To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

Our curtains are closed at the moment-keeps the house cooler.

Iquitit · 16/06/2021 18:04

Obviously I should be keeping my curtains open instead of ensuring the place is as dark and cool as possible to enable me to sleep properly during the day, so I'm you know awake for my nights.
Just in case I'm dubbed a weirdo or dodgy.
My grass is currently at around 1.5cms - is this within the realms of dodgy and weird too?

Inmypjsagain · 16/06/2021 18:04

Our blinds are down atm in our flat because it’s so warm! We’re trying to keep the sun out.

When I lived at my parent’s house the drawing room and front bedroom windows/curtains were rarely open, as they’re not rooms that were used very often and it maintained privacy. Most of our living was done at the back and middle rooms of of the house, with doors, windows etc open. Maybe that’s the case with these houses!

KindnessMyFriends · 16/06/2021 18:04

@grapewine

Want for privacy is not dodgy
Wanting to keep the sun out is not dodgy. Being too busy to open curtains and mow lawn is not dodgy. Being nosy and judgemental is a bit dodgy though 😂
TheGoogleMum · 16/06/2021 18:07

We dont bother to open the curtains before going out for the day. Why would we?
We wait till everyone us up and dressed to open at weekends which might not be very early

PerciphonePuma · 16/06/2021 18:08

@looptheloopinahulahoop

Sometimes I just forget to open them!
How can you forget to open your curtains?! Daylight!
ThePlantsitter · 16/06/2021 18:09

Keeping the house cool. Also keep yer beak out

KaleJuicer · 16/06/2021 18:09

The internal temperature in our house at the moment is over 30 degrees C. It would be closer to 40 if I'd thrown the curtains open on this lovely sunny day! Keeping the curtains shut avoids solar gain to use the technical term.

corahallett · 16/06/2021 18:09

Front of ours must look like a crack den (we have a nice tidy non-crack den garden though) - we are only a few feet back from the pavement and I hate people being able to see in, plus the sun is FIERCE on the front of the house in hot weather so the blinds are almost permanently shut. I usually open the windows later in the evening for fresh air but daytimes they are shut most of the time. Round the back every window is open as it's cooler / gets more of a breeze. You wouldn't know that if you walked past though.

I find it more weird when people like my neighbours have all the curtains open all the time and are sat there watching TV where everyone who walks past can see them.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 16/06/2021 18:09

I think people who start threads like this might be a bit ill but they're definitely creepy.

grapewine · 16/06/2021 18:10

I find it almost a bit creepy.

People who live differently to you are 'almost creepy'?

FFS. Just mind your own business.

Bluntness100 · 16/06/2021 18:10

Um not sure why everyone is going on about the sun, the op said the neighbours never open them, which also then includes autumn, spring and winter.

I had a house on a busy street once and I used voile curtains, basically like plain net. Let the light in but prevented the weird nosey folks staring in, curtains got shut in the evening.

I get what the op is saying, all curtains closed all year round is unusual.

Onceuponatime1818 · 16/06/2021 18:10

I agree! And also find it weird no one seems to air their houses, I wake up, open all curtains and about 8 windows in the house leaving them open the whole day. Did this even pre covid

Marmite27 · 16/06/2021 18:10

Out curtains are closed at the moment as they’re black out and keep out the heat.

Our front garden is full of weeds and the paintwork needs redoing, but we’ve got other things on our minds like supporting FIL through a terminal cancer diagnosis. HTH.

Sticklebricks444 · 16/06/2021 18:11

Bedroom curtains pretty much stay closed all the time due to a night shift worker living in the house and a child who naps during the day. But our garden is also over grown at the front as not had time due to shift worker working front line during the pandemic and a baby who doesn't sleep... don't judge everything

adrianmolesmole · 16/06/2021 18:11

Don't be stupid. Not everyone loves the sun.

I have my curtains closed because I'm working in my bedroom everyday and it's a south facing window and my room is boiling hot. I also have an air conditioner with a pipe out the window so I keep the windows closed to help cool down the room. The big window still has to be open because of the pipe so I keep the curtains closed to help.

You seem to have too much time on your hands.

RaspberryCoulis · 16/06/2021 18:12

My MIL HATED opening the curtains. On every window she had nets, pull down blinds and curtains. She hated the idea anyone might see her inside. She didn’t really open windows really. The air quality inside was horrible.

My MIL is like this. She has those criss cross "leaded" windows" and heavy vertical blinds hanging in front of them which are always shut. Drapey, heavy curtains not fully closed but blocking out loads of the light. Even on a bright day you have to put the light on to see. They have parking spaces for their car between the house and the street, which is a very quiet cul de sac anyway. MIL does live in absolute horror of the idea that someone might look in. Hmm All they'd see is her and FIL watching Countdown.

She locks all the windows too so you can't open them even on the hottest nights. You first have to request a key, then wait while MIL and FIL go through the "you had it last, no YOU had it last" pantomime.

We have explained several times that having windows locked without keys to hand is dangerous in case of a fire or something. But no, they know best.

grapewine · 16/06/2021 18:12

Wanting to keep the sun out is not dodgy. Being too busy to open curtains and mow lawn is not dodgy. Being nosy and judgemental is a bit dodgy though 😂

Indeed.

ThePlantsitter · 16/06/2021 18:12

On my grandma's Street the neighbours used to check you weren't dead if you didn't open your curtains after about 9.

riotlady · 16/06/2021 18:12

We live in a ground floor flat and our bedroom is at the front so I hardly ever open the blinds in there, just feels really weird and intrusive to have people wandering past outside my bedroom. All the blinds at the back are open so it’s not like the whole house is dark

MeepyMupp · 16/06/2021 18:12

I keep my front room curtains closed in the morning till about 12/1pm when its sunny as the sun shines straight in our house so you can't sit in their with out the sun being constantly in your eyes or watch TV as the screen in obstructed by sunlight, it's quite bad like when you are driving and the sun is directlyin your eyes . I keep the closed on very hot days to later in afternoon to also keep house cool as it just gets too hot, I do open them afterwards though. I keep bedroom curtains shut all day on hot days to keep bedrooms cool.

Fangsalot89 · 16/06/2021 18:12

Just an idea but they might have their curtains shut to avoid nosey judgmental neighbours.

Cottoncandyandpeaches · 16/06/2021 18:13

We have blinds and curtains
We keep the blinds shut to keep out the nosey cow next door/people gawping as they walk past
We often shut the curtains as we can’t see the tv with the sun shining in even with shut blinds
If our bedroom curtains are closed it’s because it’s too hot in there
We can’t open the front windows as there is nothing to open-just two very tiny windows-the rest of the house has theirs open but from the front it must look like we keep them shut all the time
Our garden is immaculate tho

Brunilde · 16/06/2021 18:13

We sometimes keep our front curtains closed as the sun is on that side all day and the rooms get too hot. So the nicer the day the more likely this is to happen.

MeepyMupp · 16/06/2021 18:13

Sorry for typos.
