She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

Yes blaming Harry is rather ridiculous. No one knows except the sculptor why it’s turned out so badly.

GreenCrayon · 03/07/2021 10:59

Is it terrible to think it actually looks better from the back. Still not great but most certainly better than it does from the front.

thebigmove21 · 03/07/2021 11:03

@Clawdy

So we are now getting comments implying it must be Harry's influence that made the statue awful. Couldn't be good old William , or both of them.....just an excuse for more spiteful comments about Harry.
Exactly and more micro aggressions. Harry's influence re including a black child, 'good old William' wouldn't have done that.

I don’t think it’s fair to blame Harry either. They both wanted Diana to be represented as a mother figure as that is his they saw her. It isn’t how the public saw her though. It would have worked if they had put themselves in the sculpture but I can see why they didn’t want that. Random children and an artist that prefers men and that is the sculpture you get.

People are totally batshit.
MarshaBradyo · 03/07/2021 11:40

It’s not so much the content but I think the clash been sculptor natural feel and what the end result is

It could have had children and been quite different in feel

MuckyPlucky · 03/07/2021 11:41

Is it Pierce Brosnan?

Marcipex · 03/07/2021 11:43

The rear view looks awfully as if she is going to throw the children into the lake.

Marcipex · 03/07/2021 11:45

@itsnotmeitsu 🤣 I feel there’s still time to add an albatross.

Mirw · 03/07/2021 13:11

Who cares! She is only important to her immediate family. The rest of us should have moved on by now...

VerticalHorizon · 03/07/2021 13:19

@MuckyPlucky

Is it Pierce Brosnan?
No, I believe it's chiselled stone.
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 03/07/2021 13:25

The sad thing is that a great sculpture can retain relevance and emotional impact even as those who knew the person depicted personally, or who lived at the same time, pass away.

VerticalHorizon · 03/07/2021 13:32

Even the anticipation of the Venus De Milo caused much consternation, but in the end it all turned out to be 'armless.

ShamedBySiri · 03/07/2021 13:33

Can someone explain the albatross to me please. I seem to have missed whatever it was that happened involving an albatross.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/07/2021 13:48

I don't like it, but I didn't hold high hopes to begin with, it's a tricky brief.

Good to know it's all Harry's fault. The Canadian heatwave is Harry's fault too. Him and his wife are awful people at a sculptural and world climate changing, level!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/07/2021 13:48

There ye go

Bit shocked with the sculptor, the statues are out of proportion. The children are adult proportions not children proportions, check out the head sizes between them and Princess Di. Our heads grow very little from babyhood to adulthood, hence a one-year-old has difficulty in reaching the top of their heads. These proportions gradually change as our body size catches up with our head size, this is not so with this statue - hence its wierdness.

Kidsgrownup · 03/07/2021 14:14

@category12

The sculptor, who is very talented, wasn’t getting to work on his preferred subject matter - he is more inspired by the male form according to his website

Yeah, really shows.

Yes. That heavy bust is a bit threatening.
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 03/07/2021 14:47

The proportions of the children is interesting. It so happen that the sculptor was working on a piece depicting Licoricia of Winchester, a medieval woman, around the same time (pic 1 - Licoricia by the same sculptor). He has certainly chosen similar proportions for the child in that work, reflecting the medieval aesthetic, which tended to show babies and children looking like small adults (pic 2 - medieval art).

It’s tempting to wonder whether there was some cross-fertilisation of ideas and if the sculptor hadn’t been in a medieval mindset, the children might have looked different.

Pure speculation on my part, of course. I’d love to ask the sculptor!

This is far far better

The woman is done with grace and form

I really wonder what happened

It works both ways, lots of people blaming William for not being nice enough to Harry, for looking miserable then others blaming Harry for them not liking the statue. Six of one and half a dozen of the other.
ancientgran · 03/07/2021 15:23

If people of Licoricia's time were around they'd probably be complaining that she was taller/shorter/fatter/thinner/better looking/worse looking. We don't know so just accept it.

Maggiesfarm · 03/07/2021 15:25

Both sons would have spoken out if they disliked the statue and it would not now be standing in the gardens of KP.

klfahah · 03/07/2021 19:35

@sirvixofvixHall it reminded me of Michael Jackson as soon as I saw it too🤣.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/07/2021 20:24

We need Jarvis to run about in front of it pretending to flash his bum.
