Gravy AND Tomato sauce on dinner?

Chwaraeteg · 17/06/2021 19:35

Am I alone in thinking this is fucking disgusting and not allowing my children to eat this? My partner seems to think so.

For background, the meal was sausage, mash, peas and gravy. The kids are 7 and 3. and the toddler had a momentary meltdown when I confiscated the sauce. So, was I bu?

I mean this with all love and light heartedness, but you're being crazycakes Grin

Poor child. Just wanted to eat their dinner how they like it. Incredibly controlling and mean. We all eat and like different things. I hate making my child cry and feel bad when I have to do it for good reasons that teach them life lessons or keep them safe. I'd never make them cry over something so harmless as that. I'd feel awful making them cry for this reason

Chwaraeteg · 17/06/2021 20:14

Hmmm, see, logically I suspected I might be on shaky ground. But emotionally I'm still like, 'nope. Ketchup and gravy is just WRONG. Savagely wrong. I can't let it happen!!!'.

And I have absolutely no idea why I'm having such a strong emotional reaction to this combination of foods Confused

You can allow it to make you cringe and you can keep it off your plate but let the child eat and enjoy their food and stop being so incredibly overbearing

slashlover · 17/06/2021 20:23

Would you find it acceptable if you DP said that he didn't like something you ate and essentially banned you from having it?

Chwaraeteg · 17/06/2021 20:38

But I have to deal with the washing up afterwards @1940's and I find just the idea of mixing gravy and ketchup makes me actually gag. I think at this point, reading the replies, it's clear that I'm being unreasonable and irrational but I think I'm gonna have to leave the rule in place anyway, so I don't actually vomit.

I can't give an unbiased answer to this because I really dislike gravy. I don't think the combination sounds very nice, even for someone who liked gravy. But I think I would allow other people, especially children, to eat it if it would make them enjoy more of their dinner. My DS1 was a bit fussy as a kid but would eat almost anything if he could have garlic mayonnaise on it. I sometimes thought his combinations were a bit weird, but better that he ate enough and enjoyed it!

HoldingTheDoor · 17/06/2021 20:41

YABU. Let the poor kids enjoy their dinner. You don't have to eat it.

YABU for referring to a three year old as a toddler.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 17/06/2021 20:41

@Grastenia

YANBU that is fucking disgusting, bit then I have a bit of a phobia of ketchup. I know that sounds ridiculous but I honestly gag at the smell, and the thought of it touching me gives me the boak.

Well obviously you are deselected from this 'jury service' @Iminaglasscaseofemotion Not impartial are thee Grin

😂 yup
1940s · 17/06/2021 20:43

Gravy and ketchup rinsed down the sink makes you gag so much you fear you'll vomit? I find that incredibly far fetched. And your partner can't rinse that one plate? You're being selfish. You've made your child have a 'momentary meltdown' because you're the one acting like a child

topwings · 17/06/2021 20:45

You are being hugely unreasonable - gravy and ketchup are a perfect combination!

Chwaraeteg · 17/06/2021 20:49

@HoldingTheDoor - am I really being unreasonable to still call the 3 year old a toddler? I honestly thought toddlerhood lasted until kids were about 4ish. I'm only just coming to terms with not being able to call her 'the baby' anymore 😢

OP posts:
HoldingTheDoor · 17/06/2021 20:51

Yes. YABU. Once they turn three, they are no longer a toddler.

That said, I won't tell anyone if you keep calling her that.

DazedandConcerned · 17/06/2021 20:52

Canadian here.

Ketchup on fries and gravy is a staple in the area of Canada I’m from. Quite nice. Off to the chippy and to get my Heinz out of the fridge…

pinkoctopuss · 17/06/2021 21:00

I love gravy and ketchup together BlushConfusedGrin

CorianderBee · 17/06/2021 21:16

Doesn't everyone have ketchup on the side of bangers and mash for your sausages to be dipped in?

Perfectly normal OP.

PlanetTeaTime · 17/06/2021 21:21

@SticksAndStoned

I like tomato ketchup with cottage pie, which comes with its own gravy.

YABU.

Same!!
Liamandlee · 17/06/2021 21:26

It's lovely together and with vinegar on

Potnoodleforbrains · 17/06/2021 21:39

A full roast dinner with gravy is not complete without ketchup so yes yabu.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 17/06/2021 21:41

Let them have ketchup on it if they want. My DGM used to stir it into the gravy. 😋

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 17/06/2021 21:48

My best friend has mayonnaise on her roast potatoes. I struggle. But I don’t forbid it!

Chwaraeteg · 17/06/2021 21:55

Ugh, oh god, I am going to have to concede on this one aren't I? This thread did not go as I had hoped!

OP posts:
theheartofthematter · 17/06/2021 21:58

YABU I love sausages with salad cream and gravy. Just because you don't like it why should someone else not enjoy it?

Okbye · 17/06/2021 22:01

It’s gross, and definitely not a combo I would choose.
However if it meant my child eating dinner without a fight/argument then I’d let them have the sauce (much to my dismay!)

lazylinguist · 17/06/2021 22:07

The number of MNers who apparently gag and retch at the mere thought of various totally innocuous things never ceases to astonish me!
