Gravy AND Tomato sauce on dinner?

Chwaraeteg · 17/06/2021 19:35

Am I alone in thinking this is fucking disgusting and not allowing my children to eat this? My partner seems to think so.

For background, the meal was sausage, mash, peas and gravy. The kids are 7 and 3. and the toddler had a momentary meltdown when I confiscated the sauce. So, was I bu?

I always have ketchup ( and Dijon mustard!) with sausages, mash ,veg and gravy 😋 !!

I would have more of a problem with the gravy to be honest.

I never understand why it is acceptable to pour loads of gravy on your dinner without having tasted it first. Hate it even more when a roast dinner arrived with it already swimming in gravy.

There is no bad gravy! Just gravy and better gravy!

I was at a wedding where a guest sitting next to me asked for tomato ketchup for her leek and potato soup!

Holothane · 17/06/2021 23:49

Brown sauce for me on things I love it.

The number MNers who apparently gag and retch at the mere thought of various totally innocuous things never ceases to astonish me!

Yes, certainly the OP's claim that she is likely to vomit whilst washing it down the sink seem a trifle extreme.

Having said that, the smell of tea with milk in it does make me feel slightly nauseous, however, I have never stopped anyone I know having it in my house and if I have to empty the dregs from the cups after they've finished I somehow manage to just get on with it without vomiting.

Some people like to be very dramatic.

I'm sure cleaning gravy and ketchup off a plate isn't any worse than clearing up a child's vomit or changing a nappy.

DinosaurDiana · 18/06/2021 15:07

Of course you have tomato sauce with it.

Soubriquet · 18/06/2021 15:08

Yabu

As long as they are eating it does it matter?

I had this when I was little kid. The idea now makes me feel a bit rank but honestly? Who cares

You’re making a deal out of nothing

Ozanj · 18/06/2021 15:11

I think you shouldn’t be punishing your kids to the point where a 3 yo is having a meltdown just because they like to eat differently to you. Keep this up and you will be making solo dinners for yourself as soon as they grow old enough to to do what they want.

PurpleMustang · 18/06/2021 15:16

I despair at my son doing this but he does on everything including roasts and rice dinners! Its an occasion when he doesn't. Started off on normal ketchup needing dinners and just progressed to everything. I do worry about the sugar/salt consumption so by the 'reduced' versions. If they are eating probably case of pick your battles and not a hill to die on.

FishyMcFishyfingersFace · 18/06/2021 15:16

Personally I hate the idea of having tomato sauce and gravy on the same meal, but some of my children like it. I have reconciled myself with the fact that they like different things to me and I can't dictate what they do or don't like according to my tastes. Their tastebuds are different to mine, which are different to my husbands, which are different to yours, which are different to the queens... With something like that I'd just leave the individual to choose what they like.

Ericaequites · 18/06/2021 15:30

In Rhode Island, we refer to plain marinara sauce as gravy. It’s used on parm and pasta.

BumCat · 18/06/2021 15:32

It’s not the hill I would choose to die on. As long as they actually ate the dinner and didn’t throw it on the sodding floor a la my 2 year old.

Cocomarine · 18/06/2021 15:35

Ridiculous.
You’re clearly not anti-ketchup or anti-gravy to have both available.
You reasoning doesn’t appear to be based in nutritional concerns (and anyway if it was, just have a little less of each).
They’re only kids, but why shouldn’t they have their own preference? I think it was mean to just ride rough-shod over that.

Yes to the Dijon! Or coarse grain 😋
ApolloandDaphne · 18/06/2021 16:19

I love ketchup with steak pie and with baked beans! I also likening with anything that comes with mash. It would be awesome on sausage, mash, gravy and peas! YABVVU to not allow your DC to enjoy this deliciousness.

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/06/2021 16:21

I'm with your partner. Unreasonable and ridiculous. Don't have ketchup in the house if they're banned from eating it.

Lingfield01 · 19/06/2021 15:58

YABU. I have two grown up sons. I promise you in years to come you’ll realise how insignificant this is.

Laiste · 19/06/2021 17:07

I know i'm in a minority but - sausages and gravy - yuk!

Why is gravy on a fried food any better than ketchup with gravy?

Hidingunderablanket · 19/06/2021 17:09

I wouldn’t eat it together, but tbh if my kids were eating anything I’d made without a fuss I’d let them crack on. It’s not like it’s poison. If it turns out to be grim then they’ll learn for next time.
