To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

Having thought about this deeply, I believe it's you they're avoiding OP.

Barmychick · 18/06/2021 10:38

All the above sensible reasons! As a child when family/neighbour died you were not considered respectful if curtains weren't closed.

jillybeanclevertips · 18/06/2021 10:44

I had a friend who kept the curtains closed 24/7 to stop the funiture from fading. (O.K. she was a bit odd) Also keeping the house cooler may help, plus you don't want anybody witnessing a murder. Its hard enough to get rid of the body withoput having eye witnesses. !!!!

Covidconfuse · 18/06/2021 10:55

I often don’t get around to opening the bedroom blinds. I jump out of bed to attend to the baby, jump in the shower, get changed with the blinds closed so I don’t give passers by and the postman a fright, then if there is time have a quick glass of juice before jogging the baby down the road to nursery. I then eat breakfast at my home office desk and then by the end of the working day the priority is getting the little one back and fed, dinner for everyone, TV and bed! Straight back into the bedroom with blinds conveniently still closed for immediately collapse into bed!

LindaEllen · 18/06/2021 11:18

YABU for judging people for how they live when it doesn't impact you in the slightest.

Our front window blinds are shut (curtains are open) because we don't want people staring in on their way past, and you've proven that we're right to do so!

Our drive was an absolute mess up until a couple of weeks ago because we've just had other things to prioritise. But we haven't been ill, nor hiding something.

Stormyequine · 18/06/2021 11:21

You'd hate my house. The front of it is mostly occupied by teenaged DS who I swear is a vampire, so curtains are usually shut unless he is out and I open them. You needn't feel sad though. DH and I hang out at the back of the house, which is lovely and sunny and light with a nice view of the garden.

Redact · 18/06/2021 11:33

Opening my blinds and curtains is the first thing I do every morning, I love letting the light in. I only close bedroom blinds and curtains and the office blinds when we go to bed.

dopeyduck · 18/06/2021 12:04

Probably because they don't want their neighbours watching their every move ... like what food they get delivered or where the car is / what the car is.
Does it matter? Is it hurting you?

CousinKrispy · 18/06/2021 12:23

Keeping curtains closed on a sunny day significantly reduces the indoor temperature.

user1471538283 · 18/06/2021 12:33

As long as neighbours are quiet I do not care what they do or don't do!

We close our blinds or keep them closed in the bedrooms when it is really hot to keep the cool in and open the windows. Otherwise I always open them and windows (even for just a short time). One of my favorite memories of my childhood was having the lounge curtains closed so the room was really dark and cool!

OMGafourth · 18/06/2021 16:33

Are you my neighbour? My house is a dive, triffids in the garden... and my husband works nights, so curtains remain firmly closed.

peppermintpat · 18/06/2021 17:19

Sticking up for the OP I would think it odd too. I open all curtains and blinds and windows slightly if a nice day. The curtains will get drawn as the sun comes round and opened again when it's gone.
I could not stand living in the dark all the time and having two dogs I am conscious of letting some air in.

KarensGobbyChops · 18/06/2021 17:25

triffids in the garden Grin

Bella43 · 18/06/2021 18:57

I used to wonder this. I don't anymore. My blinds have to be tilted all day. It looks like they're fully closed but they're not. I have to keep them that way because the dog barks constantly at people walking past. I live on a busy street and hate not being able to see out. Honestly though, when I open them the dog goes wild and jumps at the windowsill going wild. It's awful. Especially when people stop and have a chat outside my house 🙈 I feel like going out there and saying, please, you can hear my dog barking at the window. Please move on. She barks whether the blinds are tilted or not when people talk out there 🙉

MaryBoBary · 18/06/2021 19:00

We had neighbours who kept their curtains closed all day because they were naturists/nudists and didn't wear clothes at home.

Maggiesfarm · 18/06/2021 20:59

I thought the point of being naturists was to let fresh air and sunlight onto your body. Oh what do I know.

pollymere · 18/06/2021 22:37

We keep the front closed to keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter. Also for privacy. We have all the back ones open though!

BBOA · 18/06/2021 22:57

Ditto to keep the house cool on a hot day, but upstairs only.

Dreambigger · 18/06/2021 23:02

OP i completely agree with you. Is it not very dark inside ? Our neighbours do this and I find it strange.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 18/06/2021 23:07

Maybe I’m a bit odd because I absolutely hate dark rooms and hallways etc. There is no way I could live in a house with the curtains closed during the day. Apart from anything else, think of the electricity bills!

Blancmangetout · 19/06/2021 00:24

Why are some people assuming closed blinds/curtains = pitch black room?
It really doesn't. As a closed curtains person I can reassure all who are concerned that we have plenty of daylight and fresh air and are not hiding anything.
Feel free to take your concerns elsewhere now.
Thanks.

Myrighteyeball · 19/06/2021 03:56

So it's creepy for people to keep their curtains closed - even though they clearly have a nosy parker in their vicinity?

I keep one set of curtains closed permanently so my neighbours can't see in - because they I know they look and it makes me feel uncomfortable.

OP if lots of your neighbours do the same maybe they are avoiding your nosiness?

Myrighteyeball · 19/06/2021 03:59

And it's not dark in the room because - shock - there is another window on another wall in the room and I open it as it doesn't look into nosy neighbours.

KarensGobbyChops · 19/06/2021 05:01

@Myrighteyeball

And it's not dark in the room because - shock - there is another window on another wall in the room and I open it as it doesn't look into nosy neighbours.
Exactly this. Most of the sun tends to hit my back garden, all lovely open windows anyway plus patio doors often open at the back. Especially in this weather. Win-win.
FierceBarrie · 19/06/2021 05:10

Another one who agrees with the OP and always opens all curtains and blinds first thing in the morning.

I need light and air. As much of the former as possible.

Closed curtains feel depressing to me.
