To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

I keep the blinds closed at the front of the house in the summer because of the angle and direction of the sun, doing it to try and keep the house cool and it does work!

@Brunilde

We sometimes keep our front curtains closed as the sun is on that side all day and the rooms get too hot. So the nicer the day the more likely this is to happen.

I think it's different if it's a really hot sunny day as clearly, houses are not built for it. But if a house near me had curtains closed every day week in, week out then I would assume there was an issue or they didn't really keep a tidy house. Venetian blinds are a better solution for privacy than keeping curtains shut all the time.

I live virtually on the pavement, if I open the blinds then kids bang on the window or throw stones etc or just generally be a pain in the arse

We have blinds in our house, not curtains. The only room that has a window that faces the street is my husband's home office. He wouldn't want people looking in on him at work so he leaves the blinds closed, but it's plenty light in there anyway during the day. We never bother opening the blinds in our bedrooms - what's the point? We don't really spend time in there during the day. And we leave the blinds in the living areas of our house open pretty much all the time because nobody can see in.

We keep our curtains closed because nosey buggers look in as they walk past. My dog barks at anything walking by and it keeps the house cool.

I keep my curtains shut during summer to keep my pets cool and to keep the heat out ready for bedtime. Our sitting room is south facing and like a furnace if the curtains are open. I do have most windows open on the locked setting for fresh air all year round. Our garden is popular with wildlife and the dogs go ballistic if they see 'intruders' so another good reason to keep the curtains closed!

The front of our house traps an insane amount of sun. It's very unpleasant, so our curtains stay closed often.

Bedroom curtains stay closed in summer to keep it cool, and the windows are open for fresh air.

Living room curtains are open, because the house isn't overlooked and I'm a nosy fucker who likes to see what's going on in my road.

I leave bedroom blinds closed at the front at summer as it is east facing so in the morning it roasts the house up to have them open.

In the evening once it goes dusk we close the living room blinds as they are at the front of the house and you feel on show to the outside, so for privacy really

I always thought it was weird too, but reading the thread I think I understand it now. I really struggle without natural light coming in. I don't have mental health issues but having the curtains shut in the daytime makes me feel fed up and quite sad. Even if DH has closed them because he says there's too much light reflected on the TV, I have to fight not to leave the room.

I’d keep my curtains closed if I couldn't have a pizza delivered without a neighbour noting it.

I've kept them closed today to stop the house getting too hot

Curtains and blinds always down during the day in summer. I don’t want my carpet and furniture bleached by the sun plus it keeps the house lovely and cool. Windows remain open when we are in. By the time early evening comes the blinds and curtains get opened to allow air to circulate. Not hiding anything — apart from the mess my 4 yr old makes in the living room which I don’t have the energy to tidy away 😂

Night workers who sleep during the day?

I’d keep them closed to prevent said neighbour seeing me scarf it down. I had a pizza last night. It was gone in an instant. My table manners have taken a nose dive in lockdown - think I may be reintroduction training.

Curtains shut = cool house in my case. Most of my upstairs curtains are shut 24/7 this time of year.

As much as I try adore a hot day…. Keeping my bedroom curtains closed really stops my room becoming a furnace.

And in all honesty I couldn’t give a s if people have them open or closed!

I keep bedroom curtains closed as the light is too bright at that side and it's cosier with them closed.
