 00:18

It's a younger stern Mrs Doubtfire gone brutalist (as a PP poster said)

Her attire doesn't match the kid's. They seem to be in different places

I agree the children should have been the Princes, not randoms
