Gravy AND Tomato sauce on dinner?

Chwaraeteg · 17/06/2021 19:35

Am I alone in thinking this is fucking disgusting and not allowing my children to eat this? My partner seems to think so.

For background, the meal was sausage, mash, peas and gravy. The kids are 7 and 3. and the toddler had a momentary meltdown when I confiscated the sauce. So, was I bu?

I mean, fuck knows because I don’t have kids, but it seems harsh to stop them eating something because you don’t like it. I can imagine they might have wanted to have the ketchup with the sausage. I probably wouldn’t but then I don’t have the palette of a 3 year old.

SticksAndStoned · 17/06/2021 19:39

I like tomato ketchup with cottage pie, which comes with its own gravy.

YABU.

Chwaraeteg · 17/06/2021 19:42

Yeah I can't think of a logical reason why this should be a rule but at the same time ewwwwwwwwwww. I just can't even.

I think my partner is a bit suprised because I'm usually pretty laid back, and don't usually have a lot of rules around food but for some reason this has really got to me!

Are you worried about the salt content of having gravy and ketchup together? Or is it just because you find it a bit grim?

Providing it was just a little dab of ketchup, I couldn't get too worked up about it.

yoyo1234 · 17/06/2021 19:43

As PP said seems harsh to take a food away because you don't like it.

bigbluecup · 17/06/2021 19:44

At first thought it’s disgusting, but as a PP said I also have ketchup with cottage pie, chicken/beef pies which have gravy and it’s tasty and acceptable so...

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 17/06/2021 19:44

YANBU that is fucking disgusting, bit then I have a bit of a phobia of ketchup. I know that sounds ridiculous but I honestly gag at the smell, and the thought of it touching me gives me the boak.

Classica · 17/06/2021 19:46

It sounds rank and bleurgh but if your kids fancy that heady mix why be a buzzkill about it?

Grastenia · 17/06/2021 19:46

Maybe you are caught between those ages where tomato sauce is an encouragement to try different foods and gravy is a graduation. Life is a bit linear is it not? No hard edges at that age, especially with food that's for sure.

Yes you were being unreasonable.

Well obviously you are deselected from this 'jury service' @Iminaglasscaseofemotion Not impartial are thee Grin

Moonshine11 · 17/06/2021 19:48

My DP has brown sauce on top of gravy on a dinner 🤢
But of course I wouldn't stop him 😂😁 they like it just let them

Marmite27 · 17/06/2021 19:48

I used to like Yorkshire puddings with gravy and ketchup. I wouldn’t be able to get worked up about this.

Just because you don’t like it, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t. I’m working very hard on table manners with my two. Thinks like not commenting on other peoples plates, putting things they don’t like to one side with no fuss etc.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 17/06/2021 19:48

I think it's disgusting along with baked beans and ketchup

pigsDOfly · 17/06/2021 19:50

I loathe tomato ketchup and would never eat it, with or without gravy, but I would never stop someone else eating it.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you should stop someone else having it.

You're going to have a great many battles if you're going to apply this to other things as your children grow up.

I can tell you now, you're probably not going to like their music or their clothes either. Are you going to censor those as well?

Wildest · 17/06/2021 19:52

Is that really a battle you with your children? If they eat their dinner and enjoy it then what's the issue? It's not like you're sharing their plate!

Elieza · 17/06/2021 19:52

You are being very overbearing and unreasonable.

If they wanted beetroot or salad cream or brown sauce I’d have handed it over and been glad they were eating and enjoying their dinner. Even if those condiments would not have been my choice!

Better than them picking at it, wasting food and then eating their own body weight in crisps and shite because they are hungry later ….

Looubylou · 17/06/2021 19:52

You've took me back nearly 40 years, when I took my school packed lunch to my friends house. Her lunch was meat left from the Sunday roast, mash, gravy, and on went the tomato sauce. I couldn't believe my eyes! I was equally amazed when I started work and saw people having chips and gravy in the canteen. Though I admit, that one has grown on me now 😜

lazylinguist · 17/06/2021 19:52

I like it! Only with sausages though. Besides, if you have other condiments like mint sauce, apple sauce, redcurrant jelly etc with meat and gravy, why not tomato sauce? It seems like a weirdly strong reaction on your part tbh. Why would you forbid your dc from eating sometjust because you don't like it? Confused

AnUnoriginalUsername · 17/06/2021 19:53

I think mustard is gross but I don't stop my husband eating it. It didn't affect you at all to let them have it.

purplecorkheart · 17/06/2021 19:56

I think tomato ketchup is the work of the devil. It smells vile. However I don't think I would take it off kids because I thought gravy and ketchup is a vile combo.

Electricmouse · 17/06/2021 19:58

I put ketchup on mashed potato even if it comes with a roast dinner.
Why not? Not hurting anybody else is it?

Electricmouse · 17/06/2021 20:00

And as others have said, unless you're being Health conscious and it's about salt content(even then a drop of sauce isn't going to make a huge difference) why create a bottle over something just because you don't like it?

LawnFever · 17/06/2021 20:02

You’re being ridiculous, poor kids let them just eat their dinner, I’m sure there’s foods you like that other people don’t, how would you feel if someone took your meal away?

SilverGoblin · 17/06/2021 20:07

That makes me feel sick to even imagine it.

Then again disgusting sugary and/or vinegary smelling bottled sauces make me heave in general.

cupsofcoffee · 17/06/2021 20:09

Why would you stop someone eating something just because you don't like it? Very odd.

It's a great combination by the way - you're missing out Grin
