To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

And they all have a good nose in! I think they’re homes must be a bit messy Grin.

Moonshine11 · 16/06/2021 19:16

I keep front bedroom blinds closed all day, prefer cold bedrooms to sleep in. Back of house I open and then open blinds in living room enough to let light in but to stop people seeing in.

Figgyboa · 16/06/2021 19:24

I live in a warm climate so we keep the blinds closed during summer to help keep the heat out. Nothing to hide, house isn't dark or dingy

MaBroon21 · 16/06/2021 19:25

Why would you care if someone has their curtains open or closed?

I think because there’s a misconception that curtain shut during the day equals slovenly neighbours. That to live next door to those who don’t open their curtain badly reflects on you/your house price etc.

Where I live I shut all of my curtains in May except for the back ones looking out on to the garden as i like the view and I don’t open them again till September.

I think the op would find them acceptable though as the curtains are lined and hang very nicely.

Tangledtresses · 16/06/2021 19:26

Quite normal in hot countries to keep shutters and windows closed 😂

newnortherner111 · 16/06/2021 19:27

YABU to assume illness. In the summer it could be to keep the house at a reasonable temperature. It could be after a history of someone spying on them from outside. Or it could be someone who struggles with bright light without glasses on (medical condition not being pretentious) and does not want to be wearing them indoors.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 16/06/2021 19:29

The curtains at the front of our house are closed on sunny days. If we don't the bedrooms heat up to unbearable levels as they have over the past few weeks!

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 16/06/2021 19:29

I’m actually stunned that people care. I fall asleep on the sofa in the afternoon if I’ve worked late and I pull the curtains so the neighbours don’t gawp.

I’m not shagging. Or ill. Or hiding anything. I’m sleeping.

Rebelwithverysharpclaws · 16/06/2021 19:30

Judgey much.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 16/06/2021 19:30

Mine have been closed pretty much for the last month or so. Road works been done and the digger has been smack bang outside my living room window. I don't want work men watching me eat my dinner. They've stayed closed the last few days because of how hot its been so I can try and keep the living room and bedroom cool for DCat although he's still covering himself completely inside his fleecy blanket

onanislandfaraway · 16/06/2021 19:30

I have to work a mixture of day and nightshifts. I don't bother with opening up all the curtains when I get home I just head straight to bed some mornings and if my DP and children aren't there the curtains stay shut until late, sometimes they don't get opened if it's dark early.

Sometimes I'm in a rush to leave for work, especially the days I finish work at 9.30pm on a late shift then have to be back in 6.30am on an early shift, curtains are the last thing I think about when I'm rushing out the door.

Sometimes I go straight into the kitchen/garden when I get up and don't venture back into the bedrooms or into the front rooms (which are on different floors) for hours so the curtains/blind stay shut.

Sometimes people may just want to shut the world out, doesn't make them weird IMO. I think YABUR

goldpineapple · 16/06/2021 19:32

I've kept mine shut all week because it's shuts the sun out making the room cooler, tbh I'm scared my neighbours will be traumatised watching me melt in this hot sun so it's better all round the curtains are shut.
So basically I'm hiding myself fanning myself crazy wfh in ma pants.

AbstractHeart · 16/06/2021 19:32

We never open our bedroom curtains because what would be the point when we only go in that room at night time?

RickiTarr · 16/06/2021 19:34

I had a really reactive foster dog once and had to keep the blinds almost totally shut so he couldn’t see passers by.

My friend’s sister has lupus and is so reactive to sunlight that some days she has to draw the curtains at odd hours.

I always think judgmental people lack life experience or imagination.

MrsUnderkracker · 16/06/2021 19:35

I keep mine closed downstairs because the nasty bitch next door pisses me off keeping nosing in my house.

Seriously. She is a nasty piece of work.

That as well as it's baking hot at the moment so trying to keep the house cool.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 16/06/2021 19:37

I don't open my curtains as it keeps the sun out during the day.

And it stops nosy buggers looking in during the evening if I'm staying at my boyfriends.

Keep your beak out!

Londontown12 · 16/06/2021 19:37

I keep my bedroom blinds shut on lovely sunny days it keeps the room nice and cool !
My daughter shuts the blinds in living room she hates people looking in the window 😂

SilverGoblin · 16/06/2021 19:38

When we were kids the bedroom curtains were kept shut, mainly because a family friend was "seeing" a woman who lived in the house that backed on to the bottom of our small garden and she very much liked to keep here open...all the time. This was adjacent roads on a steep hill where we were the higher.

Nothing quite like your older brother's friend coming round for a chat and a drink, only to be seen later on in the evening by the younger family members "romancing" his girlfriend in her bedroom.

Mochatatts · 16/06/2021 19:39

My OH never opened curtains due to being lazy. I now open them all and the windows. He'd rather keep the curtains closed and have the while house lit up like Blackpool Illuminations. But he works 5 days long hours so I do as I please most of the week and try not to get wound up by his habits the two days he's home. So yeah lazy blokes, especially when single 👍

Galwaygirl · 16/06/2021 19:39

Sil never opens her curtains and her house is upside down so she is hiding a mess!

User57327259 · 16/06/2021 19:41

Maybe they have nosey neighbours and are fed up with the carry on

Intercity225 · 16/06/2021 19:41

Our house faces South. If we didn’t have the lounge curtains closed, we’d never be able to see the TV on sunny days! Plus, the furniture, carpets, etc fade tremendously, so we close the curtains when we go out. As others say, it keeps the rooms cool in the summer!

ThursdayWeld · 16/06/2021 19:41

DH would never open the curtains if I didn't. It just doesn't bother him.

OhLordyWhatNow · 16/06/2021 19:42

I've had someone Facebook message me (don't have my number, but know my name) and tell me they've just walked past my house and saw I was watching TV and ask about it. The curtains on that window now stay firmly closed.

SpeakingFranglais · 16/06/2021 19:43

I don’t get closed curtains but I don’t think they are necessarily dodgy. DMs neighbours are scruffy bastards, never cut the hedges or grass, like living next door to a jungle, they also never open their curtains but they are decent nice people. Just scruffy bastards with low standards.
